UNSW ‘Do The Maths’ – Empowering Women, Inspiring Futures
On Wednesday 25 June, Year 11 HSC Mathematics Extension 1 students headed to the University of New South Wales for the flagship annual event designed for female secondary students with demonstrative capacity, talent and interest in Mathematics. It was the 20th anniversary of the event and the day consisted of a talk from the 2025 UNSW Women in Mathematics and Statistics Ambassador Dr Asilata Bapat, an interactive workshop activity followed by a Q&A panel of current UNSW students and alumni with careers in Mathematics.
The talks were inspiring and showed how Mathematics can be used in various careers and everyday life. The highlight of the day would have to be the Counting Conundrums activity where students worked through various problems, only to find that they were all connected. When the lightbulb moment hit, students were cheering with awe and genuine excitement. It was a nice change of scenery from the usual mathematics done in the classroom and hopefully a day that will inspire some students to continue with mathematics in their future.
