Year 10 PASS Learning about Body Systems

Year 10 PASS Learning about Body Systems

Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) students have been delving into the fascinating world of body systems this term. Their comprehensive unit has covered the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems, providing students with a solid foundation in understanding how these systems work together to produce efficient movement.

The unit has been a blend of theoretical and practical learning. In the classroom, students have explored how each body system functions and its role during exercise. Practical sessions, such as strength training in the cardio room, have allowed students to observe firsthand how their heart rate changes during physical activity and how different systems interact to support performance.

This unit has also introduced students to topics that will be further explored in Year 11 Human Movement Science and Sport Science courses. Students have examined the role of food as a fuel source for various physical activities, the impact of anaerobic and aerobic energy production on performance, and the importance of hydration during sports. Through case studies of different athletes, they have investigated the effects of dehydration and critically analysed claims made by beverage companies marketing hydration products.

Furthermore, Year 10 PASS students had the unique opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom through attending an excursion to ACU BEST Hub. Here they participated in hands on sessions that brought their theoretical knowledge to life. During these practical experiences, students were able to apply what they learnt about nutrition and energy systems by participating in anaerobic power and submaximal VO2 max tests. These exercises not only reinforced their understanding of how different body systems contribute to exercise performance but also provided them with insights into scientific testing methods used in sports science.

By engaging with these topics, Year 10 PASS students are not only gaining valuable knowledge but also developing a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the human body and its capabilities. We look forward to seeing how they apply this understanding in their future studies and athletic endeavours.
