From the Head of Senior School
You may have heard your daughter speak at home about Heart Points and Accountability Points. These have been introduced in 2023 to promote positive behaviour and to enhance the supportive and safe learning environment that we have here at MLC School.
The Heart Points reflect the positive behaviour that we see around the school that reflect our School values of Courage, Compassion, Respect and Growth. Teachers award the points regularly around the school and these are directly converted into house points which are then recognised within our house meetings and assemblies with awards. If a student receives three House points, she receives a bronze certificate and works her way toward gold, which will be celebrated in a whole School assembly. I often wish we could have the booming voice of Dumbledore in the hallways declaring “10 points for Abbeythorpe!” at any given moment to celebrate the wonderful things that our students do on a day to day basis.
We also have Accountability Points, which are allocated to our students to remind them to be independent and responsible for their learning. These points are allocated to reflect a diversion from School rules and may be allocated for infringements such lateness, incorrect uniform, jewellery and inappropriate behaviour. If a student receives three Accountability Points, she will receive a lunchtime detention, and for a further three Accountability Points, she will receive an after school detention. The monitoring of these allow us to pick up on any issues with students early in order to provide support that the student needs to stay on track. We take a restorative approach to our behaviour management and we are always looking to improvement and growth.
I was so happy to see a flurry of Heart Points come through last week after the HSC and IB Art and Design Showcase as a number of lovely friends went above and beyond to help their friends in the last hours of their major works, showing so much compassion!
I have recorded a video below about this new system and a few more changes in the Senior School, I hope you enjoy it.
