First Place in Video Matsuri – Japanese Student Short Film Contest
Learning a language is not easy – it cannot be achieved overnight. Film production is a difficult task in itself and it is even more difficult when done in a foreign language.
On the behalf of the Japanese Culture Club, congratulations to all the girls who participated in Video Matsuri – Japanese Student Short Film Contest 2020 organised by Japan Foundation.
The Japanese Culture Club entered five short videos, two of which were created by Year 11 students and three by Year 8 students. The key item to be presented in the film was ‘water bottle’, すいとう.
Our Year 11 students, who have only been learning Japanese for less than a year, competed against students who have been studying the language for more than 4 years and were awarded first place of the Senior Secondary Division for their film ‘Plastic Bottles’. The judges’ commented, ‘The winning video had many levels: it contained the metaphorical wisdom of how we cause consequences by our own actions, it had a well-organised story line with a mysterious thriller twist and it was highly regarded because of its subtle message on environmental conservation to reduce plastics.’
