Girls’ Schools are Best for Girls

New report confirms that girls’ schools are best for girls

Many of you will be familiar with reports of Australian students’ decline against other countries as measured by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OCED) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) tests.

“PISA assesses the reading, mathematical and scientific literacy of 15-year-old students around the globe. Conducted every three years since 2000, it enables countries to measure and compare how well prepared students nearing the end of compulsory schooling are to use their knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges.

More than 600 000 students in 79 countries and economies took part in PISA 2018, including a nationally representative sample of 14 273 Australian students in 740 schools”. (ACER)

After years of decline across various disciplines, in the 2018 assessment, Australian students failed to exceed the OECD average in maths, while also falling in reading and science.

However, a new report analysing Australian and New Zealand PISA data from 2015 and 2018, shows that unlike their peers in other schools, students from girls’ schools excelled on PISA’s three measures of academic performance in science, mathematics and reading.

Compared to co-educated girls from the top 25% of socioeconomic backgrounds, single-sex girls from the top 25% of socioeconomic backgrounds:

  • Scored up to 10 percentage points higher on academic tests of science, mathematics and reading
  • Scored 10 percentage points higher on measures of scientific enquiry, interpreting scientific evidence, procedural and epistemic science knowledge, physical science and life science
  • Scored up to 7 percentage points higher on literacy measures of reading evaluation and reflection, locating information, and understanding information

And the advantages are not limited to academic achievement. According to the report, girls’ schools not only produce strong academic results, including in vital STEM fields, but they also create learning environments and experiences that shape girls’ self-concept and self-confidence, helping them to make lifelong friends, forge strong support networks, challenge gender stereotypes, and believe in themselves and their future plans.

Students from girls’ schools also reported higher academic aspirations, more adaptive and flexible teachers, stronger feelings of school belonging, and a significantly lower prevalence of bullying.

Given MLC School’s long-standing commitment to the education and empowerment of young women, this data comes as no real surprise and confirms what we know to be the case. It bears out our genuine experience and our long-held belief that girls are best educated in an environment where they are free from gender stereotypes, where learning can be tailored to their needs, where they see female leaders as the norm and consequently grow up believing that if they work hard, they can choose any pathway that they wish.

The statement of the advantages of attending a girls’ school closely mirrors the value of attending MLC School: our girls are indeed fortunate to have flexible and adaptive teachers; and they have an incredible range of opportunities to extend themselves beyond the classroom, free from any considerations of their gender so they can build confidence and resilience. In a year like no other, the work that our School does to ensure our girls are strong, capable and equipped to face adversity has never been more evident.

A more detailed summary of the report can be accessed here.

Congratulations to our 2020 HSC Cohort

Congratulations to our 2020 HSC Cohort

At the very outset, I must acknowledge and congratulate every one of our Year 12 girls on completing their final exams in the context of a year that is has not been experienced in virtually any living person’s lifetime and is unlikely to be seen again for generations.

Our girls were undaunted in their focus to carry on with as many things they could within the confines of the prevailing restrictions. They did this with grace and good humour, without ever bemoaning the lot that they had been handed. Having been witness to this gives me great confidence that our future is in excellent hands.

There is no doubt that these remarkable young women truly reflected the resilience, adaptability and genuine spirit to ‘dare to be more’ that our School always endeavours to build within our students.

In any year, completing the HSC is not easy, to do so this year required every girl to rise to a new level of dedication and demonstrate exceptional strength of character. I am so proud to be able to call these young women MLC School alumnae.

Notwithstanding the limitations on what activities could occur, the Year 12 girls thought creatively and flexibly so they could be involved in as many programs as possible and they shared their leadership and enthusiasm (which never seemed to wane), either face to face or virtually with their fellow students.

Around 60% of our Year 12 students sat for the Higher School Certificate and received their final results today. Many of the highlights that we report here are just one small measure of their final year, there is no way to measure the true grit these girls have shown.

As we offer both HSC and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, it is difficult to compare our results with schools which focus only on the HSC, and which are reported in the media. Our IB students’ results will be published on Sunday 3 January 2021 and we will provide you with a further update on the achievements of the Class of 2020 after that date.

I know you will join me in congratulating and celebrating the HSC Class of 2020 for their achievements this year. Individually and collectively, they have already demonstrated that they are so much more than a number on a page, and I am confident that each of these fine young women is destined to positively shape our world.

Lisa Moloney Welcomed as Trustee to Round Square Board

Lisa Moloney Welcomed as Trustee to Round Square Board

We are delighted to announce that Principal, Lisa Moloney is one of three new Trustees recently appointed to the Round Square Board of Trustees.

Lisa was selected by majority vote of the Heads of School in the Australasia and East Asia Region and assumes the role of Round Square Regional Trustee for Australasia and East Asia. The Australasia and East Asia Region includes China, Indonesia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Republic of Korea.

Each of the five Round Square Regions is represented on the Round Square Board by a Regional Trustee, who is the current Head of a Round Square Global Member School within the Region. Lisa has been appointed for an initial term of office of four years.

MLC School was one of the first Australian girls’ schools to be accepted as members of Round Square, joining in 2004 as Regional members (now called Candidate-members) and then Global members from 2006.

Lisa first became involved with Round Square whilst Deputy Principal and Head of High School at Radford College Canberra where she was instrumental in Radford’s successful application to become a Round Square school. At MLC School, the Round Square IDEALS and Discovery Framework are embedded in all aspects of School life and, through the School’s Round Square Student Committee, all girls have the opportunity to be involved.

Under Lisa’s leadership students actively participate in exchange and Round Square conferences, and the process is underway to extend the Round Square approach into the Junior School. Lisa has supported Round Square activities beyond her MLC School, having undertaken Candidacy evaluation visits and MLC School hosted the 2019 Round Square Annual Regional Meeting.

Lisa’s appointment secures MLC School’s commitment to Round Square and reflects on our significant involvement across the organisation.

Pre-Kindergarten provides the ideal environment for the girls’ transition to Junior School.

Girls attending Pre-Kindergarten are enrolled to attend three days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday OR Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) or five days.

Girls in the three-day program are highly encouraged to make the change to full-time, five days per week, by Term 4. This will greatly assist with their transition to Kindergarten the following year.

135th Annual Speech Day at the International Convention Centre

135th Annual Speech Day at the International Convention Centre

MLC School’s Annual Speech Day is one of the biggest days in the School’s calendar. It is a celebration and acknowledgement of achievement during the year, covering academic, creative and sporting categories, along with several Special Awards.

On Thursday 10 December 2020, the whole School packed up (in stages) and moved to the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour, our new venue for this year.

MLC School staff did a magnificent job, moving the students in and out of the venue and navigating a completely new set of change rooms and backstage exits and entrances with musical instruments and props.

MLC School families were also instrumental in ensuring the day ran smoothly, COVID restrictions and social distancing were notified and followed accordingly.

We are definitely looking forward to using this venue again at the end of 2021 and with the relaxing of restrictions, being able to welcome many more participants.

Farewell to Year 12

Farewell to Year 12

Congratulations to the Year 12 Class of 2020 for making it through a very difficult year and showing the whole MLC School community their incredible resilience and courage. We wish every girl all the best for their future.

Thursday 17 September 2020 marked their final day as MLC School students, as they transitioned to MLC School Old Girls. The COVID-19 restrictions didn’t stop the School from giving our girls a well-deserved celebration, all with safety measures in place. With events live-streamed and other Year groups taking part in a Guard of Honour our community was still able to take part in this year’s farewell.

Please click here to watch the final day video, it is very special.

SRC Toy Drive brings Joy to Those in Need

SRC Toy Drive brings Joy to Those in Need

Congratulations to the SRC for a successful Christmas Toy Drive and thank you to the community for donating so many wonderful toys.

The toys were delivered to Wesley Mission during the last week of School to be given to children and families in homeless shelters. We were overwhelmed to receive the following message from Wesley Mission thanking the MLC School community.

I am writing to thank you and your school community for providing gifts, hampers and hope to our community this year. I cannot tell you the excitement my staff had that they were able to personally deliver your beautiful and thoughtful gifts to people in need. Some families who received your gifts have commented with the following; Boy, 8, “I have never seen a Lego set like this before!”, Mum, “It is so nice to think that people are caring about me and my family, please tell the school they have brought life and joy to me and my family”.

Some of our families are living in refuges, unstable housing and many suffering with job loss due to COVID. These gifts and hampers go a very long way to help families feel connected and cared for. On a personal note, my staff were crying when we were allocating the gifts for the families as we know just how much of a helping hand this will be for our clients. We work alongside our families for at least a year so we intimately know just have frightening and lonely this year has been and to be able to partner with your school in delivering so many generous gifts to our community has brought us hope.

I especially wish to thank Gloria who has always been so quick, professional and warm in her responses with me and John, who has also been so generous with his time. From us to you and your community, thank you for your time and your generosity. We are so very grateful to have witnessed your school spirit.

Warmly,
Amy Clark

Magdalena Gives Back

Magdalena Gives Back

Recognising Community Service

We want to acknowledge Magdalena (Year 2), who has been involved in some important community service over the past few months, showing the school values of compassion and respect.  Robyn Monro Miller, CEO of Kids Giving Back, a charity that provides meaningful, hands-on experiences for children and young people to give back to others, has written to the School, expressing her thanks and admiration for Magdalena’s efforts. On weekends and in the school holidays, Magdalena has assisted in the preparation of meals for the homeless, packing care packs and delivering hampers for people experiencing food scarcity. Robyn praised Magdalena’s enthusiasm in undertaking these tasks and her desire to learn more about the cause she was supporting.

The team at Kids Giving Back were most impressed by the strong work ethic displayed by Magdalena who undertook such tasks as resource development, food preparation and letter writing.

“During the holidays, I volunteered at Kids Giving Back. I made some delicious, healthy meals such as fruit skewers and muesli cereal. My brother did it as well. I learnt that life is so hard for homeless people, especially during the current pandemic. They called me Miss Environmentalist because when they asked a question “if some people came and gave you a meal with meat in it and you were vegetarian what would you do?” I said “I would either pick it out or deal with it.” Then everyone cracked up laughing and then I laughed as well! I had a great time”

Magdalena

Year 6 Showcase 2020

Year 6 Showcase 2020

What a day it was! A tinge of tension, a buzz of excitement and a tonne of courage could be sensed across the Year 6 centre as the girls prepared to present their ‘Agents of Change’ projects. The Year 6 Showcase took on a very different form due to COVID-19 restrictions this year and the upside was that it allowed faraway family members to join in the learning celebrations, via our virtual platform.

Last term our Year 6 girls embarked on an individual inquiry into an issue or inequality existing in our society. Each student carefully considered how they could make a positive impact and their action took various forms. The process was documented in a website which included informative texts, photo essays, infographics, videos, artworks, drama performances and much more. This was all shared via Microsoft Teams with parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents. The girls did an outstanding job showcasing their work and the audience asked thought-provoking questions that extended the girls’ thinking further. The Year 6 teaching team would like to congratulate each and every Year 6 girl on her hard work, her desire to be an engaged citizen, and most of all, for proving that girls and women are truly ‘Agents of Change’.

Year 7 2021 Orientation Day

Year 7 2021 Orientation Day

On 20 November 2020 our Year 7 2021 cohort came together for Orientation Day.

Greeted by the House Captains at the gate, each girl was welcomed into their House and introduced to other girls they’ll share the next six years with.

The girls received a formal welcome from Lisa Moloney, Principal, and Neil Scotney, Head of Senior School, which was then followed by an introduction to all School things by Head of Year 7 Fiona Pow.

The day was full of getting to know each other, becoming familiar with the campus, House activities and sport.

We hope Orientation Day was successful in getting the girls excited to enter the Senior Years at MLC School.

Year 10 Archdale Team Wins by Unanimous Decision

Year 10 Archdale Team Wins by Unanimous Decision

This year MLC School had five teams compete in the Archdale quarter finals, two teams compete in the semi-finals and the Year 10 team of Tina, Jade, Doris, Sanya, and Sarah Pearson (Year 10) progress to the Grand Final, which they won by unanimous decision.

A special thanks to the Year 10 students who had to come to school during the holidays, in their school uniform, to compete.  We were a lonely bunch all by ourselves in the Senior Centre at night but the girls were determined to beat Meriden. Luckily, we got our choice of topic in the topic selection and the negative side the girls wanted in the coin toss. All the team had to do was power through the actual debate and convince the three adjudicators it was a bad idea, “That children should be forced to look after their parents in old age”.  The team was awesome and were given the win in an unanimous judge’s decision. The screams of joy echoed through the empty building.

Congratulations girls on a job well-done through a very different year of debating.

Year 10 and the Cadet Program

Year 10 and the Cadet Program

One of the great things about being in Year 10 is being able to experience as many aspects of our co-curricular program as possible before the demands of senior study. One such activity is our cadet group in Year 10. Briar (Year 10) and Madison (Year 10) have given us a unique insight into the program in 2020 under the guidance of Esther Maling as Cadet Coordinator.

‘The cadet unit at Newington College has a long history and has been running since 1869. This year MLC School was given the amazing opportunity to become a part of this program.

We took the opportunity to be a part of history in being the first MLC School students to be a part of the Newington College Cadet Unit (NCCU). This has been an experience which has taught us so much. Not only has this given us an opportunity to develop our leadership skills but also a chance to learn things we wouldn’t necessarily learn in school. For example, throughout the year we have learnt how to communicate through radio transmission, navigation and mapping, First Aid, unit organisation and more.

Being part of a program like this has given us many unforgettable experiences and opportunities. One highlight of the year was the NCCU Final Parade. It was amazing to be a part of something so big, the pride you get marching on the parade ground and the atmosphere created is like no other. This is the feeling of what it is like to be a part of cadets. Every fortnight when we travel to Newington for Home Training there is a sense of excitement as we don’t know what we will do that day but we know it will be amazing.

Another, more recent highlight has been Promotions Camp, which was when we went to Newington on the last two days of the holidays. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we weren’t able to go to the normal camp location, so they had to adapt the camp to be held at Newington. However, this didn’t impact our overall experience, as we were still able to challenge ourselves, be put into unfamiliar environments and enhance the skills needed to be promoted from Cadet and/or Lance Corporal to Sergeant. There were many components to the camp designed to test and improve a wide range of our abilities, such as teamwork, public speaking, management and leadership. And we couldn’t be more grateful for this experience, we have learnt so much not only about ourselves and our capabilities, but also life skills that are not only beneficial for cadets, but also in everyday life.

Cadets has been a very rewarding experience that we highly suggest to anyone who is interested to give it a try because there is nothing to lose, only new experiences to gain and memories to share.’

First Place in Video Matsuri – Japanese Student Short Film Contest

First Place in Video Matsuri – Japanese Student Short Film Contest

Learning a language is not easy – it cannot be achieved overnight. Film production is a difficult task in itself and it is even more difficult when done in a foreign language.

On the behalf of the Japanese Culture Club, congratulations to all the girls who participated in Video Matsuri – Japanese Student Short Film Contest 2020 organised by Japan Foundation.

The Japanese Culture Club entered five short videos, two of which were created by Year 11 students and three by Year 8 students. The key item to be presented in the film was ‘water bottle’, すいとう.

Our Year 11 students, who have only been learning Japanese for less than a year, competed against students who have been studying the language for more than 4 years and were awarded first place of the Senior Secondary Division for their film ‘Plastic Bottles’. The judges’ commented, ‘The winning video had many levels: it contained the metaphorical wisdom of how we cause consequences by our own actions, it had a well-organised story line with a mysterious thriller twist and it was highly regarded because of its subtle message on environmental conservation to reduce plastics.’

To watch the films from our students, please follow the links below.

Highly Commended effort for Alicia

Highly Commended effort for Alicia

The image above is Alicia (Year 10). Alicia competed in the John Locke Institute Essay Competition for 2020 and received a Very Highly Commended prize for her essay in the History section.

Her special interest research project and essay was on women’s rights and the law. It is a very interesting and complex discussion on a challenging and current debate. This is an incredible result from one of our quiet achievers in a highly competitive international competition. Well done Alicia and to Mr Joseph Pfeffer, for his encouragement of Alicia’s efforts.

Chloe’s Design becomes a Mascot for Campaign Against Single-Use Plastics

Chloe’s Design becomes a Mascot for Campaign Against Single-Use Plastics

Plastic Oceans Australia (POA) is a charity organisation operating out of Melbourne, Victoria. The organisation works throughout Australasia to change the way people deal with plastic waste by challenging society’s perceptions about its use and disposability. In August/September of this year, they ran a competition inviting young artists across the country to design and illustrate a new mascot for their campaign against single-use plastics. The mascot is intended to also be used in their Education Program, which is used by students all across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific.

The challenge was sent out to all Year 7 Geography students. After receiving entries from across the country, Chloe (Year 7)’s submission to POA was awarded one of the four Runners Up prizes. Her illustration will be used in their events and marketing materials across the region.

Congratulations, Chloe!

Special Report: Having the Alcohol Discussion

Special Report: Having the Alcohol Discussion

With the impending festive season and end of school celebrations, some teenagers may be feeling ready to party, wanting to put the disruptions, frustrations and disappointments of this past year, behind them.

To ensure our young people stay safe during this time, parents and carers are encouraged to have the alcohol discussion – no matter how difficult or overwhelming it may be. It is important to outline the rules and boundaries around age-appropriate alcohol consumption and what the legal implications may be.

Young people are at greater risk of alcohol-related harm than adults because their brains continue to develop until their mid-twenties. The safest level of alcohol consumption for teenagers, is no alcohol at all, but this may be difficult to enforce and may not prevent them from experimenting. However, parents and carers can influence sensible drinking habits and help minimise the risks.

In this Special Report, a series of discussion points are offered to help make the conversation about alcohol consumption a little easier. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the School for further information or seek medical or professional help.
