FCC at the 2025 World Skills Competition
Just before end of Term 2 Elize de Vos flew to Brisbane to spend a week participating in the 2025 World Skills Competition. Elize competed in the Hospitality division representing the Southwest TAFE.
To receive this honour Elize achieved first place in the WA/State Competition and her prize was the trip to Brisbane and her entry to compete in the National Finals.
Over three days, Elize ensured her cutlery was polished, linens folded, and tables set to perfection as she then waited for Cookery students to prepare the meals which were then served to guests.
On day 1 Elize served the judge’s breakfast. Day 2 was lunch and for the lunch service, Elize prepared and served a mocktail named “The Brizzy”, which is now on the menu at Saltbush Restaurant located within Mandurah TAFE. On day 3 Elize served dinner to the judges.
Elize was successful in obtaining a top 10 place in the national competition.
Elize says of her experience: “I started off with a Cert 2 in Hospitality with nothing further planned – just an extra qualification – and got asked if I wanted to do a regional competition. I thought ‘why not’ so I did it for fun! I ended up coming first so I was sent up to Brisbane for a nationals comp.
“We stayed at Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane. We had to walk every day to the convention and exhibition centre for our competitions which was about a 20-minute walk. We served customers who were leaders from other states. I ended the competition week with a night doing puttputt golf and bowling along with KFC to finish off the hard and stressful week. I even had a nice 2-hour chat with the flight attendants at the back and got given free things! I really enjoyed the experience and am very grateful.”
Well done Elize – We are very proud of you!
