Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Foundation Christian College: Honouring Culture, Sharing Stories

Last week, Foundation Christian College came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week—a special time to recognise and honour the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a Christian college, we see NAIDOC Week as a valuable opportunity to reflect on the importance of reconciliation, respect, and relationship—values that are deeply rooted in our faith.

This year’s celebration was particularly meaningful as we welcomed Aboriginal artist and College Alumni Jayvin Cooper to our school community. Jayvin shared his personal journey with art and spoke about how Aboriginal art is a way to tell stories, pass down knowledge, and stay connected to land and identity. His passion inspired our students to see art as a powerful form of cultural expression and storytelling. We also welcomed Margaret Jacobs as our guest speaker, whose history with the college spans to our beginning. Mrs Jacobs encouraged us to do all we can to be united in Christ.

Students also enjoyed a hands-on experience learning how to make traditional damper over a campfire. The smell of fresh damper, the sound of crackling firewood, and the stories shared around the flames created a wonderful atmosphere of learning and connection.

As followers of Christ, we believe all people are made in the image of God and that every culture reflects His creativity and purpose. Celebrating NAIDOC Week is one way we show our commitment to love our neighbours, listen to their stories, and seek reconciliation through understanding and grace.

We are grateful to Jayvin Cooper and MArgaret Jacobs for generously sharing their time and knowledge, and to our staff and students who approached the week with such open hearts. May we continue to walk in respect and unity as we grow together in faith and understanding.
