So, in the hotseat this edition is Kate Guirguis, Acting Head of Admissions, Toorak College
When and where did your career in education begin?
My first role in education was at Shelford Girls’ Grammar in 2022, where I started as the Human Resources & Risk Manager. With a background in HR and Operations Strategy & Leadership, I progressed to the role of Director of People and Governance, a position I held until the school’s closure last year. After navigating a challenging yet rewarding period, I knew I wanted to remain in the education sector while expanding my knowledge and experience. This led me to join Toorak College as the Acting Head of Admissions for 2025.
What interests you most in terms of your role?
I love applying my existing skills and knowledge in a new area while gaining deeper insight into school operations. Admissions provides a unique opportunity to utilise my leadership and strategy skills while working closely with families. I thoroughly enjoy being on the ‘family-facing’ side of the school, building relationships and supporting families through their enrolment journey.
What do you find the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my role is helping families navigate one of the most significant decisions they will make for their child’s future. Guiding them to discover how their child can thrive at Toorak College and ensuring they feel confident in their decision is incredibly fulfilling, being part of their journey from the initial enquiry through to their child’s first day.
Who is your biggest role model in terms of leadership?
Earlier in my career, I worked for TONI&GUY in HR and Operations, where I had the opportunity to learn from Dennis Langford. I found his ability to make every individual feel valued and heard – whether a client or a staff member, truly inspiring. His commitment to prioritising people’s experiences left a lasting impression on me and continues to shape how I engage with both colleagues and families at work.
What aspect of your role do you love the most?
I love the balance between ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day processes, as well as focusing on strategy and planning. I love revising and improving procedures to enhance the experience for prospective families. At the same time, I love to develop and implement strategies to drive future growth.
What are you currently doing that would be of interest to other members in Educate Plus?
Toorak College recently implemented Veracross for managing enquiries and applications, and we are now progressing to use it for student enrolment and onboarding. This has been a significant project as we navigate how to best leverage the software!
