Year 8 Japanese cooking – Sushi with Chef Hideo Dekura

Year 8 Japanese cooking – Sushi with Chef Hideo Dekura

Year 8 students had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culinary traditions through an engaging, hands-on workshop with renowned Chef Hideo Dekura.

Under Chef Dekura’s expert guidance, students learnt the art of sushi-making—from preparing sushi ingredients to rolling their own inside out sushi as well as flower sushi. The session blended practical skills with cultural appreciation, giving students insight into the precision, care, and etiquette behind Japanese cuisine.

In addition to sushi, students sampled matcha (green tea) and traditional wagashi—beautifully crafted Japanese sweets often enjoyed during tea ceremonies. This authentic tasting experience introduced students to new textures and flavours while deepening their understanding of Japanese culture and hospitality.

The workshop was a memorable celebration of food, culture, and creativity—arigatou gozaimasu, Chef Dekura!
