Gospel Reflection for 23rd June - Feast of Corpus Christi - Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate

Dear Parents, Carers, Students, Staff and Friends,
A Stitch of Compassion, A Thread of Hope

When we think of saving a life, we often imagine the heroic – acts that make headlines: pulling someone from a fire, rescuing a swimmer caught in a rip, or performing a dramatic rescue. But not all acts of saving are loud or visible.

Sometimes, saving a life looks like a group of teenage girls gathering at lunchtime in a quiet room, learning to knit and crochet with patience and purpose. It looks like a 90-year-old woman, living with fading memory, still contributing by crafting a single square. It looks like our Domremy students thoughtfully preparing sandwiches for someone they may never meet, giving quietly and generously.

At Domremy College, our Knitting Club and Vinnies Sandwich Making Afternoons are humble yet deeply meaningful acts of service and solidarity. Each stitch in a handmade blanket, each sandwich wrapped with care, speaks of compassion and dignity. These are not just meals or warm items – they are symbols of community and hope.

The Most Commonly Used Bread for Sandwiches | Lady's Choice

This week, we received feedback from the St Vincent de Paul Society, who reminded us that what we create and give can be life-saving. Our donations of scarves, beanies, blankets and sandwiches don’t just protect against the cold and hunger; they remind people they are seen and valued. These gifts say, “You matter. Someone took time to care for you.”

And as much as these acts bless others, they also enrich our students and staff. The Knitting Club and the Sandwich Making group have become a space of friendship, mentorship and shared purpose, a tapestry of compassion that strengthens the fabric of our school community.

We are so grateful to every student, staff member and volunteer who participates in these quiet, powerful ministries. You may not make the evening news, but you are changing lives.

NAPLAN and Academic Data

Individual NAPLAN student reports will be sent to schools in early Term 3 for distribution to families. National results will be published by ACARA in August, at which point we will better understand our students’ performance relative to national benchmarks.

NAPLAN 2025 | Bletchley Park Primary School

We have already received writing results, which place our cohorts largely in the “Strong” performance band. We are analysing the data to determine our priority areas for each cohort. These results, combined with data from the Academic Services Assessments in Years 6 and 8, give us a comprehensive view of student progress from pre-commencement through to Year 10, just prior to senior subject selection.

These assessments, aligned with NAPLAN Years 5, 7 and 9, provide strong evidence that literacy – particularly reading and writing – must remain a core priority. We are committed to implementing strategies that continue to enhance our students’ learning outcomes in these areas.

End of Term 2 Preparations
  • Year 11 Subject Selection Interviews
Bookings are now open for Monday 30 June, 10:00am–3:00pm. These meetings are essential in supporting Year 10 students in their senior pathway choices.

Prayer

Prayer

A young girl recently told her Mum something that stopped me in my tracks.

She said, “I saw God in the clouds today.

You know, He was sneaking out in those little rays of light.”

No big speech, no theology, just a moment of wonder.

My child’s eyes caught something the rest of us

often miss: light spilling through a cloudy sky, and in it, the quiet presence of God.

It’s easy to think of God in grand gestures like burning bushes,

parted seas, and voices from heaven,

but Nano Nagle taught us to seek God in the ordinary,

the hidden, the everyday.

That quiet presence, the hand on a shoulder,

a thoughtful text message, a warm smile from a stranger,

a cuppa shared without hurry.

Maybe God sneaks out in more ways than we realize,

not to hide, but to surprise and gently awaken.

St. John of the Cross reminds us, “God walks into your soul with silent steps.

”Let’s be people who look for light breaking through the clouds,

classrooms, and conversations,

and may we learn to trust that God is always near,

with the knowledge that His “light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has not overcome it”

(John 1:5)

On Wednesday, 4 June, I took part in a Vinnies Sandwich making initiative after school, where various students came together to prepare sandwiches for those in need. This hands-on experience was a valuable opportunity to work together towards a greater good. Ultimately, serving as a reminder that the acts we might perceive as ‘small’, can actually make a big difference to those less fortunate – Isabelle, Y 12.

Year 8 Japanese cooking – Sushi with Chef Hideo Dekura

Year 8 Japanese cooking – Sushi with Chef Hideo Dekura

Year 8 students had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culinary traditions through an engaging, hands-on workshop with renowned Chef Hideo Dekura.

Under Chef Dekura’s expert guidance, students learnt the art of sushi-making—from preparing sushi ingredients to rolling their own inside out sushi as well as flower sushi. The session blended practical skills with cultural appreciation, giving students insight into the precision, care, and etiquette behind Japanese cuisine.

In addition to sushi, students sampled matcha (green tea) and traditional wagashi—beautifully crafted Japanese sweets often enjoyed during tea ceremonies. This authentic tasting experience introduced students to new textures and flavours while deepening their understanding of Japanese culture and hospitality.

The workshop was a memorable celebration of food, culture, and creativity—arigatou gozaimasu, Chef Dekura!

Year 8 Italian: Pasta making with Chef Luca

Year 8 Italian: Pasta making with Chef Luca

We absolutely loved the Italian cooking incursion last Wednesday! It was a brilliant, hands-on way to explore Italian culture and the language we’re studying. The lesson was fun filled, as it allowed us to see what it’s like to be an Italian chef for a day. Head Chef Luca, accompanied by his two assistants, was not only funny and entertaining but also very knowledgeable. We learnt how to make pasta from scratch, and our Italian vocabulary even got a boost thanks to Chef Luca speaking in Italian and using helpful flashcards. We are very grateful for this engaging opportunity as it was the perfect way to support us in our learning. The pasta was also Buonissima!

We would like to thank all the teachers involved in particular Mrs Clarke for organising this fun incursion as well as our teachers Mrs Vari, Miss Intilli and Mr Thomas.

Grazie mille!

Isabella and Amelia, Y8

Romeo and Juliet Incursion – Year 9

Romeo and Juliet Incursion – Year 9

The Romeo and Juliet incursion by the Shakespeare Company was an exciting and memorable experience that helped me understand the play in a deeper way. At first, I was surprised to see that only three actors were performing, but I was impressed by how well they brought the story to life. They changed costumes and personalities so quickly and effectively that it felt like there were many more characters on stage. Their performance skills and energy made the whole play come alive in front of us.

One part that really stood out to me was the prologue. The actors performed a short dramatic scene that gave us a clear preview of what would happen in the play and how Shakespeare prepares the audience for the tragic events to come.

The portrayal of Juliet was one of the most powerful parts of the performance. It showed her bravery and how deeply she loved Romeo. I was struck by how willing she was to sacrifice her family’s expectations for love, which highlighted her loving and caring nature. I also saw the Nurse in a new light – in the performance, she came across as motherly and genuinely caring toward Juliet, which made me rethink her role in the story.

The actors made Shakespeare’s language easier to understand by explaining sections and acting them out clearly. Their explanations and their emotional delivery helped me feel connected to the story. Watching the play made the experience feel more real.and I was able to relate to the characters and engage with the storyline on a deeper level.

There were many moments throughout the incursion that were funny, emotional, and even a bit surprising. The actors did a great job balancing the dramatic and humorous parts of the play, which kept us interested the whole time.

I definitely enjoyed the live performance and would love to see more Shakespeare incursions in the future. Seeing the play performed helped me understand it so much better and made the experience more fun. Next year, when we study another Shakespeare text, I hope we get to have another incursion like this. It really brings the story to life and helps us learn in a different, more exciting way.

Speaking 4 the Planet

Speaking 4 the Planet

Domremy students joined schools across Canada Bay Council for this year’s Speaking 4 the Planet competition at Rosebank College.

Our girls were exposed to the innovative ideas of Dr Karl, a renowned environmentalist and scientist, who implored his knowledge on climate change to the group in the hopes that we, as future leaders, will utilise this information and make a positive change to our world. Dr Karl enlightened many students and teachers across our community on the staggering statistics climate change has imposed on our world, and most importantly, the ways we, as enablers of change, can improve our world.

Along with Dr Karl’s impressive insight, speakers included our local government representatives, Ms Stephanie Di Pasqua, Mr Jason Yat-Sen Li, and Ms Sally Sitou.

The organisers as well as student speakers, actors, artists, writers and helpers all came together to make the competition an enlightening experience that resulted in Domremy gold. Significant accomplishments including:

Our amazing Year 10 Drama group (Sarah, Addison, Olivia, Lucia, Maeve) won 1st place with a powerful performance

Kaya (Y8) wowed the judges and won 1st place in the Recycled Art category

Allanah (Y10) took out 3rd place in the Writing category

Well done to all of the girls who entered the competition last week. Speaking 4 the Planet 2025 was another successful event of group learning, environmental awareness, and fun for all who came.

Environment Committee Update

Environment Committee Update

Thursday June 5 was World Environment Day, where millions around the world recognised the urgent need to protect and restore our natural environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year’s theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, calls for global action to tackle the growing crisis of plastic pollution. It highlights the impact of plastic on land, water, and air, and emphasises the need for collective action to address plastic waste.

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 11 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

World Environment Day is a moment to reflect on the role each of us plays in shaping a more sustainable world. Our Environment Committee continues to raise awareness around important environmental issues. This term, we have focused on the environmental impact of fast fashion, the persistent issue of microplastics, and the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence technologies. All students are welcome, and encouraged to join the committee every Monday Week B in the theatrette at lunch time.

Canada Bay Council Community Environmental Grant

Canada Bay Council Community Environmental Grant

We are delighted to announce that Domremy College has been successful in securing a Community Environment Grant from the City of Canada Bay Council. This grant will support the revitalisation and expansion of our on-campus vegetable and herb garden.

The funding will go toward upgrading garden infrastructure, improving sustainability practices, and increasing student involvement in growing fresh, organic produce. The enhanced garden will serve as a dynamic outdoor learning space where students can engage with environmental education, healthy eating habits, and the importance of local food systems, also using the food grown in our food technology and hospitality classes.

We thank Canada Bay Council for their generous support and look forward to sharing the progress of this exciting project with our school community. Keep an eye out for updates as we grow … together!

The Dolce Vita Collection: A Celebration of Wearable Art

The Dolce Vita Collection: A Celebration of Wearable Art

This term, Year 9 Design and Technology students brought the Mediterranean to life through The Dolce Vita Collection,  a jewellery design project inspired by Australian brands Erstwilder and Gorman.

Using laser cutting techniques, students created vibrant, one-of-a-kind pieces including brooches, earrings, necklaces, and charm bracelets. From layered gondolas and lemon slices to scooters and pasta charms, each design captured a playful sense of summer with bold colour and personality.

The girls showed impressive technical skills and a willingness to think outside the box, blending fun with function. Their work highlighted creative storytelling, clever layering, and an eye for aesthetic detail.

Ethics Club and the Senior School Ethics Olympiad

Ethics Club and the Senior School Ethics Olympiad

This semester, Domremy’s Ethics Club has focussed its lunchtime conversations around the set cases for the 2025 Senior School Ethics Olympiad. This year’s cases have led to really thoughtful discussions from a variety of perspectives. Our girls have particularly enjoyed discussing the ethical implications of eating some animals over others (or none at all), the use of curfews as a means of reducing youth crime, the revision of literature (and other art works) to better represent current world views and the ethical collection and use of data.

We entered a Year 10 team and a Year 11 team into this year’s Senior Olympiad. All students represented our College with pride and engaged enthusiastically in very thoughtful and respectful discussions around the cases. They explored these through a variety of ethical frameworks and considered perspectives from a variety of cultures, genders, ages and experiences.

It is with great pleasure that we congratulate all involved and, in particular, our Year 11 team members who were awarded an Honourable Mention in this year’s competition. Below is a reflection from two members of this team, who have been involved in the Olympiad over the last three years.

“We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to participate in the Senior Ethics Olympiad with three other Year 11 girls where we competed with fellow senior students across Australia in various ethical discussions. We spent hours reading and discussing cases, hearing from other students and learning each others’ various ideas. Over the years these events have given us the opportunity to strengthen our empathy and critical thinking skills, allowed us to share our thoughts and encouraged us to step beyond our comfort zones and broaden the landscapes of our mind.” Georgia and Juliet (Year 11)

Flight Centre Travel Academy  – Tourism Shapers Youth Advisory Workshop

Flight Centre Travel Academy  – Tourism Shapers Youth Advisory Workshop

This week, five students had the opportunity to take part in a Youth Advisory Workshop about studies and careers in Travel and Tourism, led by BOP Industries and Flight Centre Travel Academy (FCTA).

FCTA offers a Diploma of Travel and Tourism which focuses on job ready learning and allows students to work with experienced professionals in the industry. It supports students who wish to pursue a career in a variety of travel or tourism roles including hotel management, aviation, cabin crew hosting and travel agency work. It can be commenced in Year 12 and also serves as the first year of a Business Degree which provides students with a variety of early entry pathways.

During the workshop students were asked to reflect on metacognition (how they think and learn) and their preferred style of assessment. They were taught about the current Diploma and asked to undertake a SWOT Analysis of this, identifying Strengths, Opportunities, Weaknesses and possible Threats. Students were asked to consider others’ perspectives and developed a Persona (a common entrepreneurial process). They then reflected upon their own academic resilience and how they persevere with learning when faced with challenges or a lack of motivation. Finally, the group took part in an Ideation task where they considered new ways of incorporating assessment in a creative, practical and real-world way.

When asked to contribute, our girls spoke about the importance of teacher support and the feedback they receive here at school as a crucial step in their academic and personal development. They spoke about their enjoyment of collaborating with others and how they focus on the achievement of their personal goals as a means to remain motivated. It was a pleasure to hear that what they learn here at Domremy is serving them well!

Through today’s experience, students contributed to shaping new ways of learning and assessment in the Travel and Tourism industry which was appreciated by FCTA and will be used by them to shape the future of their Diploma. They experienced a variety of reflective tools and entrepreneurial processes and were able to consider their own approach to learning; an experience that will serve them well in all future studies at school and beyond.

Some student reflections follow.

“On Wednesday, the 18th of June, we were given the opportunity, alongside 3 other students, to attend the FCTA workshop where we engaged in insightful tasks and became educated on travel and tourism and the opportunities offered within the Flight Centre Diploma. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allowed us to collaborate with the FCTA team to brainstorm possible strengths and weaknesses of the program, whilst presenting our ideas on how we may build on these factors to benefit the future of the Diploma for all students. We are grateful to have been a part of and experienced this event, as we grasp skills that we can apply in different aspects of our lives.” Mariam and Lara (Year 10)

“Our experience today was insightful and interactive. We learnt about various career pathways that are very flexible and cooperative with your needs and give you the benefits of the domain. We learnt valuable opportunities and collaborative activities that can assist us in future. We met new people which benefited our understanding by hearing their thoughts. One activity that stood out to us was creating a project for a student who’s currently studying which enabled our problem solving and critical thinking. This program was a very positive experience for us that we enjoyed and we hope to come across more events like this.” Liana, Victoria and Taylor (Year 9)

Ethical Explorations Day 2025

Ethical Explorations Day 2025

Year 11 students represented Domremy College at this year’s inter school Ethical Explorations Day, hosted by Rosebank College and facilitated by staff from The Ethics Centre. The day consisted of three main sessions.

Students began by mingling as they started to explore the concept of Identity, discussing their ideas within 30 different paired groups. They reflected upon their values and what continues to shape them as individuals and openly listened to the perspectives of others. After morning tea, students participated in Philosophical Communities of Inquiry. They collaboratively explored and ranked the criteria used to make good choices. Areas under consideration included personal and cultural values, human rights, fairness and justice, the long term and unintended consequences of decision making, harm and suffering, the role of emotions and bias and the relationship between ethics and rules. After lunch students engaged in an interactive discussion in which they were asked to apply their criteria and values to particular scenarios and explain the reasoning behind their choices.

It was a wonderful day, which allowed our students to deeply reflect upon their own values and ethical decision making. Students commented on their unexpected learning that not all people their age hold the same or similar positions and were challenged on occasion by some perspectives that were very different to theirs.

It is via opportunities such as these that we, as global citizens, can genuinely listen to try to understand the perspectives of others and strengthen our own ethical approaches and decision making. It was very pleasing to hear our students reflect upon the need for greater respectful discourse and their willingness to be open-minded while still holding true to their core values.

Congratulations to all Domremy students who took part. Your input was invaluable and your respect for others was notably front and centre of all discussions. Well done!

‘Baked by Sof’ Workshop – Year 9 Food Tech gets a Taste of the Sweet Life

‘Baked by Sof’ Workshop – Year 9 Food Tech gets a Taste of the Sweet Life

Our Year 9 Food Technology students recently enjoyed a deliciously creative experience during the ‘Baked by Sof’ Cupcake & Cookie School Workshop. Led by ex-student and baking talent Sofia Sgroi, the workshop offered a hands-on look into the world of baking and cake decorating.

The session began with a live demonstration on how to make light and fluffy vanilla buttercream from scratch. They were then introduced to the art of colouring buttercream using gel-based dyes and experimented with a variety of piping techniques to create swirls, stars, and rosettes. A few lucky students even had the chance to try piping a cupcake themselves!

In the second half of the session, the focus shifted to fondant decorating. Students were guided through rolling, cutting, and embossing fondant to design two pre-baked cookies. Each student was provided with tools, fondant, and packaging to bring their creations to life and take them home.

This workshop not only gave students a fun and memorable experience, but also equipped them with real-world decorating skills they will apply in their upcoming assessment task, where they will be designing and creating a custom cake for a special event.

A huge thank you to Sofia for her time, energy and generosity in sharing her skills — and inspiring the next generation of creative bakers!

Year 7 Mobile Dairy Incursion

Year 7 Mobile Dairy Incursion

On Wednesday, 4 June, our Year 7 Technology students were treated to an engaging and hands-on visit from A Smart Farmer, a mobile dairy incursion that brings the farm experience directly to schools.

Farmer Jess and her assistant Tiana arrived with three friendly cows from their Camden property: three Jersey Heifers, named ‘HD’, ‘Memory’, and ‘Shamrock’

Throughout the morning, students had the opportunity to milk a cow, observe the process of separating milk and cream, and even try their hand at making soft cheese. Farmer Jess also shared valuable insights into how a dairy farm operates, explained the various breeds of dairy cows in Australia, and explored the journey milk takes from cow to consumer.

It was a fun, educational, and very memorable experience for all involved!

Dr Huron spoke with passion and clarity, offering real-world examples that highlighted the exciting possibilities awaiting our young women in STEM fields. Her presence and message were a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, innovation, and confidence — qualities we hope to nurture in all our students.

Combined Schools Book Club

Combined Schools Book Club

We were certainly excited to welcome students from several schools in our Inner West region to Domremy College for a morning of celebration and everything books. The number of students attending proved that reading is still a popular and exhilarating activity amongst our young people, and that enjoyment of a good read and social interaction is both entertaining every bit as much as it is educational.

We welcomed students from St Patrick’s College, Strahfield, Trinity Grammar, and Christian Brothers Lewisham.

We heard from Paul McDonald, President of the CBCA (Childrens’ Book Council of Australia) and an inspiring advocate of all things Young Adult Fiction. His knowledge and ability to captivate a young audience is truly inspirational!

The Junior (Years 7-8) and Senior Club (Years 9-12) then divided into two groups where they forged friendships and talked about the latest Fantasy novels they had been reading. This was then followed by a provided morning tea.

Thank you to Jessica Lonard, Head of Library, from St Patrick’s as well who led the Senior group book discussions whilst I led the Junior students.

Here is a brief perspective on the events of the morning by Lara from Year 10;

This week, Domremy College was thrilled to host the first  7-10 Booknook club of 2025 where we came together to share our common interest and love for books. This event was a fun and memorable way to celebrate the power of books as well as form new friendships with students from other schools.

The Knitting Club has had a strong uptake having started again this Term, with students invited to knit and crochet scarves and beanies during lunchtime. These handmade items will be donated to Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a not-for-profit hospital that provides care and support for people undergoing cancer treatment. We will also be making blankets for some of our furry friends in pet shelters.

As Mother Theresa once said, “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” Through this initiative, students have the opportunity to offer warmth and comfort to those facing difficult times, embodying the values of compassion and service.

📅 When: Lunchtimes, Wednesday and Friday, Term 2 and Term 3

📍 Where: Makerspace

Those new to knitting or crocheting will have the chance to learn from more experienced students.

The club appreciates all donations of wool 8 and 10ply and particularly crochet hooks of 4.5 up to 5.5.  We endeavour to provide necessary materials, including yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks to those girls who do not have them. Thank you to the many generous donations of supplies made already, all of which are greatly appreciated and are being put to good use!

Senior Football Team at Semi Finals

Senior Football Team at Semi Finals

Our Senior Football Team competed in the SCS Semi Finals yesterday, playing in a very even battle against Marist Sisters Woolwich. Every single player displayed grit and determination and persevered for the duration of the game. The end score of normal playing time was 1-1. The game then went into penalty shoutouts, where we were unfortunately defeated. The girls should all be very proud of their amazing season and can definitely hold their heads up high!

Giorgianna at the Synchronised Swimming National Championships – Melbourne

Giorgianna at the Synchronised Swimming National Championships – Melbourne

We congratulate Giorgianna, who had the incredible opportunity to compete at the Synchronised Swimming National Championships in Melbourne with her team, the “Sydney Emeralds” who placed 3rd!

“It was an unforgettable experience where I performed youth figures and took part in the Tech Youth Team routine alongside some exceptionally talented athletes. We had the opportunity to watch and talk to the Australian olympic team for Synchronised Swimming, it was truly an amazing experience.

The competition was fierce, with six teams battling for podium positions—some even representing international clubs. After a lot of dedication and teamwork, we proudly secured third place. It was an amazing achievement, and I couldn’t be happier with how our team performed.

Beyond the results, the entire experience was fantastic. From the energy of the competition to the friendships formed along the way, it was a memorable journey that I’ll cherish. I had so much fun and learned so much, making it an event I’ll never forget.” Giorgianna
