Ethical Explorations Day 2025

Year 11 students represented Domremy College at this year’s inter school Ethical Explorations Day, hosted by Rosebank College and facilitated by staff from The Ethics Centre. The day consisted of three main sessions.

Students began by mingling as they started to explore the concept of Identity, discussing their ideas within 30 different paired groups. They reflected upon their values and what continues to shape them as individuals and openly listened to the perspectives of others. After morning tea, students participated in Philosophical Communities of Inquiry. They collaboratively explored and ranked the criteria used to make good choices. Areas under consideration included personal and cultural values, human rights, fairness and justice, the long term and unintended consequences of decision making, harm and suffering, the role of emotions and bias and the relationship between ethics and rules. After lunch students engaged in an interactive discussion in which they were asked to apply their criteria and values to particular scenarios and explain the reasoning behind their choices.

It was a wonderful day, which allowed our students to deeply reflect upon their own values and ethical decision making. Students commented on their unexpected learning that not all people their age hold the same or similar positions and were challenged on occasion by some perspectives that were very different to theirs. 

It is via opportunities such as these that we, as global citizens, can genuinely listen to try to understand the perspectives of others and strengthen our own ethical approaches and decision making. It was very pleasing to hear our students reflect upon the need for greater respectful discourse and their willingness to be open-minded while still holding true to their core values.
