‘Baked by Sof’ Workshop – Year 9 Food Tech gets a Taste of the Sweet Life
Our Year 9 Food Technology students recently enjoyed a deliciously creative experience during the ‘Baked by Sof’ Cupcake & Cookie School Workshop. Led by ex-student and baking talent Sofia Sgroi, the workshop offered a hands-on look into the world of baking and cake decorating.
The session began with a live demonstration on how to make light and fluffy vanilla buttercream from scratch. They were then introduced to the art of colouring buttercream using gel-based dyes and experimented with a variety of piping techniques to create swirls, stars, and rosettes. A few lucky students even had the chance to try piping a cupcake themselves!
In the second half of the session, the focus shifted to fondant decorating. Students were guided through rolling, cutting, and embossing fondant to design two pre-baked cookies. Each student was provided with tools, fondant, and packaging to bring their creations to life and take them home.
This workshop not only gave students a fun and memorable experience, but also equipped them with real-world decorating skills they will apply in their upcoming assessment task, where they will be designing and creating a custom cake for a special event.
A huge thank you to Sofia for her time, energy and generosity in sharing her skills — and inspiring the next generation of creative bakers!
