Seeds of Science: nurturing knowledge for all.<\/em> <\/strong>This year\u2019s theme invites us to think about how ideas begin, how they are tested, and how they grow when shared. It reminds us that scientific understanding does not appear fully formed. It starts small \u2013 like a seed \u2013 and depends on the right conditions: curiosity, evidence, collaboration and time. All are needed for nurturing knowledge and growing scientific understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than 65,000 years, First Nations peoples have been reading the skies, understanding the seasons and tending to the native seeds and ecosystems of Country with deep wisdom. As educators, we recognise that just like the knowledge of our first scientists, true learning takes root when it is nurtured and shared and so we are firmly committed to encouraging curiosity and lifelong learning for both ourselves and the students in our care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the Science staff celebrated Science Week by launching competitions to see who could grow the largest bean plant and the cutest grass seed pet. Students were also encouraged to view the plant world in a different light using dissecting microscopes which provided close-up encounters not possible with the naked eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course the highlight of the week was the Santa Science Showcase evening which once again featured presentations covering a diverse range of topics. These included current Year 11 STEM club students who shared their passion for exploring the world of rockets, motors and solar cars; Anna Millward who spoke about her accidental choice of studying Forensic Science which segued into a passion for further study into Women’s Health and Embryology; Bosco Wu who challenged us with his notion of \u2018Question Zero\u2019; Lara Stallard-Taylor who shared insights into the world of drug development; and Claudia Novati who explained to us how science explains, maths measures and engineering makes and that all three can be found wherever we look in the world around us. Although each presentation was unique they all spoke about and reiterated the importance of curiosity, questioning and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of the Science department I would like to thank all of our presenters who willingly gave up their time to share not only their knowledge with us, but to also demonstrate how the Seeds of Science were planted and flourished in their various careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
