The John Locke Institute Essay Competition attracts thousands of international entries annually and challenges students to engage thoughtfully with complex philosophical questions.

In her essay, Is Free Speech the Enemy of Science? Donna explored a challenging and intellectually significant question, demonstrating exceptional critical thinking, research skills and the ability to construct a sophisticated and persuasive argument. Her work opens with a compelling case study that highlights the relationship between scientific innovation, intellectual freedom and established consensus:

In 1984, Australian gastroenterologist, Barry Marshall, swallowed a beaker of Helicobacter pylori bacteria to prove that the medical establishment was wrong. His research, which suggested that stomach ulcers were caused by bacterial infection, had been rejected and ranked among the bottom 10 percent of submissions by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia. Yet, within two decades, Marshall’s discovery transformed modern medicine and earned him a Nobel Prize.

His story illustrates a central problem at the heart of scientific progress; when institutions become guardians of widespread consensus they can suppress the very ideas that later prove revolutionary.

Drawing on examples such as Marshall’s groundbreaking research, Donna examined the tension between scientific consensus and open debate, considering whether unrestricted inquiry and free speech are essential ingredients for scientific progress. Her essay demonstrated intellectual maturity, extensive research and a sophisticated engagement with competing perspectives.

The strength of her argument is evident in the essay’s concluding reflections:

That is no coincidence. It is what the argument predicts. A scientific community that decides in advance what may not be expressed has not protected itself from error; it has merely ensured that error goes unchallenged. Free speech cannot be the enemy of science as it is what permits the exploration of hypotheses that exist nowhere until someone is free to say it. It is the only condition under which science remains capable of correcting itself, and the only protection any of us have against the orthodoxy that is, right now, confidently wrong.

Being recognised by an international panel of academics and subject experts is a remarkable accomplishment. Donna’s success highlights the strength of inquiry, scholarship and critical thinking that we value in our Santa Sabina learning community. Her shortlisting reflects not only academic excellence, but also the intellectual curiosity and independence of thought that characterise outstanding scholarship. A huge thank you to Dr Christopher Richardson who guided and supported Donna.

Donna’s success is a source of great pride for the HSIE Department and the subject of Philosophy and World Studies.

Ms Brigida Zagora
Head of HSIE

Congratulations to Donna De Silva from Year 9 Philosophy and World Studies, who has been shortlisted in the highly regarded John Locke Institute International Essay Competition for her essay, Is Free Speech the Enemy of Science?
