{"id":10973,"date":"2024-05-15T14:06:25","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T04:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/ssc\/?post_type=article&#038;p=10973"},"modified":"2024-05-20T08:22:47","modified_gmt":"2024-05-19T22:22:47","slug":"celebrating-student-history-extension-success-hsc-prize","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/ssc\/article\/celebrating-student-history-extension-success-hsc-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Student History Extension Success HSC Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Monday 25 March, Ella Curran (Class of 2023) was recognised by the History Teachers\u2019 Association of New South Wales and awarded Runner Up in the History Extension Essay Prize. Ella\u2019s project, entitled <em>Poetry and the \u2018Just War\u2019, <\/em>assessed the influence of trench poetry in the teaching of First World War history on British cultural memory and perception of the war. Her achievement was celebrated at the inter-school High Achievers\u2019 Ceremony held at the University of Sydney\u2019s Chau Chak Wing Museum. Ella was supported by her History Extension teacher and Essay supervisor, Lauren Jenkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the eight-month process of research, drafting and editing, Ella stated that she &#8216;actually would do it all again&#8217;. She commented on the rewarding nature of watching her essay develop from a mere couple of questions to a 2500 word essay that wrestled with complex historiographical debates such as Does truth exist? and Are there merits to postmodernist approaches to historical analysis?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2024 students undertaking History Extension, Ella emphasised the importance of asking questions and taking risks, noting &#8216;don\u2019t be afraid to fail\u2026 starting again is a good thing&#8217; for such challenges force students to be critical, problem solve and consider new perspectives.
