Helping the elderly – Weelya’s hands-on experience
In Semester 2, a group of girls from Weelya House enacted the House Salamana Project of Helping the Elderly by visiting residents at Goondee Aged Care Home in Strathfield.
The visits, held each Tuesday after school, involved students joining residents on site to play games, converse, colour in and do puzzles together. The interaction between students and residents was heartwarming to see, and some truly meaningful connections were made.
Each week residents looked forward to meeting new students and having a change in their routine, and whilst the experience took many of the girls out of their comfort zone, it has taught them to be patient and improve their communication skills.
The girls have been able to put their visits towards their Las Casas Service Learning Record, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award service commitments and the Creativity Activity Service component of the IB.
