While achievements in the classroom, on the sporting field and in the arts are certainly worthy of celebration, it is often the way our girls support one another and those around them that best reflects who we are as a College.

Throughout the year, we welcome new students into our community. Joining a new school can be daunting, particularly when friendships and routines are already established. What continues to impress me is the way our students embrace these new members of the St Pat’s family. Whether it is inviting someone to sit with them at lunch, helping them navigate the campus, or simply offering a friendly smile and conversation, our girls consistently demonstrate kindness, inclusion and genuine care for others. These seemingly small acts can make an enormous difference and help ensure that every student feels valued, connected and supported.

This spirit of community was also on display at the recent Rowing Erg Regatta. While the event naturally involved an element of competition, it was heartening to see our students enthusiastically cheering not only for their fellow St Patrick’s College Townsville competitors, but also for students from other schools. Encouraging others, congratulating performances and celebrating effort regardless of the school represented demonstrated a maturity and sportsmanship that should make our entire community proud. In those moments, our students showed that success is not simply about winning; it is also about supporting others to do their best.

The theme of belonging was also evident at this week’s Tweddell Leadership Dinner. College Captain Mary Lansley spoke proudly of the strong sense of community that defines life at St Pat’s. She described the College as a place where girls feel connected to something greater than themselves, where friendships flourish, achievements are celebrated, and every student is encouraged to contribute. Her reflections highlighted a truth that many students, families and staff would recognise immediately: St Pat’s is not simply a place we attend, but a community that shapes us and remains with us long after we leave.

Another highlight this week was the Year 11 Prefect Speeches. Standing in front of peers, staff and members of the College community takes considerable courage, and I was immensely impressed by the confidence, authenticity and conviction demonstrated by our students. While each candidate brought her own perspective and aspirations, a common theme emerged throughout the speeches: a genuine desire to give back to the community that has helped shape them. Again and again, students spoke not about what leadership could do for them, but about the positive difference they hoped to make for others. It was a powerful reminder that leadership at St Patrick’s is grounded in service. Listening to these young women speak with such confidence, purpose and self-awareness left me optimistic about the future, not only of our College, but also of the wider community. The quality of the candidates, together with their commitment to serving others, reflects the values we seek to nurture in every St Patrick’s student.

That message was reinforced for me during the Year 9 Camp. As the day drew to a close, students gathered around the campfire, sharing stories, laughter and conversation. Accompanied by Mr Kris Farmer on guitar, the girls began singing John Denver’s Country Roads. As they sang the familiar line, “Take me home, to the place I belong,” I was struck by the significance of those words. For many of our students, St Pat’s has become exactly that: a place where they are known, valued and accepted. Watching the girls sing together around the campfire was a powerful reminder that a genuine sense of belonging is one of the greatest gifts a school community can offer.

Year 9 Camp.

Equally important is the sense of fun that continues to characterise life at the College. Whether through House activities, extracurricular events, camps, sporting competitions or everyday classroom experiences, laughter and enjoyment remain an important part of building a positive school culture. Shared experiences create lasting memories and strengthen the relationships that connect students across year levels. It is often these moments of joy and connection that students remember long after they leave school.

Our boarding community also plays a significant role in fostering this culture. New friendships are formed, younger students are supported by older role models, and girls learn the importance of living and working together in a respectful and caring environment. The sense of sisterhood that develops through these experiences is one of the defining features of a St Patrick’s College Townsville education.

At St Pat’s, we are fortunate to be part of a community where students genuinely care for one another, celebrate each other’s successes and lift each other up when challenges arise. That spirit of connection and belonging is at the heart of who we are, and it continues to make St Patrick’s College Townsville a welcoming, vibrant and truly special place.

Patrick Morrow

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – OPERATIONS, STAFF & COMMUNITY

Community, Belonging and Spirit One of the greatest strengths of St Patrick’s College Townsville is the sense of community that is evident in the everyday actions of our students.
