\u00a0<\/strong>the constitution from guest speakers from the law department at JCU and had the opportunity to engage in lively discussion with students from other schools. Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament<\/h3>\n
On Friday 30 August, eight of our Year 7 Indigenous students had the opportunity to participate in the Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament in Townsville. They got a taste of what a real parliament sitting looked and sounded like, with lots of \u201cHere, Here\u201ds filling the air. Debates and motions were geared towards sustainability and the recognition of prominent Indigenous Australians and the contributions they have made to our nation. The girls met with Hon. Curtis Pitt, the Speaker of Queensland Parliament, and shared with him some of their stories about home, as well as the issues that matter to them, such as pollution and the need for more schooling options throughout the Torres Strait.<\/p>\n

This week one of our two Year 7\/8 debate teams won their third debate in a row and are now through to the semi-finals. The students \u2013 Jade De Lange, Emer Friel and Hayley Rush – convinced the adjudicator and audience \u2018that primary school students should only be allowed to use the internet for school work\u2019. We congratulate both teams on their hard work, and wish St Patrick\u2019s 1 all the best for their next debate which will be held early next term.<\/p>\n
