FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

It is with great pleasure that I announce to the St Patrick’s College Townsville Community today that the new Chair of the College Board of Governance will be Ms Josephine Gabrielli.

Josie will bring to this very important role an understanding of the Mercy ethos and tradition, and a genuine commitment to the College mission and values which flows out of her deep spirituality.

Josie demonstrates considerable knowledge and skills across a wide arena of experience including governance frameworks, financial literacy and risk assessment. She demonstrates a broad knowledge and highly developed skills in property, construction  and project management and is highly respected in that field.

In addition Josie is a health care professional with a positive outlook and good interpersonal skills. She is a highly skilled operator with leadership experience.

I congratulate Josie on her appointment to the role of Chair of the Board and wish her every success as she takes up the role on July 1. I have every confidence that the College will be in good and safe hands with Josie at the helm.

FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

It has now been approximately half a term since my arrival at St Patrick’s College Townsville and I can say categorically how impressed I have been both by our students and the vast array of activities and interactions I have witnessed since my start. I was particularly uplifted by the spirit of last Friday evening’s Year 11 Trivia Night, which provided an opportunity for social interconnection between St Patrick’s College Townsville, St Margaret Mary’s College and Ignatius Park College students. It was so very gratifying to see the volume of staff who turned out to support such an activity, along side a very animated group of students all vying for top spot.

We are absolutely committed to ensuring a well-rounded and holistic education and events like the Trivia Night, alongside the very successful Rowing Regatta, Hydrogen Grand Prix and the Combined Schools’ Musical, speak to this commitment. Having seen our musicians in rehearsal for the upcoming WE WILL ROCK YOU extravaganza, I would urge families to ensure they have secured tickets for the performances located at the Civic Theatre, taking place on the evening of Friday 6 June or the afternoon & evening of Saturday 7 June. I sincerely thank all of our staff who have supported rehearsals and logistics for this event – their dedication and talent is a great gift to the College. SUBJECT SELECTION AND PATHWAY PREPARATION

Shortly, students across Year 7, 9 and 10 will be making subject selections for 2026. The capacity to make subject choices is a way of providing students with some control over their own education and educational outcomes. Our advice as a College is that students should select subjects that they enjoy and have a demonstrated capacity. Further to that, students wishing to study a subject into Year 11 and 12, would also choose that subject in Years 8, 9 and 10, building their proficiency in the Middle Years. To facilitate student thinking about long term aspirations, the College hosted a Careers Expo that provided an opportunity for students to connect with industry providers, including tertiary providers, engaging in meaningful investigation around post school possibilities, requirements and cut-offs. Further, our students in Year 9 and 10 attended an information session to allow them to better understand pathway possibilities in Senior, outlining QCE requirements, as well as ATAR and Selection Rank possibilities. May I take this opportunity to sincerely than Ms Camille Flores, our Dean of Pathways, for her steadfast support of our students. Research shows that students who engage constructively in post school planning, generally work with greater purpose and higher outcomes, whilst at school. We are certainly keen to ensure that each of our young women are set up for success, not only while they are inside our gates, but long after they leave.

ASSESSMENT

I know we are now deeply in the midst of the assessment period for many year levels, and I take this opportunity to wish all our students the very best in relation to upcoming examinations and assignments.

As I write this article, I am particularly mindful that this time of year is an important period also for our Year 11 and 12 students. During this assessment period, many of our Year 11 students will be completing Unit 1 assessment. I remind Year 11 parents and students that the first QCE point for each General or Applied subject, comes with satisfactory completion of Unit 1 assessment. Where students have not achieved a ‘satisfactory’ result, the College will make contact to discuss implications and next steps. Year 12 students completing General Subjects should, by now, be in the midst of their final internal piece of assessment. I met with students last week to remind them of the importance of remaining focussed, and continuing to strive for their best possible mark. In particular, I have encouraged them to ensure they are mindful of the feedback they received from previous assessment, to grow their results this time around. I would remind Year 12 students and parents that there should also be an apportioning of time to dedicated revision in preparation for upcoming Mocks and External Examinations. Taking a longitudinal  approach is far preferable to cramming. I would further ask parents of Year 12 students to be mindful about the volume of hours students might be spending in paid employment. As we come closer to the external exams, I would ask Year 12 students and parents to ensure appropriate balance is in place, so that students have the time to prioritise their education and wellbeing, without abandoning their work commitments altogether. Where we currently have Year 12 students at risk of not achieving QCE, the College will once again, make contact to provide support and advice.

120 YEAR CELEBRATIONS

In Week 5 of this term, I had the great delight of meeting many of the Sisters of Mercy, all of whom have a strong connection to St Patrick’s College Townsville; some as both students, teachers and boarding staff. The work that the Sister’s began so many years ago lives now in the teaching mission of the lay community. The 120th Anniversary represents an opportunity to celebrate this wonderful legacy. I warmly invite all in our community to attend one of the anniversary events planned to celebrate the occasion. I would again encourage members of the community, current and past pupils alike, to book tickets to the 120 Year Gala Dinner as soon as possible. This will greatly assist in the organisation and planning.

As we move through Term 2, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many meaningful events and experiences we’ve shared so far.

This term, we commemorated ANZAC Day with deep respect and reflection, honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who served. We also celebrated the Interhouse Cross Country, Year 11 Pastoral Event, and National Reconciliation Week—each one a powerful reminder of the strength of our community. Your participation, enthusiasm, and teamwork made these events truly special.

VALUES FOCUS

As we continue the term, let’s recommit to our College values of Integrity and Joy. These values guide us toward a holistic education that prioritises both academic excellence and emotional wellbeing. Small choices — like arriving on time, wearing the correct uniform, and supporting one another — help build a stronger, more respectful community.

PASTORAL CARE

Please remember that our doors are always open. Whether you’re navigating academic pressure or personal challenges, support is available. Reach out to your Pastoral Leader, PC Teacher, or the Student Wellbeing Team — we’re here to help.

LOOKING AHEAD

Some exciting events are just around the corner:

  • Interhouse Athletics Carnival – May 16
    • Please remember to bring your sport hat, water bottle and wear closed-in shoes for all events.
  • School Camp (Years 7–11) – June 23–25

Our annual Year 11 Combined Schools’ Trivia Night was a fantastic celebration of connection and community. Hosted at St Patrick’s College Townsville, the evening saw more than 130 students from St Patrick’s College Townsville, St Margaret Mary’s College, and Ignatius Park College come together for a night of friendly competition, fun, and new friendships. From spirited trivia rounds to a lively basketball shootout, the event was filled with laughter and energy as students enjoyed the opportunity to engage with other Year 11 students in the community. Events like this are a valuable part of our pastoral program, encouraging belonging and strengthening relationships beyond the classroom. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated staff who helped organise, supervise, and bring the night to life for our students.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

As we move towards the mid-year holidays, there are many activities organised around Townsville.

  • NQ Holidays provide exclusive Defence discounts on accommodation and tours by booking various hotels, apartments and tours located throughout Queensland and Australia at exclusive rates. https://defenceholidaysnq.com.au/

Most of the activities require bookings, so make sure you regularly check Eventbrite & What’s On Townsville as the activities fill up very quickly.

SUPPORT SERVICES – Absence from Home Support

As you are aware, there has been an increased presence of military personnel in Townsville across air, sea, and land operations. This is due to the military exercises such as Exercise Warfighter and in the near future, Exercise Talisman Sabre.

As part of Defence life, time apart due to deployment, training, or other service requirements is common for Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families. While these absences are temporary, they often bring a range of emotional, financial, and practical challenges as families adjust to daily life without a parent or caregiver at home.

I encourage you to:

  • Provide opportunities for students to express their feelings — there may be a very good reason behind their behaviour.
  • Support them with activities that build coping skills and resilience.
  • Be mindful that emotions may fluctuate, including feelings of fear, loneliness, anxiety, frustration, or anticipation.
  • Remember that the upcoming school holidays may also feel different for students with a parent away.
  • Write a diary or a letter for the absent parent for their return.

SUPPORT SERVICES – Moving with Kids

In Term 2, we welcome new families to our College but we also are notified of possible moves for the next posting cycle. Moving is a major life change, and children may face challenges as they leave behind friends and familiar places and activities. To make the process more manageable for children and to help them become more positive and self-reliant, communicating truthfully and openly is important to help them understand and cope with the change. This will allow the children to feel empowered, valued, and make them feel part of the process.

EDUCATION ASSISTANCE SCHEME

As a timely reminder, don’t forget, within the first 18 months of starting at a new school, you are also entitled to tutoring reimbursement to overcome the immediate difficulties caused by changing schools. For more information about this program:

If you will be absent for a period of time during the term due to deployment/exercises or would like further information about the services provided, please feel free to contact the Defence School Mentor, Ms Gayle Walkom via gwalkom@stpatscollege.qld.edu.au or phone (07) 4753 0300.

This term, the Library has come alive with interactive displays curated in collaboration with students. In particular, the ANZAC, National Reconciliation Week and Read It, Rate It, Review It displays have sparked curiosity, conversation and reflection amongst students across the school. Year 7 and 8 Reading classes were transformed into Book Cafés, allowing students to explore new titles and participate in meaningful literary conversations. Humanities and Science classes have also gained valuable insight and skills from research and referencing sessions.

Lunchtime clubs are in full swing, Craft Club and Politics Club continue to thrive with Ms Walkom and Ms Chapman. The Library Club have mastered the art of shelving with Ms Webb and have taken on an exciting new project. Students have been labelling our fiction series to make it easier for readers to find their next great read. Meanwhile, the Readers’ Cup teams have been busily preparing for the upcoming North Queensland Competition.
