END OF TERM 2 REFLECTIONS AND WELL WISHES

The conclusion of this term offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the achievements and collective efforts that have shaped the school’s journey over the past months. I wish to extend my thanks to staff and students for their commitment both to their studies, as well as to the myriad extra-curricular activities they have taken on over the last couple of months. It has indeed been a busy term, with events ranging from the Careers Expo, 120 Year Celebrations, Athletics Carnival, Combined Schools’ Musical, Rowing Regattas, Year Level Trivia Nights, to the Football and Netball fixtures. May I take this opportunity to acknowledge the training and efforts to date of our Confraternity team, wishing students and teachers alike, all the very best for their competition in Rockhampton next week. I eagerly await the outcome of our first engagement in the Confraternity competition, and I thank the Mater Hospital for its sponsorship of our teams, acknowledged at our Jersey Ceremony on the last evening of term.

As I write this article, I recognise the tremendous undertaking that has occurred in the College’s camp program – an event which saw the coordination of more than 650 students in outdoor activities, leadership challenges, and moments of personal and group reflection. I was fortunate enough to participate, albeit briefly, in the Year 12 and Year 9 programs, and I was delighted by the engagement of our young people. I was particularly impressed by our students who came out of their comfort zones to undertake the high ropes and abseiling challenges. Opportunities like these speak to our commitment to develop strong women of courage. I wish to thank students for the wholehearted participation in these programs, as well as the staff who spent nights in tents or dorms, supporting our students in growing resilience in an unfamiliar setting. I also wish to thank those staff who were involved in the organisation of the camp program, acknowledging in particular the work of Ms Tenille Hambly, and the Heads of House and Year. On return to the College in Term 3, our intention is to do a review of our camp program, gathering student and staff feedback to inform our planning for 2026 and beyond.

STAFFING

A little while ago now, the College distributed communication to announce a change in the leadership of the College Board, with Sr Helen Mary Peters moving on from her service to the Board after a period of 9 years, 7½ as Board Chair. At this time, I acknowledge the significance of Sr Helen Mary Peter’s service and contribution, not only as a Board Chair, but as a Sister of Mercy, and an enduring presence in College life, most recently at our end of term Year Level Dance Off. Anyone who has met Sr Helen Mary understands that she has brought to her roles a steadfast love for St Patrick’s College Townsville and service more broadly, and that she balances a pragmatic outlook with a Mercy heart. We welcome to the role of Board Chair, Ms Josephine Gabrielli, currently our Board Deputy Chair. Josie brings a wealth of experience to this role, and we look forward to her leadership.

I also wish to acknowledge the contribution and service of Mr Cameran Triffett, our College Deputy Principal. Cameran is to take a period of leave over the next six months, for the purposes of professional development and study. Cameran has played an invaluable role in College life over a period of more than 9 years, performing across roles, most recently as College Principal. I thank Cameran for his considerable contributions to the life of our College in a period of tremendous growth and improvement, as well as for his professionalism, wisdom, commitment to our Mercy charism and joy. It is much needed in our profession. As previously advised, Ms Kristen Armitage will perform the role of Acting Deputy Principal for the remainder of the year, and Ms Tenille Hambly will step into the role of Acting Director of Students.

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS AND REMINDERS

While I appreciate we are heading into a holiday period, I would ask students and parents to re-engage with some of our policies and processes, as advertised in the College Diary and on the Learning Hub and website. In particular, I draw attention to our Uniform Policy, which requires:

  • No ear jewellery beyond a single earring
  • No nose rings or body piercings
  • No outlandish hair colours
  • No eyelash extensions
  • No make up
  • Skirts at knee length

Wearing of the uniform with pride (and without the accompaniments of the items listed above), is an important sign of commitment and belonging to this College. It also allows us to minimise unnecessary distractions. Parental assistance in this regard, is asked for.

REPORTS, ACADEMIC FEEDBACK AND GOALS

Today, parents are able to access reports from the Learning Hub Parent Lounge. These reports, together with teacher feedback on individual assessment instruments, should be part of the reflection process that guides consideration of Semester Two goals, upon return. I would ask students to reflect on what has gone well, and areas where, with renewed application or strategy, they could grow their academic outcomes. Beyond this, I encourage all students to take time to rest, recharge, and reconnect with family and friends. For those travelling, including our Boarders, I wish you a safe journey.

I am looking forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3, refreshed and ready for new opportunities. Until then, may God’s blessings be with all members of the St Patrick’s College Townsville community.

Appointments will continue into Term 3, and I warmly invite students who haven’t yet had an interview – or who would like a follow-up discussion – to book a time with me. I look forward to supporting them as they take their next steps beyond school.

YEAR 10 SET PLAN INTERVIEWS – Term 3, Week 1

We are pleased to announce that Year 10 SET Plan Interviews will be held in Week 1 of Term 3. These sessions play a key role in helping students make informed choices about their senior subjects and future pathways as they prepare for Year 11 in 2025.

CAMP WEEK

CAMP WEEK

What a week it’s been! Our students from Years 7 to 12 have been scattered across some of North Queensland’s most stunning locations, diving into outdoor adventures, building resilience, and embracing every challenge with courage and spirit; an incredible week of growth, connection and adventure for all!

Thank you to our incredible staff for supporting the students this week. Photos will be available on the Learning Hub next week.

YEAR 7 – Mungalli Falls, Milla Milla

Down at Mungalli Falls, our energetic Year 7s tackled obstacle courses, low ropes, art sessions, archery and more. It was non-stop action – and we’re so proud of the heart and determination this group has shown!

YEAR 8 – Echo Creek Adventure Centre, Munro Plains

Despite arriving to rain and mud, our Year 8s at Echo Creek didn’t miss a beat. The camp offered a wide range of activities that encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones and build resilience, independence, and self-confidence. From archery and abseiling to challenge courses, healing pond walks and team-building sessions, each activity provided an opportunity for students to discover their strengths, form deeper connections with their peers, and gain new perspectives. It was a rewarding experience filled with laughter, learning, and personal growth.

YEAR 9 – Camp Gedling, Hervey’s Range

Our Year 9 students had an incredible time camping in tents and embracing the great outdoors. They faced their fears with abseiling, navigated the trails on mountain bikes, and challenged themselves on the high ropes course. The fun didn’t stop there – they also honed their archery skills, participated in an amazing race orienteering activity, and engaged in fantastic team-building exercises.

This camp was a wonderful opportunity for the students to develop their confidence, resilience, and teamwork, all while creating unforgettable memories. We couldn’t be prouder of their enthusiasm and spirit throughout the adventure.

YEAR 10 – Genazzano Retreat, Lake Tinaroo

Year 10 had a wonderful time at Genazzano Retreat. Set in a stunning outdoor environment, the students took part in a range of team-building activities including kayaking on the lake, raft building, an outdoor escape room, and various challenge and initiative tasks. Working together in their House groups, the girls developed their leadership skills and strengthened their sense of teamwork, all while embracing our Mercy value of compassion. It was a great opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones and support one another in a fun and engaging setting.

YEAR 11 – Apex Camps, Magnetic Island

Our Year 11 students recently enjoyed an action-packed and meaningful camp experience at Apex Camps on Magnetic Island. Across the three days, they took part in a wide range of activities designed to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and grow their leadership potential. From raft building and bushwalking to beach games, radio rogaine, and leadership workshops, the students pushed themselves and supported each other through every challenge. One of the most special moments was the liturgy, which offered a quiet space for reflection on the College’s Mercy heritage and the legacy of leadership shown by the Sisters of Mercy. The camp was a great balance of personal growth, connection, and fun in the beautiful island setting.

YEAR 12 – Big Crystal Creek & The Strand

Our recent two-day Year 12 Retreat provided students with a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect on their journey so far. Across a range of activities, they strengthened friendships, developed leadership skills, built resilience, and began looking ahead to life beyond school.

From swimming at Big Crystal Creek and a beachside liturgy, to a night in the College Auditorium with heartfelt letters from parents and guardians, and an energetic Amazing Race, the retreat was filled with memorable moments. It was a powerful experience that encouraged self-reflection, future planning, and deeper connection with others.

YEAR 10 HOSPITALITY

YEAR 10 HOSPITALITY

This term, our Year 10 Hospitality students dove into the world of meal kits with a hands-on unit inspired by HelloFresh! Students learnt how to follow industry-standard recipe cards, manage time effectively in the kitchen, and prepare nutritious, restaurant-quality meals using fresh ingredients. The unit not only built essential cooking and plating skills but also gave students a taste of real-world food trends and the importance of sustainability in the kitchen. Bon appétit!

JCU LEGAL STUDIES CONFERENCE

JCU LEGAL STUDIES CONFERENCE

LEGAL STUDIES STUDENTS EXPLORE THE LAW IN ACTION

Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students had an inspiring and enriching experience at the recent JCU Legal Studies Conference. Throughout the day, students heard first-hand from legal professionals, deepening their understanding of the justice system and the real-world issues it tackles – from youth justice to human rights.

The conference offered valuable insights into future study and career pathways in the legal field, helping students make meaningful connections between their classroom learning and the broader community. It was a day of relevant discussion, thought-provoking ideas, and a glimpse into the possibilities that lie ahead for our budding legal minds.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD)

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy.

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal.

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the College.

120 YEAR CELEBRATIONS

120 YEAR CELEBRATIONS

We officially kicked off our 120 Year Celebrations with a Welcome Drinks & Campus Tour on Friday 13 June. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces return — some for the first time in decades! With new buildings, incredible staff, and a proud alumni community, it was the perfect way to launch this special series of events.

The celebrations continued on Saturday 14 June, as we gathered in style to honour 120 incredible years of the College at a Gala Dinner. It was a truly unforgettable evening, filled with laughter, cherished memories, music, and heartfelt connection. A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the legacy and bright future of our community.

On Sunday 15 June, following Mass at St Joseph’s Church, guests enjoyed a beautiful High Tea to round out the weekend of festivities. It was heartwarming to see generations come together — past and present students, dedicated staff, and our beloved Sisters of Mercy. The Alumni Choir, led by John Goulter and accompanied by Jenny Hall, filled the room with music that made the morning even more special. ‘Dancing Queen’ was a particular highlight, and had the room singing.

At the heart of this extraordinary weekend was friendship — the kind that lasts a lifetime. The enduring bond between our students, their lifelong friends, and the Sisters is something truly unique and deeply cherished. This is a community like no other, and these celebrations will remain close to our hearts for many years to come.
