SPC Trainees

Our Year 12 St Patrick’s College Health school-based Trainees have had a busy year completing their final year of schooling as well as their traineeship requirements at Mater Health Services, Townsville. On the school holidays, both students were able to gain exposure in their home communities working at Gidgee Healing Health Centre where they completed general administration tasks, health assistant work and shadowing of Nurses and Health Staff.

Thank you to Mater Health Services and Gidgee Healing for your commitment in working towards broadening their skills, knowledge and abilities in the health industry.

Curious Minds Program

Congratulations to Year 9 student, Indigo Wedel, who has been accepted into the Curious Minds Program for 2019/20. Curious Minds is a six month program that combines two residential camps and a STEM coaching program that enables girls to explore all aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths. The coaching program will see each student matched with a female coach recruited from a variety of STEM backgrounds and together they will construct personal goals for the student. This might include discussing study options and career pathways, undertaking further extension work with support from their coach, developing ideas based on learnings from the camp or working on a project. Indigo is excited to be apart of the program and hopes it will inspire her future career choices in the STEM Field.

Young, Black & Proud Scholarships

Earlier this year, all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students were encouraged to apply for the 2019 Young, Black and Proud Scholarship. This scholarship provides funding of up to $2000 to support students in their sporting, arts or academic pursuits. The College was proud to announce that out of over 500 applicants statewide, two of our students were selected as recipients. Congratulations to Flora Nona (Year 9) and Lilly Trevor (Year 7).

PNG Independence Day Assembly

On Wednesday the 18 September, the College celebrated our annual Papua New Guinea Independence Day assembly. This assembly was created by our PNG students to showcase their culture, heritage, and home. We got to experience traditional PNG dances and songs, as well as learning more about PNG itself. It is a highlight every year, and the whole College even danced a two-step together.

QATSIF Young Leaders Award

The QATSIF Young Leaders Award aims to recognise outstanding leadership from a Year 11 or 12 QATSIF student who is role model and leader within their school community.

QATSIF or the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation’s motto is “Building Tomorrow’s Leaders”. Over the past 11 years, QATSIF has provided over 8,700 educational scholarships to support and encourage Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to complete their senior studies and successfully move into tertiary studies, apprenticeships, traineeships or employment.

We currently have a number of students at St Patrick’s College receiving these scholarships.

The award recipient has consistently met QATSIF’s strict Student Eligibility Criteria each semester, and has been involved in various academic, extra-curricular, sporting and community events.

On behalf of QATSIF and St Patrick’s College, I would like to congratulate Ella Evans on receiving the 2019 QATSIF Young Indigenous Leader Award.
