TCLC Colour Run

A number of boarding students kindly volunteered their time at TCLC’s Colour Run. The girls had a fantastic time meeting their SONY Camp companions and are excited for the weekend to follow.

North Queensland Region Schools Constitutional Convention

On Friday 13 September, Jorja Warde and Eliza Millard attended the North Queensland Region Schools Constitutional Convention at JCU, city campus.  Jorja was our school delegate who presented an argument on the topic of ‘the referendum process is not effective or efficient and should be replaced with a constitutional commission’. The girls enjoyed learning more about the constitution from guest speakers from the law department at JCU and had the opportunity to engage in lively discussion with students from other schools. The day was very informative and the girls enjoyed developing their awareness of the impacts of the Constitution on everyday life.

Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament

On Friday 30 August, eight of our Year 7 Indigenous students had the opportunity to participate in the Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament in Townsville. They got a taste of what a real parliament sitting looked and sounded like, with lots of “Here, Here”s filling the air. Debates and motions were geared towards sustainability and the recognition of prominent Indigenous Australians and the contributions they have made to our nation. The girls met with Hon. Curtis Pitt, the Speaker of Queensland Parliament, and shared with him some of their stories about home, as well as the issues that matter to them, such as pollution and the need for more schooling options throughout the Torres Strait.

Debating News

This week one of our two Year 7/8 debate teams won their third debate in a row and are now through to the semi-finals. The students – Jade De Lange, Emer Friel and Hayley Rush – convinced the adjudicator and audience ‘that primary school students should only be allowed to use the internet for school work’. We congratulate both teams on their hard work, and wish St Patrick’s 1 all the best for their next debate which will be held early next term.
