After a hugely successful Book Week, I am pleased to announce the winners of two of our Book Week competitions.  Congratulations to Eliza Carter in Year 7 whose ‘spine poem’ entry was voted the winner and to Maddison Warren in Year 10 who wrote an especially ‘intriguing first line’.  Their winning entries can be viewed below.  These ladies each win a $20 gift voucher to Mary Who Bookshop.  A big thank you to all who participated and all who voted.

Since then, we have been busy celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day with an influx of fabulous new fiction books and poetry collections, including several written by young Indigenous authors.  Students participated in an Indigenous Language quiz, exposing them to a range of Indigenous words and their origins, and had the opportunity to listen to recordings of stories told in Indigenous languages.  Additionally, we have celebrated the ever-favourite Roald Dahl’s birthday, as well as R U Okay Day.  We are looking forward to yet more themed displays and activities in Term 4.

I am also keen to advise you of another incredibly useful addition to our resources that will assist students in their research and inquiry endeavours.  Students now have access to a curated list of subject specific links to websites that have been vetted for accuracy, relevancy and authority.  These links provide a great starting point for research tasks, directing students to valid and useful information.  Simply open up the Library homepage and select the relevant subject tab for access to these links.  As always, I am ready and able to assist students with any of their research tasks.

Book Week ‘Spine Poetry’

By Eliza Carter, Year 7

1 for sorrow 2 for joy

Caught in the headlights

About a boy

Girl running, boy falling

Walk in my shoes

Look through my eyes

All the light we cannot see

Never fades …

Because of you

Book Week ‘Intriguing First Line’

By Maddison Warren, Year 10

“No matter where I go, there is tugging on my clothes, phantom arms practically dragging me to the ground…”

Book of the Week – Lori by John Wilson

The story of Lori’s turbulent life growing up in the canefields of North Queensland is a challenging, yet inspirational read. Set in the 1960s and based on a true story, it is a powerful testament to the extraordinary courage and resilience of the young.  Available now from the Library.
