Pastoral Care

At our College, our Pastoral Care Team is committed to taking a proactive approach in developing skills that build resilience, promoting a school culture that emphasises respect, teamwork and participation – and reactive elements like providing comfort in response to hurt, or encouragement in the face of disappointment. We all seek to support your daughter in developing a strong skill set to draw upon as she navigates through life.

The purpose of Pastoral Care at our College is to:

  • Create a safe, secure and supportive environment for learning to be priority,

  • Create a sense of belonging through team building activities, such as working together on community service projects,

  • Develop skills and knowledge through personal development and targeted workshops in order to prevent or address specific problems such as bullying,

  • Track and monitor individual student progress enabling early intervention in identifying and dealing with specific needs,

  • Celebrate student achievement and contributions to the College and wider community,

  • Provide guidance regarding study patterns, peer relationships, post-school pathways and opportunities, and

  • Provide access to passionate and dedicated teachers who are good role models.

Pastoral care is most effective when there is a strong partnership between home and school. Clear two-way communication, reminders and reinforcement (at home and at school) of strategies to support progress, and early intervention in identifying and addressing problems are vital to the effective exercise of pastoral care.

The College uses the strong focus on building positive and connected relationships with others. A national focus on safety is highlighted each year during ‘National Child Protection Week’ which starts on Fathers’ Day (1 September 2019). This week provides an opportunity for government, business and the community to come together to promote the safety and wellbeing of children across all environments. The College has a range of policies and procedures available on our website in relation to respectful relationships and child safety.

The College Student Protection Officers are:

  • College Principal: Ms Paulina Skerman

  • Deputy Principal: Ms Amber Hauff

  • College Counsellor: Ms Courtney Zagami

All College staff are training annually to support students in developing strong, safe and connected relationships.

Safe drop off and collection of students

Recently we have received some concerns about choices being made by drivers in The Strand pick up and drop off zone and would like to reiterate the following guidelines:

  • Please do not park over the crossing to drop off or pick up children as this is dangerous and illegal.
  • Please use this zone to do a quick drop-off or pick-up to allow for the traffic flow to continue.
  • If no parks are available please use the roundabout at Oxley Street and return via the roundabout at Fryer Street to loop until a park becomes available.

Other possible options to consider might be:

  • Waiting until after 3.30pm to collect your daughters when the traffic from St Joseph’s North Ward has also dissipated, or
  • Meet your daughters further down the Strand to avoid the congestion all together.

Thank you for your help in ensuring the safety of all of our community.
