Message from the Headmaster

Message from the Headmaster

Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?

James 2:17 (The Message Bible Translation)

Dear Students, Parents and Carers

It has been lovely to welcome back our students and staff and see them commence the annual rhythm of the year. Our return has however been difficult for all, given the tragic death of Charlie McGuiness, a Robson House Boarder who would have been in Year 9 this year. Naturally his parents and siblings are devastated and we have cared for them as best we can, knowing that there is nothing we can do to effectively ease their pain. Mr and Mrs McGuiness have allowed me to share that it was a terrible Side-by-Side vehicle accident.

The wonderful support given to the family, and indeed to other people who are grieving, by our boys, staff and parents is deeply appreciated by the family. Our boys have provided the McGuiness family with the love of the Shore community, and allowed them respect and dignity. Thank you very much to the large number of boys, parents and staff who attended the Memorial Service and thank you especially to the boys for their impeccable behaviour and uniform, and consideration for adults at the service. Estimates of those who were present range from 1,000 – 1,500 people, with many travelling a considerable distance to attend. Our counselling staff and Housemasters have been wonderful in serving the needs of our boys with their own personal bereavement. Currently, discussion is underway as to how to provide a fitting memory of Charlie on our campus.

Academic Results

At the beginning of 2024, we were able to announce that the results of the previous Year 12 were the best in the School’s history. Now, at the beginning of the 2025 school year, we are able to say that last year’s Year 12 students surpassed even this very high mark. Bearing in mind we are a comprehensive school, the results are simply extraordinary.

  • 105 of our students gained an ATAR above 90, that is, 50% of our students were in the top 10% of available results in the State and, indeed, the nation.
  • Within this statistic, 20 students, that is 10% of our candidature, gained an ATAR above 99, that is in the top 1% of available results.
  • Seven students gained an ATAR above 99.9, by definition in the top 0.1%.
  • Two students, Michael Kwak and Alan Li achieved the highest possible ATAR of 99.95, placing them equal first, along with many others, in Australia.
  • The average ATAR score within our candidature was 91.83, effectively equal (we could call it a rounding error) with the 91.90 achieved by their predecessors.
  • In all other metrics, 2024 Year 12 performed even better than their 2023 predecessors.
  • The story of success continues in many other ways. Two of our students came first in NSW in particular subjects, Nathanial Robertson in Drama and Angus Baker in PDHPE.
  • In fact, in Personal Development / Health / Physical Education, Shore students occupied three of the top ten places in all of NSW across schools of all sectors and systems.
  • 159 of our students had ATARs above 80.
  • No one received an ATAR below 50, 50 being the average possible ATAR attainable.

While not all of our students featured in the most laudable statistics above, many overcame considerable disadvantages, whether academic or social, to achieve personal bests and perform really well on their own terms. We are proud of them all.

Magnificent results such as these simply can’t occur without splendid teaching. The incredible successes of last year’s HSC cohort are the boys themselves, who in the main worked very hard, and also of our staff, teaching and professional and operational, who gave above and beyond to the boys. Our partnership with parents and carers has been the other necessary ingredient of their success.

When we combine these results with other academic indicators such as NAPLAN, as well as the wonderful cultural achievements last year, for instance in Music, Drama and Debating, and the fabulous sporting results throughout the year, it can truly be said that Shore is flying! One individual instance is at the end of Term 4, Ethan Zhang, 8EW placed 7th in the National Robotics Competition, and Brian Xu, 8EY, and his team were placed amongst the highest in their National Skills ranking and, as such, both boys have been selected to represent Australia at the World Championships in Dallas, Texas in May.

Growth at Shore

Some of our community may have been taken aback by the criticism of Shore in the media during the holidays for its alleged intention to increase the size of the School by 450 students. In fact, this is leveraging old news. The development application which granted Shore permission to accommodate an extra 450 students at Shore was granted 13 years ago! In order to effect a slight increase, we had to again use this development application to gain permission at State level. Our current plan is for a very slight increase of the order of around 30 students between Kindergarten and Year 12 across both our North Sydney and Northbridge campuses. Shore has no current intention to expand the School substantially. While I cannot commit the School beyond my Headship, it is clear that there is no appetite at School Council to ‘go big’. We wish to maintain the School of a size to facilitate strong pastoral connections. We lack the infrastructure to effect a substantial student increase, even if the School wished to do so.

North Sydney Council and the local resident action group are aware of the limited nature of our plans.

Service Learning

Towards the end of last year, our students were very active under the leadership of Mr Huw Blood (Head of Service Learning) in serving our community. The report I received is in extract below:

  • Hundreds of meals were made and served to vulnerable people through Kids Giving Back.
  • Thread Together was able to organise, collate and sort significant amounts of clothing for distribution to vulnerable communities.
  • Hundreds of lunch meals were made, prepared, and served to vulnerable people through the Surry Hills Salvation Army depot.
  • Hundreds of hampers, goods and donated items were packed and organised for Anglicare in their warehouse.
  • Hundreds of new trees were planted across much of the Northern Beaches.
  • Students learned about The Big Issue, heard stories from lived experiences of patrons and learned much about societal disadvantage and homelessness.
  • Shore students were encouraged, supported, and mentored at the K,1,2 Northbridge Campus for a few days by our Senior students.
  • Shore students embraced working with disability at Broderick-Gillawarna School, assisting with dancing and music in their Speech Day Presentation.
  • A big group of elderly residents at Hunters Hill were engaged, loved, and cared for, by Shore students through games, music, and some refreshing of outdoor areas.
  • Over one tonne of collected food and toys were packed, boxed, and taken to the major Anglicare Warehouse in Villawood, as part of the Shore “Toys and Tucker” Appeal.
  • 100 care packs were created for a Christmas dinner, for Rough Edges patrons.
  • Dr Mansfield took a small group of students to the Salvation Army ‘Hope Dinner’ in which over 120 patrons were served, whilst listening to students Chris Griffiths and Felix Harrop sing/entertain.

It is very pleasing to observe that we are applying the prescription of the New Testament writer (and one of Jesus’ disciples) James.

14-17 Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense? James 2:14-17 (The Message Bible Translation)

Staffing

We have quite a small number of new permanent staff this year, for the very good reason that very few staff departed last year. This stability is very welcome. Some of those who are new are in fact on temporary contracts to fill maternity leave and long service leave vacancies. One of the significant long service leave positions is that of our Chaplain, Rev Anthony Benn, who will be returning from leave at the beginning of next term. Our Assistant Chaplain, Mr John Sheldon has stepped into the top role for this time and is being ordained as an Anglican Minister by the Archbishop in one week from now. We congratulate Mr Sheldon on his significant journey through teacher training and experience, theological study and now ordination.

Our Enrolments team has been strengthened by the appointment of Mrs Robyn Pedley as Director of Admissions. This work will complement the work done by Mrs Vickii Scott in Enrolments, as the Admissions portfolio will concentrate on the whole “customer journey” of parents from application through confirmation to commencement. Mrs Pedley is in her third school in this role, after significant success in the first two.

At the end of last year, our Acting Deputy Head Academic, Mr Matt Bentley, migrated, at least for the near future, to the United Arab Emirates, where his wife has been working through all of 2024. We have appointed Mr Andrew Holland as Acting Deputy Head for the next two years. This long tenure in an acting position is at the request of our Headmaster elect, Dr Peter Miller, as he would like to see the School in operation for 12 months after he assumes the leadership of the School at the beginning of 2026, prior to making major decisions on staffing. For this reason, Ms Lisette Atkinson will act as Head of Mathematics for the next two years in what is substantively Mr Holland’s position.

Our incoming Director of Boarding, Mr Daniel Bradford is serving out the remainder of his contract as Director of Boarding at St Stanislaus’ College, in Bathurst, and will commence at Shore next Term. In the meantime, Mr Werner Pienaar is acting in this role.

Already we are heading into mid-February and the year will fairly quickly get away from us all. My encouragement to the boys will be to use the time well.

It is nice to be back.

Dr John Collier
Headmaster

Chaplains’ Chat

Chaplains’ Chat

We all have favourite things that we love to do and eat, such as watching the cricket after eating Christmas leftovers, visiting the beach on a hot summer’s day, or going out with our favourite people. As the students return to School for another year of learning, this Term in Chapel, we will be hearing from different staff about their favourite Bible verses, what they teach us about God and how these verses encourage and comfort us in everyday life.

The Apostle Paul, writing to his younger protégé in his second letter to Timothy, reminds him that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” These verses demonstrate the educational heart of God, that like a schoolmaster, He both instructs and disciplines for the growth and maturity of His children. Why? So that we might be equipped for every good work. It is our desire that the young men of Shore would be thoroughly equipped with the character and conviction to strive for the good of others and multiply the good in society. May this new school year be a time of great learning, friendships and maturity as we strive for excellence in all that we do.

Mr John Sheldon
Chaplain (Acting)

Enhancements to ‘Lampada’ Portal

Enhancements to ‘Lampada’ Portal

In response to valuable feedback from the Community Engagement Parent Survey last year, Shore has introduced an array of improvements to the ‘Lampada’ portal, aimed at enhancing accessibility and usability for parents and carers. The updates were inspired by the survey’s insights, and we appreciate the active role of parents in this enhancement journey.

Key changes include:

– Streamlined Navigation: The portal’s most-used tools are now more accessible with a reorganised layout.

– Mobile-Friendly Design: An updated look ensures smooth navigation across mobile devices.

– Improved Search: With outdated content removed, finding essential information is now faster and easier.

– Categorised News: News is now organised by topic, offering quicker access to relevant updates.

– Personalised Feeds: Parents will receive news tailored to their child’s Year Group and House.

– Integrated Calendars: Lampada syncs with the new Outlook School calendar for seamless event viewing.

– Weekly Wrap-Up: A custom news summary, emailed every Wednesday, keeps parents informed. This will not replace the Shore Weekly Record or Prep Peek.

For added support, a new ‘Help’ page addresses common questions about the platform’s features.

As parents explore the new platform, feedback is welcome through a simple thumbs-up/thumbs-down feature, open during the initial weeks.

Thank you for your ongoing input, which has been instrumental in creating a more responsive and helpful resource for our community.

A Warm Welcome: Shore Boarding

A Warm Welcome: Shore Boarding

The start of the School year is always an exciting time, but for our new Year 7 Boarders, it marks the beginning of a journey filled with new experiences, friendships, and opportunities. Over the past week, Shore’s Boarding community has embraced the newest members of School House, Barry House, Robson House, and Hodges House, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable transition into Boarding life.

Our Year 7s arrived with their families to unpack and settle into School House, ready to begin their adventure. The week was packed with activities, from friendly games of ping pong, billiards, and cards to energetic rugby practice on the lawn. Meals were a highlight, with the boys getting hands-on, cooking up BBQs and hearty dinners that brought everyone together. Robson House wasted no time getting into the spirit of Boarding life with a vibrant Mexican feast hosted by Ms Power, setting the tone for a weekend of fun. School House boys embraced the Shore Boarding tradition, kicking off their weekend with a cruise exploring the indigenous heritage of our harbour. Saturday was filled with Sport, followed by a movie night featuring Remember the Titans and a delicious dessert. Barry House welcomed new members at a relaxed movie night with pies and sausage rolls, and homemade butter pecan ice cream fresh from their own ice-cream maker, while Hodges House kicked off their year with a crowd-pleasing Friday Feed – tacos for all! The start of the year also brought a flurry of birthdays, with celebrations for Sid, Henry, Darcy, and Christian. As with all Houses, the highlight of the weekend was the Raging Waters excursion, where Boarders from across the School shared in the thrill of water slides and plenty of laughs – a fitting start to a year of adventure though with their Boarding families.

Adjusting to Boarding can be a daunting experience, but thanks to a welcoming community and a week packed with fun and friendship, our new Boarders are already settling into their new home away from home. With support from older students and housemates, they are quickly finding their place within the Shore family—ready to make lifelong mates and unforgettable memories.

Study Centre

Study Centre

Welcome to 2025 and Shore’s popular Study Centre. There are subject-specific sessions before and after school to allow the boys to seek individual help and guidance with their work. Teachers, sometimes assisted by high-achieving Old Boys, are available according to the published timetable. Most sessions are held in and around the Library, but check the timetable for locations. Study Centre operates on a drop-in basis, and there is no charge involved. All boys are strongly encouraged to attend.

Focus On is part of the Study Centre. It is run by staff in the Educational Services department who offer support to boys in all subjects in Years 7 to 10. They will assist the boys with their executive functioning skills as well as help with homework and other schoolwork.

Please note that the Study Centre timetable changes from time to time as teachers’ co-curricular commitments change. It is always best to check for the most up-to-date version of the timetable on Lampada.

Careers News

Careers News

“The future depends on what you do today.”
Mahatma Gandhi

We look forward to working with students and their families in 2025! Careers Education is an essential component of developing the whole person to ensure students graduate with the skills, knowledge and mindset to thrive during school and beyond.

A career is more than just a job;  it requires understanding oneself and the world’s needs so a positive contribution can be made. A meaningful career will ensure positive wellbeing and future success (just speak to any staff at Shore!).

The Careers support available to students and families includes:

  • Careers Lampada hosts an abundance of information on courses, gap years, calendar of events, scholarship information, overseas options and more.
  • Careers News will be posted in the News Section of Lampada and include upcoming deadlines, events, webinars and other information.
  • Appointments for one-on-one counselling can be made through the Careers Lampada page. We ensure each student in Year 11 and Year 12 has at least one consultation.
  • Lower North Shore Career Expo will be held on Monday 12 May.
  • Year 11 Careers Conversations event will take place at the end of Term 3.
  • Year 10 Morrisby profiling will take place during the Year 10 exam period in Term 2.
  • Year 10 Work Engagement is from 24 – 28 November.

From the Music Department

From the Music Department

Welcome back, and a warm welcome to all new students. Firstly, congratulations to Digby Wood, who attended the Gondwana National Choral School and performed at two concerts during the holidays. He was required to audition back in June. A wonderful achievement. Secondly, thank you to all the students who have auditioned for the Band Programme, String and Orchestra programme and Choir. It was really pleasing to see and hear so many students “having a go”. All music ensembles have started rehearsals this week. If you have missed one of the opportunities to audition for an ensemble, it is not too late. If you have any questions about ensembles, please come to the Music Department. The ensemble rehearsal schedule is below.

Mentors are Shore Old Boys, who have been enthusiastically involved and excelled in the Music programme over their time as students. They have returned to Shore to help assist in the development of the Core Music Ensembles. These Mentors are here to help guide the boys, assist in problem solving, instruct them on instrumental techniques and also develop their own leadership skills. Their assistance is greatly appreciated, and they are an invaluable and integral part of our Music programme.

Welcome back to Old Boy Music Mentors:

We also welcome:

CAR PARK FULL

The sign was out very early at Northbridge on Saturday morning as almost 70 eager young Year 7 cricketers donned the Shore whites for the first time. With three games across two fields and six teams playing, they all enjoyed a beautiful morning at Shore’s home of cricket, the hallowed turf of Northbridge.

With such a high quality of cricketers across this large group, Shore Cricket is in good hands for the years to come. It’s an exciting time for them as they (and their parents!) start a six-year journey of Cricket at Shore, a great experience that boys in Year 12 will openly say are some of their fondest memories of school life.

Sideline conversations included meeting a new Boarder from Yass, who was so excited about the fact he had played cricket every day since he joined Shore… “Sir, can I go to the nets every day after school?” Sure mate, why not!

Cricket Wires

Huge congratulations to six of our First/Second XI squad on their recent selections in the 2024/25 Combined GPS teams. Toby Robinson has been named Captain, a huge honour and just reward for his outstanding leadership and commitment to Shore and GPS cricket over many years. He will be joined by Ben Hocking, Fraser Pandit and Tom Fuzes in the Opens team. Cooper Glanville has been named Vice Captain of the U15s GPS Chairman XI and joined by Thomas Capes. Both teams will be playing a number of games over the next month, and we wish them every success.

Technically speaking, the round was against Sydney Boys High School (SBHS), but it emerged that only one of our teams would play them, with the First XI having a resounding 10-wicket win away from home.

The Thirds had a full BBL style T20 with fielding restrictions, Power plays and the Power surge, resulting in a nailbiter and a 4-run win…to the Shore Third XI!

Was that Cameron Green or Tom Robson in the Gully for the Second XI taking a specky for the first wicket?

Was that Glen Maxwell or Teddy Turner in the 15B’s, Teddy hitting 5 x SIXERS on his way to a well-made 50n.o, scrambling a 2 off the last ball of the innings to raise his bat?

3 RUN OUTS in the First XI. How good are run outs, game changers!

Toby Smith (15A) scored a brilliant 90 on D-Ground. It should be called T-Ground after plundering so many runs there this season!

Tom Gray got a wicket on the first ball of the game to get the Fourths off to a fantastic start.

Tom Penney (16A) demolished the Newington team with an outstanding spell of 5-9.

With the first half of the season done and the second half well underway, a massive thank you to all the parents, supporters, and everyone who assists in supporting their sons’ cricket endeavours at Shore. It is greatly appreciated.

Cricket is such a great sport that allows your son to be part of a team in the beautiful outdoors, to be off their screens and out of the house for multiple hours, creating friendships and memories that will last forever.

FIRST XI Match Report

The resumption of the competition saw Shore travel to Centennial Park to take on SBHS. Finishing Term 4 with three straight wins, the team was determined to keep improving and maintain their momentum. Captain Toby Robinson called correctly and sent the hosts into bat. Oliver Higgins struck early, and SBHS was 1/7, but SBHS stabilised their innings, showing patience and resilience to put on a 60 run stand before a run out (Fraser Pandit) ended the partnership. Stian Constable (1/12 off 10 overs) and Toby Robinson (0/20 off 10 overs) then entered the attack and put the brakes on SBHS’s run rate, showing great control and skill. SBHS never recovered the momentum, and wickets fell steadily, seeing them bowled out for 128 in the 48th over. Ben Hocking (3/28 off 9 overs) was the only multiple wicket-taker, with Tom Fuzes, Oliver Higgins, Sam Walton and Stian Constable all contributing with a wicket each. A pleasing feature of the fielding innings was three run outs – a direct hit from Toby Robinson being the highlight. It was also great to see vice-captain Sam Walton return to the team following injury last Term.

After the innings break and a lovely lunch provided in the Pavilion, Shore’s openers Fraser Pandit and Dan Harvey set about chasing SBHS’s total of 128. They reached the victory target in the twenty fourth over and secured two valuable bonus points. Both were resolute in defence but punished anything loose. They have had several excellent partnerships this season and seem to be growing in confidence every game.

The bonus point victory sees Shore sitting second on the table, moving a little closer to competition leaders The King’s School. The team will host St Joseph’s College this Saturday at Northbridge in Round 9.

Golf Report

Saturday 1 February 2025

After a well-earned summer break, our golfers returned to competition this week, many having spent their holidays sharpening their skills on the course.

Our Matchplay team faced Waverley at North Ryde Golf Club, eager to continue the strong form we displayed in Term 4. Despite a slow round on a crowded course and conceding at least six shots to their opponents in every match, our players put in a dominant performance.

Our top seed, Luke Ellis, was in a strong position for much of his match but was unable to close out the win, ultimately halving his contest. Captain of Golf Harrison Graetz led by example with a commanding 6&5 victory, while Archie Frewin and Matthew Goddard secured wins of 5&4 and 7&6, respectively. This outstanding team performance extends our lead at the top of the table to eight points as we prepare for our next match against Newington.

Meanwhile, at Northbridge Golf Course, the remaining players contested the Monthly Medal strokeplay event. Zach France, Tom Gocher, and Lachlan Kwan also competed in the postponed final round of the Shore Strokeplay Championship, with Zach holding a four-shot lead heading into the round. While none of the players were at their best on the day, Zach successfully defended his title with a resounding 15-shot victory over Lachlan, with Tom finishing 3rd.

In the Monthly Medal event, Rob Kerr delivered the standout performance, shooting a net 65 to claim 3rd place in C Grade.

Shore Year 10 VIII’s Take Control of the Barwon River

In the days leading up to Australia Day, a squad of 36 rowers from the Shore Boat Club travelled south of the border to compete in the annual Barwon Regatta. This has been a mainstay on the rowing calendar for Shore over previous years as it gives the boys a great racing experience against the majority of the Victorian schools at the end of their training block.

This year, our crews were able to clean-sweep the Year 10 VIII categories with great wins in the Third, Second and First Year 10 races. It was also very pleasing to see our Fourth Year 10 crew win the C final of the Third Year 10 VIII category as well – a first win for many of these boys in their maiden rowing season.

The First Year 10 also qualified for the A final of the Under19 VIII as well, and in a very exciting race, they were able to take out the win over their rivals. A great race from a developing crew. Once the regatta was over, The Year 10 squad was awarded the “Jeff Watt” trophy, which is awarded to the school with the most wins in A finals – a first for the Shore at this regatta!!

GPS Squad Off to a Flyer in the First Regatta of the Racing Season

After a very short first week back at school, The GPS squad and the Year 10 VIII’s travelled out to Penrith to compete in what should be their “home field” regatta, the Shore Regatta!! This regatta saw all schools compete (apart from Sydney Boys High School due to their late start back at school) twice over the 2000m course.

I am very happy to report that the Shore crews had a very strong outing. Our Year 10 Squad were able to record four wins and four 2nd places from their eight starts, with strong performances coming from the middle of the programme, with the Second and Third Year 10 VIII claiming great wins in both their races.

Our Fourth Year 10 VIII recorded a great 2nd place, and our First Year 10 crew came up against a strong crew from Riverview. This is surely going to be a great division to watch over the next few weeks, as these crews are primed to battle it out!!

Our Senior Third VIII, under the guidance of new stroke seat Al Currie, thundered down the course and recorded two very strong 2nd places from their two starts. A great performance from a developing crew!

Our GPS IV+ had a very strong day at the regatta with strong performances across the board. The Fourth IV continued their impressive run of form with two very dominant wins (the first by a margin of 15 seconds), and our Third IV went almost just as well with two strong wins, both by double-digit margins (13 seconds and 11 seconds). This was all done under the watchful eye of Mr Garry Uebergang, who has returned to the shed in a coaching capacity along with recent Old Boy and current Olympian Mr Jackson Kench.

The GPS Second IV had a little harder time of it – recording a win in their first race by a good solid two seconds from a very spirited St Joseph’s crew to then have that margin flipped on them in the second race. Both these races saw a close tussle down the course, with only a small margin separating each crew for the 2000m.

The GPS First IV was the only crew on the day that had to contend against crews that were not traditional GPS rivals. St Augustine’s, as they have done in the past, competed in this category and were able to take out the first race, with the Shore crew coming in 2nd place just under a boat length behind and just under half a length in front of the Riverview crew. In the second round, it was Riverview and St Augustine’s that had an arm wrestle down the course, with the Shore boat sitting in 3rd place for the majority of the 2000m.

The GPS Second VIII raced next, and I am very pleased to say they knocked out two very pleasing victories by more than a boat length from their two starts. Both performances were characterised by a nice long rhythm that let the boat work for them and set up an emerging stern pair of Oli Paris and Ethan Nam.

The GPS First VIII closed out both rounds of racing in a very pleasing manner. In both their races, the Shore crew was able to lock down 2nd place behind a very impressive Riverview crew. On a very positive note, this was the first time this season that the crew had been able to piece together back-to-back performances, which will most certainly please the coaching staff.

Year 7 and 8 Nippers

It was another fantastic Saturday to start Term 1. With the new Year 7 Nippers getting involved with all things Shore Surf Live Saving at Long Reef.

The Nippers group competed in three events on Saturday in preparation for next week’s Shore Carnival. Boys were also put through a series of board paddle events, both individual and in teams, to identify paddling techniques and build skills and strength on the nipper boards.

Other than a few blue bottles, conditions were perfect for beginners both in and on the water. This current group of Year 7 and 8 students have shown skills in the water and on the sand and will be great additions to the Shore SLS team for next week’s Carnival.

Years 9 Intermediates

The Year 9 Intermediate group trained as a separate group on Saturday, competing in several events, including flags, beach sprint relay, board race and swim race. They were put through their paces by coaches and given specific tips to employ in Saturday’s Carnival. We are hoping that Knox, Barker and St Joseph’s bring a number of Year 9 and 10 students to the Carnival to make for a highly competitive morning of events for our Intermediate group.

Beyond the Carnivals, the Year 9 group will also be introduced to elements of their Bronze Medallion training course by Mr Nigel Scozzi over the course of Term 1 in preparation for the Bronze Medallion Award in Term 4 of this year.

Year 10, 11 and 12

The Senior group (Year 11 and 12) successfully completed their Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) Proficiency with Mrs Margaret Pearson, Long Reef Education Officer. We are very grateful to Mrs Pearson for her time and pleased that the boys are now fully up-to-date with their certificates for their weekly patrol.

The new Bronze Medallion holders in Year 10 will be given the opportunity to complete the ART Certificate later in Term 1.

In the meantime, on the beach, the boys competed in events all together and the Year 10 group managed to hold their own against some tough competition from the older boys.

Xavier Adamo, Ethan Adamo, Jackson Yeates and Charlie Martin gave up two days of their summer holidays to complete the course under the supervision of Long Reef SLS Club trainers. These boys will now perform an important function of their patrol team and can continue their training with a view to completing the IRB Driver’s Certificate in the near future. Well done boys!

Firsts Report

The Firsts tennis started the season strong with a 9-0 victory over Sydney Boys High School (SBHS). Going into the weekend trailing on the leader board, the boys bound together and played some clinical doubles to take a 3-0 lead. With no sets lost, the boys went into the singles confident and piled up six quality wins to clinch the day. Special mention to Oliver De Cock, who played his debut match in the firsts and displayed an impressive mental display to win despite being a set down and to Josh Powell for winning his singles 6-0 6-0. The team regained the top of the leaderboard and maintained their unbeaten record.

Shore Seconds tennis team had a great start to the second half of the season with a 9-0 win against SBHS. In the doubles, the new pairings Josh Cottee and Alex Yu had a strong win, dominating the game at the net. Taj Gupta and Anay Mishra Mall also held strong with a mighty serve-volley combination, closing the game out early in their first match as a pairing. Finally, Chris Hunter and Ralphie Fowler were victorious, winning the first set 6-0, showcasing control and limiting the opponent’s chances. In the singles, Josh Cottee and Ralphie Fowler set the tone, starting the first singles matches of the day with the intensity and determination to secure their respective wins. An amazing win from Anay Mishra Mall followed on his Seconds debut, winning 6-0  6-0, making his first game a double bagel. Alex Yu and Chris Hunter followed, with Chris starting the game with huge serves to close out points in an eye-catching battle. However, he was unable to finish due to an injury from the opponent’s side. Alex, losing the first set, fought hard to win the match in 3, ending the day with a flawless victory. The boys are eager for next week and ready to fight for another win.

Firsts

The Firsts Water Polo faced off against a strong Trinity side this week, which was certain to provide an interesting and fast-paced game. The first quarter started off slow, with an early goal to Trinity sweeping us off our feet for the first few minutes. Luckily, Jett Semmens used these difficulties to score Shore’s first goal. The following quarter went in Shore’s favour, with Charlie Kovacs scoring two, making the score 6-3 at the half. The following quarters provided a tough fight, but Harrison Brunker’s determination in centre forward, scoring 4 goals in the second half, matched with Alex Woolfe’s perseverance in goals, allowed the team to win 15-7.

Thirds

The Thirds Water Polo began 2025 in style with a dominant display over Trinity. From the opening whistle, Shore was able to control the tempo of the match, and a crisp passing game enabled the scoreboard to tick over.  The first half was dominated by goals to Jonnie Pridmore and Tim Leahy, whilst the second half demonstrated the team’s ability with 7 goals in quick succession to Rory Keeler, Joel Hamilford, Daniel Lord and Tom Wensley. With some strong saves at the back from Oli Graham, the final score of 11-0 has set the team up for a big encounter against Knox in Week 2.
