SLS Report
The 2022 / 2023 SLS Crew!
Year 7 and 8
The waves on Wednesday were smaller and perfect for board training, so after a few warm up board races, the Nippers spent the session doing board training.
On Saturday the surf was up and a strong sweep was running south. All Nippers had a go at negotiating the break with most boys managing in the tricky conditions. After several warm up board races and a surf swim the boys competed in an Ironman relay. The below results were recorded.
Board/Run/Swim – Ironman relay
1st | Chris McIntyre, Miller George, Charlie Martin |
2nd | Will Hoy, Tristan Rowe, Alby Jackson |
3rd | Ben Jones, Xavier Adamo, Xavier du Vernet. |
Year 9 and 10 Bronze Award Group
The Bronze Award group had an intense week of training and learning as they built up the knowledge and skills ready for their four-day Bronze course and assessment at Bilgola in Week 7. Weekday training included time in the School pool to prepare for the pre-course swim assessment, where the boys need to swim 400m in nine minutes. Time at Long Reef was divided between water-based rescue activities, fitness training and land-based learning. The boys got through a huge amount of Bronze Award training including board rescues, tube rescues, signals and a challenging run-swim-run in sizeable surf.

Year 10 and 11 Patrol Group
All members of the Year 10 and 11 Patrol group were able to successfully complete their Bronze Proficiency this week and the recall of their prior learning was excellent. The boys were assessed on their beach-to-water and water-to-beach signals, radio communications, CPR, spinal injury recovery, board rescue and a run-swim-run. Their Bronze Award has now been maintained as all boys have also completed the online component in their own time. Well done to these boys for being so efficient with this process at the start of the season. The two Patrol groups also helped manage a slightly windier, cooler and quieter Long Reef Beach than last week. The Year 10 and 11 boys are now exploring the possibility of IRB Crew training which can then lead to an IRB Driver qualification next season. We will have some well-qualified boys by the time they leave Shore!
