Shore Water Polo Report

1st VII Report
The Shore 1st VII continued their winning streak on Saturday with a 9-7 victory over the strong Scots team. This was the first ever Division 1 win over Scots in Shore’s history, and looks to set them up for a dominant display over Cranbrook this weekend. Shore opened strongly with goals to Zac Izzard and returning captain Harry Underhill. A heroic display in the cage from Tom Serhan blocked almost every Scots attempt, with just 1 slipping through, leaving the score 2-1 at quarter time. A strong start to the second quarter from the Shore boys saw the lead expand to 5-2, featuring a second goal from Harry Underhill, a goal from Charlie Bowditch and Koby Smith’s first goal of the season. Unfortunately, a lapse in defensive concentration in the latter half of the second quarter saw the Scots side mount an impressive comeback, levelling the score 5-5 by half time. Scots continued their momentum into the third quarter with two goals. On the Shore side, only Ed Baxter was able to find the back of the net, finishing the quarter trailing 6-5. Down, yet determined to maintain their undefeated status, Shore outclassed Scots in the final quarter. A heroic display of talent from Zac Izzard who scored his second, third and fourth goals of the match, coupled with a greatly improved defensive effort from the team, saw the Shore side end the game victorious, 9-7.

It was a fantastic win from the 16Bs this week against a school that often gets the better of us. We had worked on ‘drawing the foul’ and ‘goal shooting’ during the week and this practice definitely paid off. The game started with us winning the race to the ball, drawing three consecutive fouls and an excellent goal shot to kick us off. From there we scored consistently all game (except for a slight lull in the 0-0 third quarter) and finished off winning 13-4. The selflessness of the boys, sharing the ball around was impressive at such an early stage of the season. Standout performances from Anderton Stock with a hat-trick in the fourth quarter, Oli Graham and Jack Bunting with some amazing goal saves and Sam Hassall out-swimming the whole Scots team to score three goals.
