Science and Engineering Challenge
On Monday 24 March, a group of 29 Year 10 boys ventured to Homebush to compete in the 2025 Sydney Olympic Park Science and Engineering Challenge, enjoying a day of bridge building, glider flying and problem solving activities.
The boys competed against excellent schools like James Ruse Agricultural High School (James Ruse) and Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College (Monte), and for the first time since 2018 Shore came out victorious!
In the morning, the boys constructed balsa wood gliders that could fly over 15 metres, wired a city’s electricity grid, and built wind turbines that went faster than any other school. The afternoon activities challenged lateral thinking, requiring the team to build eco-houses and fish tanks, and culminated in testing the bridges each school’s team had spent the day building. Despite a shock result for Shore, our domination in all other events led to our victory over the reigning champions, James Ruse! What an exciting and successful day for Science and Engineering.
The next event will be the Super Challenge in Newcastle later in the year, and hopefully our score is high enough to allow us to compete against other NSW winners. Stay tuned!
