CRU Update
Do you believe in demons? Maybe names like Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Satan ring some bells. In the 21st century we don’t see things which are ‘demon possessed’ and the thought of demons living amongst us does not even come to mind. Mostly, these thoughts appear only in movies.
Charlie Corbett-Jones spoke at CRU on Friday from Mark 5:1-20. These few verses are very interesting because it shows Jesus driving demons out of a man. Usually, Jesus would be healing a person from their disease or sickness, or walking on water and feeding thousands, but this driving of demons out of a man is incredibly new and, in many aspects, strange. As Jesus approaches this man, the demons possessing the man know who Jesus is. The demon, named Legion, is afraid and pleads with Jesus, asking him not to torture him. A demon, a very scary, impure and troublesome being, is afraid of this man, Jesus. Jesus then casts the demon out of the man and into some pigs nearby, causing all the pigs to rush down the bank and drown themselves.
Like the man who was possessed by demons, we are so often driven by things in life. For some, these things can captivate our attention like nothing else. It could be an academic goal or a sporting success whereby we are constantly captivated and even controlled. However, we must keep our mind and hearts directed towards God. He is our Lord; He is our Saviour and we must trust in Him.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
