Chaplains’ Chat

Life will always have its high moments as well as some low points. Sometimes these high moments can last a long time, or they can be fleeting pleasures. A wonderful family holiday can be a great extended period of time of great excitement. The joy of watching a sporting team succeed can be immensely satisfying, but this may last only a short time before weekly routines continue. On the other hand, life can have its low moments. These might last a short time or they could well last for a long time. A sickness or an illness or even a tough time at work that seems to continue for many months

In Chapel this Term, we have been looking at the life of David and at the end of David’s life, he can say in 2 Samuel 22 that “the Lord is my Rock.” There is something stable and solid about the metaphor that is used here. God is the one who is stable and unchanging, the one who is always there for us. And of course, as we think about David’s life, there were so many ups and downs as well as challenges he faced. And yet, through all of this, he can say that God has been his Rock. This provides him with great comfort, knowing that God is there for him. And indeed, the wonderful news of the Bible is that God is the Rock for all of us. As we travel through life with all its ups and downs, we can take comfort in this great truth. As our Year 12 students finish the formal aspects of their schooling this Term before their final HSC exams, we hope that they too can have a similar understanding to David’s in knowing that throughout life, God is their Rock.
