Twilight Balmoral Swim and Burger Run

On a hot November weekend in Sydney, it was decided that a swim and burgers was a good idea. So, all those Barry House boys who were in jumped on the Shore bus and headed out to Balmoral Beach after dinner. It was a great way to cool off, before a game of touch footy broke out on the sand, the highlight being Charlie Moses’ huge hit on his older brother, Harry. As the sun set, we all climbed back on the bus for the trip back to Shore, but not before stopping off at Batch Burgers in Kirribilli to pick up a post-swim snack before settling in for the night in the House.

Friday Night Golf and More …

At the end of a big week at Shore, the boarding house is the best place to be to unwind after an hour’s prep from 7-8pm. Downstairs in the TV and Games Rooms will be where it all happens, and the activities are wide and varied; from snooker to table tennis, cooking to watching TV, even card games of 500 have been known to break out. Golf putting competitions have also made an appearance, and along with ice creams and a bit of banter, it’s a great way to see off the week!

Meet Shore’s Community Chaplain

Bouncing out of bed most days, keen to get on with his ministry, Nick Foord has worked as Shore’s Community Chaplain for 14 years. His role centres on supporting our current parent community, as well as Old Boys and staff.

The parent community and Old Boys often see Nick as the face of weddings, baptisms and funerals in the Shore Chapel but a large part of Nick’s role involves private, behind the scenes work across many areas including mentoring, pastoral care, marriage counselling and hospital visits. If needed, he also connects community members with specialists in mental health and other support services.

Nick loves to help people understand the Christian faith more clearly and conducts courses such as ‘Christianity Explained’.

Boarding families are often in contact with the Chaplain via phone or email but Nick also visits current families and Old Boys in Sydney, regional areas and interstate. Nick considers sharing the ‘ups and downs’ in people’s lives as a privilege and is here to help love, support and care for our community.

Ironing and Etiquette

One of the wonderful things that Barry Boarding offers its boys is the chance to hone its life skills, from cooking to ironing, to simple etiquette expectations such as shaking hands. Pictured here is Ironing Lesson 101, with Nick Halliday and Oscar Crookes showing how it’s done.

Fundraising BBQ for Anglicare

On a wind-swept Friday morning at the school’s front gates, The Barry House Year 11 boys hit the tongs and aprons to serve up a BBQ brekkie of bacon and eggs sandwiches with juice. The purpose was to raise further funds for our Anglicare Christmas Food Appeal, and it was a huge success. We raised nearly $400 to add to our already hefty $600, and our clientele included a passing trade of students and teachers, including Dr Wright. We also attracted those drawn to the wafting aroma of BBQ pushed through the school by the high winds, and also those persuaded by the huge advertising campaign conducted through the week! Thank you to Oliver Riddle and Andrew Newton who co-ordinated everything, and to our Year 11 chefs who got up early to cook, serve and eat (the leftovers)!

Thank You Year 7 And City Host Families

On Friday 23 December at Mosman RSL our Year 7 Boarders, their families and their City Host families gathered together to congratulate them on finishing their first year of boarding. Each boarder received a certificate for their achievements this year. It is hard to believe that they have come to the end of their first year and will be moving into Year 8 with the boys now being spread across the Four Boarding Houses. Thanks must go to the staff of School House, especially Mr Blood and Ms Bell who will be leaving at the end of this year.

Year 9 Shore To Monty Dance Night

On the night of the 20^th of November 2018, the men of year 9 Shore School went out on the town as very eligible bachelors. The 15-minute journey from Blue St to Monty St Angelo was met with extreme anticipation, as the men of Shore awaited this highly regarded social event of the ages as Shore boys entered the colosseum, that was the Monty Basketball Gym. Glances from the eyes of Robson House member Charles Dight to other dance partners could be numbered at more than one. After the members of Shore and Monty were lined up together the statutory phrase of “What’s your name” and “How are you going tonight” were uttered.

The magical ballroom was lit by a flame of music that pierced the heart of every young man and woman. Waltzing between the two schools could be described by an extremely ambitious man, that it was a scene of black swans, frolicking in shallow ponds. The rotation of dancing partners worked like a well-oiled machine apart from the awkward wrong foot movement during the barn dance. The uncoordinated sheep of the herd were quickly discovered in the cutthroat game of line dancing. Then the night of fun, enjoyment and a bit of “how ya goin” ended to the disappointment of few that attended the event. Overall an experience that left us with something to go away with. A big thanks for Shore and Monty staff for organising the great annual festivity.

PLC Movie Night and Monte Dance

It’s been a very social term for the boys in Barry, and they have embraced the chance to spend some time with the girls from PLC and Monte. Early in November, some Year 8 Barry House boys took the opportunity to attend a movie night put on by the girls over at PLC, Pymble. A couple of weeks later, Year 9 enjoyed the finer arts of dancing with the girls from Monte. The Year 9s should not have had a problem, given the time spent recently in their post-prep choreography dance sessions in the Year 9 West-Wing dorm!

Visiting the Asylum Seekers Centre

In Term 4, three Year 8 boys from School House (Marlon Cayley, Leith Honor and Harry Peadon), together with Ms. Amanda Crompton, Ms. Cate Fryda and Ms. Eliza Bell, trialled a new co-curricular service activity. They cooked and served a bountiful hot lunch for about fifty guests at the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. This not-for-profit organisation relies on grants, donations and volunteers to provide essential services and assistance to thousands of asylum seekers each year, including many children. The students developed their understanding of some of the challenges faced by refugees and did a great job cooking, serving and talking with the guests. We look forward to continuing this activity in 2019.

Cyrano de Bergerac

A spectacular performance

The play Cyrano de Bergerac was a spectacular performance starring Ben Henchman (11HS) as Cyrano de Bergerac, Jeremy Elliott (11HS) as Christian De Neuvillette who were ability supported by Wyatt Bellotti (11SL), Max King (11SL), Yash Upadhyaya (11SL) and Alec Manchee (9SL). Filled with many twists and turns left most of the audience laughing and on the edge of their seat. I found the relationships in the play made the enjoyment of it much better. Altogether the play was great to watch and if I knew it was so good to recommend it to everyone.

Hodges Lip Sync Battle

On the night of Friday the 16^th of November, Hodges House hosted the Wenona boarding community for a LipSync battle in the Smith Auditorium. The night kicked off at 6:00pm with a BBQ in the Hall Quadrangle that was enjoyed by all. During this time, the two communities began to mingle, and get to know one another, through beginning the planning of acts for the night. At around 7:00pm everyone moved into the Smith Auditorium, and the LipSync Battle commenced, a mention goes to the dedicated stage crew who stayed for the night to coordinate the audio and lights for the event.

Jamie Clark (10HS) opened the night with a wonderful reimagination of “Don’t Stop me Now” by Queen, ultimately winning the battle. Other notable mentions include; Ben Henchman (11HS), Jeremy Elliot (11HS), and two of the Wenona girl’s performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody”,

Angus Colman’s (11HS) crowd pleaser, “tequila”, the crowd favourite.

Mr. G. Davis’ performance of “You’re Beautiful”, and Michael Wong’s (11HS) surprising performance of “Billy Jean”. Senior Play

This year’s Senior Play was Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, in an adaptation by Damien Ryan, with Ms. Amanda Crompton directing and Ms. Eliza Bell assisting. The production featured a number of School House boys. Wyatt Belotti, Max King, Yash Upadhyaya and Alec Manchee each played a number of roles in a dynamic ensemble that brought the streets of Paris and the battlefields of Arras to the Drama Studio. This was a very special performance by an exceptional group of young drama students.

Director of Boarding Update

It’s hard to believe that this will be the final newsletter of 2018. How the years fly by as we get older!

Last weekend saw our New Boarders Sleepover take place for students that will start at Shore in 2019. We had a wonderful weekend with new boarders from years 7-11 attending for Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning. This sleepover was combined with New Boys day on Monday, our boarding staff saw a real sense of excitement amongst the boys coming next year. These boys (and especially our new Year 7 students) will settle into the Shore boarding environment quickly.

Staffing Changes

We will have three staff changes in School House next year apart from Mr Blood leaving and Mr Junee becoming School Housemaster. Kyle and Anna Fifield will be leaving boarding and Shore at the end of this year. Kyle has accepted a position at a school in Tasmania as a year Coordinator and I am sure he will do a wonderful job in that role. I want to thank Kyle and his wife Anna for their work in boarding over the last few years. Kyle has been in School House and has been a wonderful mentor and assistant to the boys and families.

In addition, we farewell Eliza Bell and husband David from boarding (but remaining as a teacher at Shore) and particularly from her role as Master Assisting the Housemaster for the Year 7 boys in School House. Eliza has done a fantastic job with the Year 7 boys and I have appreciated her work in the transition that all our Year 7 boarders face as they move into a new school and new boarding surrounds. This is a crucial role in boarding which sets the boys up for their future years here at Shore. I am pleased to announce that Mr Werner Pienaar will step into this role in School House commencing next year.

Giving Day to support our Country Boarders

The school has been tremendously heartened by the recent fundraising efforts via the Shore Foundation to raise money to assist with future boarding enrolments. Many families throughout the Shore community gave generously on our giving day last Thursday 22 November. Special thanks must go to David Mason-Jones and his team in the Shore Foundation for their efforts. A little over $511,000 was raised or pledged to this fund and it will assist in providing opportunities for more full time boarders from country New South Wales to attend Shore who otherwise would not have been able to do so.

Book Shop on Line from 2019

The book shop at Shore will be closing down next year with all text book sales to go online. The link to this can be found on the Shore website under the community tab, but I have also provided it here for your convenience, sales for books are through Campion. This link also has all the details for the sale of second hand books that families can utilise.

Beginning of Term I, 2019

Tuesday 29 January is the boarders’ afternoon tea on the Chapel Lawn from 3.30pm, after Year 7 have had their Orientation Day. All boarders are expected back in their houses by 8.30pm for Housemeeting. School commences on Wednesday 30 January.

Farewell

It has been a privilege to be a part of the wider group of residential staff that have served and nurtured the boarders of Shore. Without doubt the biggest thrill has been to see our boarders growing into young men as they mature and move through the school. This is why teachers enter into their vocation and of course, in boarding this is heightened as the boys are in our care throughout the week. I will miss the wider boarding community with its parents and extended families and I certainly wish you all well for the future.

I wish all families a relaxed and enjoyable holiday time as we look forward to Christmas. Our thoughts and prayers continue to remain with our farmers in much of New South Wales as they continue to face the drought conditions.

SPEC Update for November

The progress continues on the new Shore Physical Education Centre (SPEC). .

Current Activities:

Excavation works are complete
Foundation works for the pool hall are complete and the lower ground floor structure works are continuing.
Installation of in ground services are nearing completion within the main site.
Major concrete pours have commenced and will continue until the second quarter of 2019.
The lower ground pool walls and rainwater tank are nearing completion.
The delivery of precast columns, panels and steel will commence during November / December 2018.

Next Steps:

Delivery of structural steel members for onsite preassembly using over 9000 bolts, in spans exceeding 30 metres in length.
These will be erected between the pre-cast columns from January 2019 to form the support structure for the classrooms and landscaped terracing.

Daffodil Day

22 boys Barry House boys hit the streets of North Sydney one early morning for Daffodil Day, selling merchandise for The Cancer Council. This year, along with volunteers from the Armed Services and North Sydney Boys’ High School, Barry House helped raise nearly $22,000. Charlie Black, Jackson Bowers, Lachie Clift, Lachie Malcolm, Henry Murray and Dougal Payne (Year 8), Banjo Cole, Adam Daley, Jack Davis, Adrian Lai, Angus Malcolm, Charlie Moses, Tom Pearce and George Penn (Year 9), Hugo Bowhill, Charlie Clift, Oscar Crookes, Sam Hawkins, Hunter Lawson, Charlie Murray, Henry Saunders and Chris Wong (Year 10) not only did an outstanding job in raising money and awareness in collecting for this very worthwhile cause, they were also tremendous representatives for their school.

Pink Cards

Every Friday at lunch, in the dining hall, the Headmaster or his representative arrives to present the Year 7 and 8 boys with pink cards, commendations for good work displayed during the week. Pictured here are Dougal Payne and Lachie Clift (Year 8) who were awarded cards at the end of Week 5. Week 5 also featured a clean Drill and Detention sheet for Barry House, which was eagerly pointed out to Mr Morris, for it comes with a Pizza-Night reward!

New Boarders’ Sleepover

At the end of Week 6, 2019 new Year 7-11 boarders came to Shore for an introductory sleepover, which included a full orientation with parents, finishing with canapes and drinks on the Chapel lawn under a beautiful twilight sky. House Captain, Oliver Riddle spoke about his experiences as a boarder in Barry House, and we even had special guest, current parent Tim Moses, pop in to say a few words! Then, it was goodbye Mum and Dad for some dodgeball in the gym before heading back to Barry House for home-made pizza, table tennis, TV and pool, all the while mixing with current Barry House boys and family, before lights out at 10pm. On Sunday, the boys attended chapel after breakfast, along with their parents, before saying their goodbyes, prepared now for the big journey ahead. We look forward to seeing Will, Charlie, Hugo and Will again soon in January!
