{"id":7252,"date":"2021-06-11T04:08:27","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T04:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/serviam\/?post_type=article&#038;p=7252"},"modified":"2021-06-11T04:08:27","modified_gmt":"2021-06-11T04:08:27","slug":"200-years-of-catholic-education-houses-at-st-ursulas","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/serviam\/article\/200-years-of-catholic-education-houses-at-st-ursulas\/","title":{"rendered":"200 years of Catholic Education: Houses at St Ursula&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2021, the College introduced six new Houses to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">galvanise school spirit, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">embed the history of the College in everyday life and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">build activities around promoting the House Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each House has been named after a significant woman involved in our Ursuline story. Each House also has a symbol, motto and colour. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week, we will explore the significance of three of the Houses &#8211; Girelli, Sheahan and Rowland.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>GIRELLI &#8211; <em>Insieme: United in Thought<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Girelli House was named after the Girelli sisters, <\/span><b>Elisabetta Girelli and Maddalena Girelli. <\/b>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hey established an organisation with the aim of providing maternal love to many pregnant women, as well as a spiritual preparation for youth. The Girelli\u2019s established boarding schools, the Angelini Orphanage, and also set up a nursery school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Girelli sisters reinvigorated the Ursuline Sisters in Italy after the were nearly wiped out by Napoleon. They restored the Merician Institute in Brescia &#8211; the birthplace of the Ursulines. The House symbol of two women united in thought represents the Girelii sisters who had a common goal to look after and care for young women. They had a common desire and commitment to the spiritual training of young women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zafira Leontsinis, Year 11 House Captain, hopes to build community spirit by encouraging others to get involved in House activities. The competitive nature of the activities allows each student to unlock their potential and have fun!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teacher House Leader &#8211; Mr Boscov<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/serviam\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2021\/06\/Girelli.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"522\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>SHEAHAN &#8211; <em>Insieme: United in Growth<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Sheahan House was named after <\/span><b>Sister Ursula Sheahan<\/b>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who offered spiritual guidance to young people and intellectual awakening. Sister Ursula Sheehan was the first Principal of St Ursula&#8217;s College Kingsgrove, when it opened in 1957. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She detailed the history of the Ursuline sisters in Kingsgrove in her book <em>Green Pastures<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the House symbol, the crucifix represents Christianity and the religious school St Ursula Sheahan established. Wheat symbolises growth, guidance and prosperity &#8211; all principles of this Ursuline community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alice Mason, Year 11 House Captain, enjoys leading the House as all students experience a sense of belonging and develop skills in teamwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teacher House Leader &#8211; Mrs Nader<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7254\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/serviam\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2021\/06\/sheahan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>ROWLAND &#8211; <em>Insieme: United in Integrity<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Rowland House was named after <\/span><b>Sister Cordula Rowland<\/b>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as she was an Ursuline nun and taught at a boarding school run by the Ursuline Sisters. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She was very focused on creativity, teaching Art and English, and advocated for equality, development and growth in education for all students. When the Ursuline Sisters journeyed to Australia, she painted an image of their ship, the Duchess of Edinburgh.
