On a beautiful sunny spring Monday the Year 9 Food Technology students participated in a Food in Australia tour of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Led by Indigenous guide Scott, the students investigated and tasted a range of bush foods, including native raspberries, black apples & Davidson plums which Scott buried underground for a week to ripen before we came. Students learned about traditional and modern culinary uses of this produce and how First Nations’ peoples diets began to evolve when European people first farmed food in Sydney.<\/p>\n

While exploring the garden, we were given the opportunity to taste the different ingredients, which was a really exciting experience! Each ingredient had an original taste and was unique in its own special way. It was a significant experience for me (and likely others) as I had never tasted these foods before. This excursion gave me the opportunity to learn much more about Indigenous culture, food and their way of life; it was also an enjoyable day out of the classroom.<\/em><\/p>\n

The highlight for me was walking around the garden and discovering how many native indigenous plants there were and how they were used. We learnt that the majority of the plants were used for medicine and food and how they used it in their daily practice, we even got told some dreamtime stories, and their history of ancestors and culture.<\/em><\/p>\n
