Many hands make light work

Many hands make light work

On Friday 27 November, Year 10 celebrated the good in what has been a challenging year and put words into action during their Reflection Day!

Acting in service of others

This year, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we have focused on our Ursuline value ‘Act’ and have spent time learning about how we can get involved in society and contribute towards helping the most vulnerable or those struggling most in society.

We began our Reflection Day hearing from Christina Gilio from St Vincent de Paul. Christina explained to us the strife and difficulties people face right under our noses and how the Christmas period can create even more stress and financial strain. Christina highlighted the concept that St Vincent De Paul revolves around, ‘Giving a hand up rather than just a handout’, emphasising that whilst band-aid fixes help for a while, eventually the band-aid falls off. This idea resonated with us throughout our day of programs and rotations, as we then went on to complete the following in groups: Vinnies Vans presentation, One Meal presentation, Snack Packs, Breakfast Packs, Toiletry Packs and making Cards of Hope.

Even the smallest action can make a difference

Many hands made light work during every packing rotation and the day pushed us to think beyond our ‘life bubble’, understanding the hardships that others experience and how our small and simple actions can make a massive difference in their struggles. However, throughout the day, many of us were struck with sadness and surreality as we realised that many people go without the everyday necessities and items that we classify as our ‘rights.’

We have all become aware of homelessness, but it isn’t until you put your knowledge into action that you realise the immense impact of homelessness on people’s lifestyles and the work that occurs behind the scenes to help. During our rotation to create Cards of Hope for those doing it tough in our community, we were enabled to add our own personal touches and love to the packs, creating the opportunity for the people who receive the cards to smile and not feel isolated, especially during this exigent year.
