Year 8 are ‘Hooked on Books’

An immersive reading journey

Laughter filled the air and smiles arose as Year 8 dressed up, prepared for and participated in their Hooked on Books showcase.

Hooked On Books was a project that we participated in that encouraged us to really engage with and immerse ourselves in a certain book. Each class in the grade was split into groups and each of those groups received a book. We had to read these books and complete various activities on them that provoked creative thoughts and unique thinking.

Showcasing imaginative ideas

The main event was the Hooked On Books showcase. We were required to create a showbag that reflected our book, and this was open to interpretation, which allowed us to think innovatively about how to present our showbag. It was a great way to review our book and set the theme and idea for our stalls. We each created stalls to promote our books.

There were so many imaginative ideas that groups used to make their stalls stand out, such as cooking, making bookmarks, streamers, balloons, decoration, trivia games, quizzes, raffles, prizes and some even dressed up as characters from their book! This element of the project allowed us to actively interact with the characters and the book in a new way, sharing these ideas and this experience with our peers.

A uniting experience

Hooked On Books was engaging, interactive, fun and different, something that I am sure many Year 8’s thoroughly enjoyed! It was a project that united our whole grade in literature and reading, in an especially unique way.
