Year 9 students take up needle and thread to bring joy

With Christmas around the corner, the Mirrabooka Committee developed a new initiative this term to support those people who are truly in need.

Connecting to the St Vincent De Paul Christmas Hampers initiative for St Vincent de Paul, seven girls from Year 9 Textiles banded together to sew trendy and stylish tote bags to accompany each family’s Christmas hamper.

Made from durable, multi-purpose fabrics, these large, strong tote bags are both machine washable and fully reversible. They are versatile and can be used to carry groceries, for a trip to the beach or even for just transporting clothing.

Students in the Mirrabooka Committee aspire to extend this initiative next year, to involve more girls in sewing and produce more tote bags!

Mirrabooka also aims, with the collaboration of Amaroo, to reuse excess scraps of fabric and donated fabric from the community to make tote bags suitable for all purposes in the most environmentally friendly way. Early next year, we will be calling for donations of fabric or second hand clothing, as tote bags can be made from a pair of old jeans, that floral dress you don’t love anymore or even a beach towel!

Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year!
