This year, make reading your Valentine

Library Lovers Day is celebrated by libraries across Australia on Friday 14 February. As the library team at St Ursula’s, it is a great opportunity to share our love of books with our students.

With the theme this year of ‘uncover something new’, students have been invited to nominate their favourite books to add to our display, and to have a ‘blind date with a book’. This involved the students collecting a book wrapped in brown paper with only the genre and some clues supplied!

On Friday each student or teacher who borrowed a book also received a special Library Lovers’ chocolate to celebrate!

Nurture your love of books today

It has been wonderful to see so many students borrowing books already. While Year 7 students have not received their library cards yet, they are still able to borrow books. Our fiction collection has now been organised into genres to make it easier for students to select books they like. Chapter Chat (library blog) is also a great way to keep up with what’s happening here. Students are invited to follow our blog by entering their email address in the ‘follow by email’ box. Each week we’ll post about our new genres and some great reading suggestions.

Why reading is so important

Award-winning author Ursula Dubosarsky has been announced as the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2020-2021. This significant role is designed to promote the importance of reading, creativity and story in the lives of young Australians. Ursula is passionate about the importance of libraries in supporting teenagers in becoming life-long readers. “Reading is a lifetime project, it’s not something you learn, and that’s it. To be a good reader you have to read all the time,” she says.

Ursula’s theme for the two years is Read For Your Life. She recognises that reading often drops off after primary school, which is why at St Ursula’s we place such high importance on reading. We have a wonderful collection of fiction books waiting to be read!
