For new people to our school community, this is a weekly section in our newsletter looking at sustainability and environmental issues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<p>One of our school goals this year is &#8220;to encourage students and staff to raise awareness of environmental issues, developing their voice, actions and agency\u2026&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There will be contributions to this column from staff and students who are involved in the Secondary School Maailma committee and the Primary School Enviro Girls. Maailma was started in the school over 30 years ago. The name was taken from the Finnish word meaning &#8220;world&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has declared 2021 as the International year of fruit and vegetables. This falls under the United Nations decade of nutrition (2016-2025). More information about this can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/12\/1080492\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We are incredibly blessed in Australia with the variety of produce we have access to. It is important for us to consider the sustainability of any food we purchase, as well as making sure we eat everything we buy, in order to minimise food waste.<\/p>\n<p>In this International Year of Fruit and Vegetables you might like to consider having a vegetarian meal once or twice a week. Challenge yourself to a Meat Free Monday and see what amazing vegetarian recipes you can create. You can get ideas from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meatfreemondays.com\/\">Meat Free Monday website<\/a> \u00a0or obtain vegetarian meals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delicious.com.au\/recipes\/collections\/gallery\/80-comforting-recipes-for-your-meat-free-monday\/fslh8mk9\">Delicious Magazine <\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eating more fruit and vegetables is nutritionally beneficial and is a small step towards improving our planet!
