The opening was easily one of the most memorable moments, with performers coming down the aisles as animals. Seeing them up close really showed the physicality of the cast. The way they moved, crouched and carried themselves made the animal characters feel believable without relying on heavy effects. It set the tone for a production that relied more on performance and staging than on technical tricks.

The overall design was striking, with strong lighting choices and costumes that created a clear sense of place. The percussion added a lot of drive to the bigger scenes, and the ensemble handled the choreography with confidence.

I am currently in rehearsals for Girl Asleep so fellow castmate Zara and I got some cool ideas for our characters, and the physicality of the performers gave me some ideas for my character. The Lion King was an engaging and fun show with a very talented cast.
Charlotte Self

What struck me the most about this production was the incredible stagecraft and artistry which brought the African savannah to life. From the moment the curtain rose, we were transported to a wonderful world of intricate choreography, masterful puppeteering and inspiring choral work.

The show covered a range of vocal and dance styles including traditional African incantation, theatre jazz, ballet and contemporary dance. It was truly unlike any other musical production I have ever seen!

Being in a play myself (Girl Asleep) which uses shadow puppeteering techniques, it was so inspiring to see these techniques mastered by industry professionals. The experience was incredibly immersive, with performers sweeping down the aisles in song, and two percussion players from the live orchestra seated in boxes on either side of the stage. I only wish the songs could have been longer- while the production had an incredibly talented ensemble cast, there was not a lot of ensemble singing.

Otherwise, this show was such a joy to watch, and so accessible to audiences of all ages- I think every audience member could take away something, from the elaborate sets and costumes to the innovative use of puppets, to the awe-inspiring song and dance, there was something for everyone.
Josephine Grayden

Girl Asleep

Rehearsals for our first SCEGGS production of the year, Girl Asleep, are well underway.

Production dates are:

Wednesday 17 June, Thursday 18 June, Friday 19 June at 7pm

Saturday 20 June at 1pm.

Bookings open on Monday 1 June.

Cast member Nina Fitzgerald (Year 8) reports from the rehearsal room:

Rehearsals for our school production of Girl Asleep are steadily in motion and excitement is building throughout our cast and Drama Department.

For those who don’t know, Girl Asleep is a play set in Australia set in the late 1970s.
