Her powerful dramatic monologue \u201cIcarus\u201d is a compelling appropriation of the Greek myth. Her poem can be read along with the other awarded poems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au\/homepage\/195\/young-writers-award\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We are always keen to encourage our students to submit their work into external competitions. Below are a list of some upcoming opportunities. Many of these websites also have incredible resources for passionate poems and writers.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>What Matters Writing Competition<\/strong> is open to students in Years 5 \u2013 12. This competition asks students to write personally on a topic which they are passionate about. Entries are due by Friday 15 May. More information can be found on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitlam.org\/what-matters\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Mosman Youth Awards in Literature<\/strong> invites writers in Years 7 \u2013 12 to submit poetry or creative fiction pieces. Entries for this competition close on 31 May 2026 and more information on these award can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/mosman.nsw.gov.au\/library\/Get-Involved\/youth-awards-in-literature\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Dorothea Mackellar Writing Competition<\/strong> is one of Australia\u2019s most prestigious poetry awards for young people. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cThe Traveller.\u201d The school has registered an account for this competition and your daughter will be able to check with her teacher about entering before the due date of Friday 30\u00a0June. More information can be found on their <a href=\"https:\/\/dorothea.com.au\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Insight Writing Competition<\/strong> is open to students in Years 7 \u2013 12. Students are invited to compose creative pieces (short story, poem, script) of up to 1,400 words. The theme for this year is \u201cIgnite\u201d This competition is open until 1 September. More information can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightpublications.com.au\/insight-creative-writing-competition\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Red Room\u2019s Poetry Forest Competition<\/strong> encourages students to compose poems which have a positive message on climate change. This competition is not yet open, however there are a wealth of resources on the Red Room website and the competition regularly closes in September. More information can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/redroompoetry.org\/projects\/poem-forest\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Hachette Australia <\/strong>prizes are yet to open for 2026, however include prizes for Creative Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction and Poetry.
