NAPLAN Testing

NAPLAN Testing

As many of you would be aware, NAPLAN testing is again being conducted earlier this year. Instead of being held in May, the tests are now being held in March.  As the tests are conducted online there is a two-week window in which we are asked to conduct the tests. The arrangements we have put in place this year are as follows:

Years 3 and 5

  • Wednesday 13 March – Writing Test – Year 3 will complete this with pen and paper and Year 5 will sit this test online.
  • Monday 18 March – the Reading Test will take place on this day. The girls will also complete the Language conventions Test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).
  • Tuesday 19 March – the Numeracy Test will take place on this day.

Years 7 and 9

  • Wednesday 13 March – The Writing Test will be completed first, followed by the Reading Test.
  • Thursday 14 March – The girls will complete the Language Conventions Test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). The girls in Year 9 will also complete the Numeracy Test on this day.
  • Friday 15 March – Year 7 will complete their Numeracy Test will take place today.

If a student is absent on the day of a test, arrangements will be made for them to catch up on the test, provided they return to school within the testing window.

As these tests are again being held earlier in the year, parents can expect to receive the reports on their daughter’s performance earlier than in the past. It is hopeful we will receive this feedback at some point in Term 2 rather than Term 3. Additionally, I would also like to let you know of some changes that came into effect last year to the nature of the report that parents will receive. New NAPALAN Proficiency Standards were introduced last year. Instead of the previous 10 band structure, the report on student performance now consists of four levels of achievement. These new levels are labelled: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs Additional Support. We will provide you with more information about each of these levels and how to interpret the new reports when you receive your daughter’s results.

If you have any questions or you would like further information about anything relating to NAPLAN please contact either Cristi Wilsmore, Deputy Head of Primary (Teaching and Learning) or myself.

Drama News

Drama News

In Drama news this week, you may read about the wonderful House Drama day, drama productions with other schools and Co-curricular Drama opportunities.

House Drama

Congratulations to all on a superb day of Drama and House spirit at House Drama 2024. The energy, time and creativity invested in these original performances continues to astound.

What the students are able to achieve in four weeks is very impressive. The sense of theatricality brought to the day demonstrates wonderful collaboration and imagination. I have received many glowing comments from staff and students and the Judges, all who were genuinely impressed with the theatrical offerings on the day.

There will be some disappointment if your House did not fare as well as you’d hoped – but please know that every House achieved amazing things and you should be very proud of your contribution.

Bravo to the House leaders and committees. Leading a House in the House Drama event is particularly demanding. Much falls on the shoulders of the House leaders. Hopefully you can all reflect on your leadership of this project and recognise a personal growth and garnered knowledge to apply to projects of collaboration in the future. Your Houses are fortunate to have you as leaders.

The challenge this year was using an iconic board game to ignite an original piece of theatre.

Congratulations to Barton on their winning interpretation of Monopoly. In second place was Langley who brought the game of Guess Who to vivid life. And the Game of Life garnered Christian House third place. Docker (Mousetrap), Badham (Battelships) and Beck (Chess) continued the excellence of theatre with their celebrated entries.

A big thank you to our adjudicators Donna Lee, Octavia Barron-Martin and Eva Harris. And also to the many staff who assisted with the running of House Drama – Julia Piazza (Drama Captain & Host), Ms Goodfellow, Mr Hope, Mr Rogers, Ms Lynch, Ms Bolton, Ms Schwedes and Mr Colyer.

House Drama was conducted on Tuesday 27 February.

Year 7 Technology Generational Interviews 2024

Year 7 Technology Generational Interviews 2024

We began the Year 7 Technology course this year with an introduction activity asking our students to interview a family or friend of another generation about their experiences with technology during high school.

Here is a snippet of the wonderful narratives and articles the students produced.

Dial up Phones

Lisa Taylor would come home from school and call her friends every day. The difference between my life and hers is that she had to remember all her friends phone numbers so she could dial them.
Perdita Taylor

My dad Craig told me the phone was in the middle of the corridor, it allowed little to no privacy. It also meant that the occasional awkward moment couldn’t be avoided, if you were to dial a friend, their parent would be the one to pick up, as it was a family line.
Ariel Wilson

In the classroom

My mum Ashlee Hamlin shared with me details of her school life. In most classes there was an overhead projector used for information slides. They also used wheel-in television for educational purposes.
Indigo Hasemer

Computers and TVs were not used in the classroom when Brian McMaster went to school, and the only piece of Technology he used in the classroom was a slide ruler, for maths.
Clementine Reuss

For this project I interviewed my 81-year-old Grandma, who lives in Adelaide. When she was my age, instead of having TVs people used a thing called a slide projector, which was a camera film being projected on the wall by a 16mm projector.
Lily Withers

Researching

The word microfiche threw me! What was a microfiche? I did some research (using technology) and discovered it’s a piece of film with micro photos of newspapers, catalogues, and documents so small you can’t read them. You put the microfilms into a machine that magnifies them onto a screen. Nowadays all this information would just be online!
Anja Baker

There were no computers at school for my parents Joyce and Kevin, “all we used were movie projectors”. When researching information for subjects such as Science, History, Geography, they would use books and encyclopedias.
Madison Coutts

My dad Richard went to the library and used microfilm and books. He used a Macintosh (Apple) computer, watched things on the TV and the teachers used a projector.
Saskia Pym

My mum did not grow up with her own computer. She would have a computer room where only two computers would be and you would have to share them with the whole school…..
Claudia Rennie-Meyenn

Other Technologies

My mum Nikoll used typewriters and a tape recorder in her final years to record and share experiences.
Posie Nobay

When saving files, my father used what’s called a floppy disk which was about the size of an envelope.
Sara Malavich

Beatrice brought in a cassette from the 1980’s with an interview of her Great Grandmother by her Mum.

It was very exciting to hear as I don’t think any of us had heard a cassette before, my mum sounded so cute, it was cool to hear my great grandmothers voice, she sounded so posh and old fashioned.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2024

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2024

It is with great pleasure that I announce the launch of the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) at SCEGGS Darlinghurst.

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition or a fundraiser, but a challenge to each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.

Kindergarten to Year 2

The students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will participate in the Challenge at school. Their online Reading Logs will be completed by me.

Years 3 to 6

The Years 3 to 6 students are invited to participate in the Challenge by reading 20 books, 10 from the PRC booklist and 10 of their own choice. This is followed by the completion of an online Reading Log. The girls will be shown how to complete their online Reading Log during a Library lesson in March.

Every student will be issued with a new Department of Education username and password during their Library lesson.

How to register and record books online:

  1. Go to the website.
  2. Click on log in in the upper top right-hand corner. This will take you to the NSW Department of Education portal login page. This is where students need to enter their username and password.
  3. Complete the reader survey if prompted.
  4. You are now ready to complete the online reading log.
  5. Click on top right – circular icon.
  6. Click on my reading log. Add PRC Book or Personal Choice Book by title.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge concludes on 23 August 2024. All students who complete the Challenge will be presented with a personalised certificate in Term 4.

Please visit the PRC website for further information, or do not hesitate to contact me.

Sailing

Congratulations to Isobel Payne (Year 11) who competed in the Hardy Cup.

The Hardy Cup is a World Sailing International Grade 3 Youth (under 23) Match Racing Event, contested in small keelboats with a crew of five and hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.  There were 10 teams including three international, and the match racing was fiercely contested across four days.  Despite being called up just five days before the event, the junior squad from the RSYS came together brilliantly to walk away with 7th. Isobel was in the position of ’trimmer’, handling both the jib and the spinnaker. (Her sister Gretel (SCEGGS class of 2020) was also trimmer on a senior RSYS team).

It was a thrilling event, with a big mix of conditions – the first day was light but the next three were very windy and challenging.  After a slight catastrophe on day two with their spinnaker, the team recovered to take out another three wins in the second round. They placed 7th overall,  a great end to an intense regatta.

NSW All Schools Teams Racing (Sailing)

Good luck to the following students who will be representing SCEGGS at the NSW Schools Teams Racing Championships being hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron from March 15 -17: Alexandra Argy (Year 11), Isobel Payne (Year 11), Jessica Board (Year 10), Sophie M (Year 10), Michaela Docherty (Year 9), Sophia Bolot (Year 8), Natalie Perkins (Year 8) and Eleanor Di Pilla (Year 7).

Snowsports 2024

For those SCEGGS families who are thinking about participating in the SCEGGS Snowsports Team, now is the time to lock in your accommodation before it all books out. SCEGGS competes in the Sydney Region of Interschools to be held at Perisher from July 16–19. The emphasis at the regional level is on participation so students do not need to be super quick.  Students should however be capable of skiing or boarding down a blue run unassisted.

The competition is open to all students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. More information can be found in this link.

Please contact Alison Gowan on 0418 491 521 if you would like to discuss further.

Debating

Debating

Congratulations to the Primary A, Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 11 Eastside, and Senior B teams for winning their ISDA debates against Sydney Grammar (ISDA) and SBHS (Eastside) on Friday.

Next week, ISDA will be held at St Joseph’s College. The bus will be leaving straight after school, so all debaters need to be prepared with pens, paper/palm cards, and food. St Joseph’s College has specifically advised that if any debater wants a ‘substantial supper’ rather than a ‘light snack’ they will need to bring their own food. A bus will return to SCEGGS at the conclusion of the evening, meaning that debaters returning to SCEGGS will leave St Joseph’s College at 8.45pm. ISDA debates will be on the topic area of ‘Social Issues.’

The Year 7 ISDA debate has been rescheduled to after school on Monday 18 March – prep will be at 3.45, and the debate will go from 4.30-5.30pm. The debate will be held on Zoom so debaters will stay at SCEGGS.

Round 2 of Eastside will be hosted at SCEGGS, and we will be debating Rose Bay Secondary College. Eastside debates will be on the topic area of ‘Law and Justice.’ Year 7 Eastside debaters returning from camp must debate in school uniform.

SCEGGS Amnesty Club

SCEGGS Amnesty Club

This year in Amnesty our group aims to collaboratively involve both the student body and the community in efforts to support significant charities, organisations, and campaigns. In Amnesty we strive to maintain a consistent understanding of international affairs to stay informed of important issues relevant to our community.

As SCEGGS students we believe that to successfully serve and inform our community a global perspective is incredibly important to be responsible global citizens. In Amnesty we aim to enhance our knowledge by further developing our analytical thinking skills and staying informed on governmental and political developments in Australia and throughout the world. Our group aims to act and develop campaigns, petitions, and community initiatives to inform and empower our community.

As International Women’s Day is coming up tomorrow, Amnesty is aiming to research and organise an event/campaign to help support international issues facing women. Throughout the year Amnesty will be involved in many different efforts to support charities and movements that enforce justice and equality, Refugee Week and Reconciliation Day are two examples of events in which Amnesty will be taking time to educate ourselves and form a collective strategy on how to tackle current issues facing these groups.

Amnesty meets every Monday lunchtime in C4 and all students in Years 7-12 are welcome to join.

Traffic in St Peters Street

Traffic in St Peters Street

Pedestrian Safety in St Peter’s Street!

Please help us keep everyone safe in St Peter’s Street, particularly around the pedestrian crossing, by remembering the following rules:

  • Pedestrian Crossings: You must not stop or park on a pedestrian crossing, or within 20m before and 10m after a pedestrian crossing.
  • ‘No stopping’ signs: mean you must not stop at any point on the road or kerb. This includes the entire left-hand side of the street.
  • ‘No Parking’ signs: There is a small “No Parking” section on the right-hand side of the road AFTER the pedestrian crossing. The “no parking” sign indicates that you can stop for less than 2 minutes if you stay within 3m of your vehicle if you are dropping off/picking up passengers or unloading items.
Do NOT stop or park:
  • before the pedestrian crossing
  • on the pedestrian crossing
  • after the crossing on the left hand side of the road

Please help us keep everyone safe in St Peter’s Street by following these important safety signs.

  1. To complete online consent for your child’s school vaccinations, visit: health.nsw.gov.au
  2. Follow the steps to log in to your existing ServiceNSW account. This is the same account you may already use to renew your driver’s licence. If you don’t have a ServiceNSW account, refer to ServiceNSW to create one.
  3. Update or confirm your personal details in ServiceNSW as required.
  4. Complete the School Vaccination Consent Form for your child/ren. You will need to:
    1. Enter your child’s personal details
    2. Provide the Medicare card details for you and your child
    3. Read the linked Parent Information Sheet and privacy statement
    4. Provide consent

Detailed instructions can be found on the NSW Health website.

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper consent form from the school.

The benefits of providing consent online:

  • easily update your child’s details
  • receive SMS and/or email notifications when vaccinations are given
  • faster upload of vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

If you have given consent for your child to be vaccinated at the school clinic, but they are absent on the day of the clinic visit, the school immunisation nurses will try to catch them up at their next visit. Alternately, you can speak to a GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccinations.

For more information on school vaccinations visit here or if you have any questions, please contact South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit on: 9382 8333 (Ext 2).
