From January 2027, the SCEGGS Primary School will proudly transition to the newly established Independent Girls’ Schools Association (IGSA) Junior Sport Program. The launch of IGSA Junior Sport represents a significant milestone in the development of a program that has been designed around the needs of girls in Years 3-6, to foster participation, development, connection, and excellence in sport in girls from an early age.

Bringing together 19 leading IGSA schools across NSW, the program offers a comprehensive sporting framework that includes weekly Saturday competitions and sport-specific carnivals which create more opportunities than ever for girls to compete and thrive. Beyond weekly competition, the program also introduces clear representative pathways, enabling talented young athletes to participate in IGSA carnivals, trial for IGSA teams and progress to higher level representative pathways.

SCEGGS is excited to be a founding member of this new competition, continuing the tradition of championing women’s sport in Australia. From the historic collective pay agreement for the Matildas, the pooled revenue models for our Australian Women’s Cricket team or the minimum wage frameworks in the AFLW and Super Netball competitions, there is great deal to be gained by prioritising and championing equality of opportunity, access to key infrastructure and payment in women’s sport …. and it all begins with prioritising these opportunities for young girls in our schools and in our local community sport programs.

We are excited to be involved in the new IGSA Junior Sport Program, which reflects a significant shift towards a model that champions girls’ participation, development and wellbeing.

NAPLAN Reports

During Term 1, students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 participated in the National Assessment Programme in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).  These tests were conducted by every school in Australia during March and covered the areas of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) and Numeracy.

We received the hard copy of these reports from NESA at the start of this term and have since posted them on to parents/carers via mailing address we have on file. In the package, you will find a report providing you with information about the proficiency standard that your daughter has attained in each of the NAPLAN test domains this year. Since 2023, student performance in these domains has been reported against 4 levels of achievement. These levels are labelled: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs Additional Support. Please refer to the enclosed information for parents on ‘How to read the student report’ for more detail about these standards.

In addition to identifying the proficiency standard into which your daughter falls, the individual report provided for each girl describes the knowledge and skills demonstrated by your daughter in these tests, as well as information about how your daughter’s results compare with the SCEGGS cohort and the overall performance of all Australian students. As was reported in the media at the time, there was a degree of technical disruption experienced by students in Years 5, 7 and 9 in the eastern states of Australia while undertaking the Writing Test this year. As a result, the school average has not been reported for any NSW School for any student undertaking the online writing test in NSW. It has, however, continued to be reported for Year 3 students.

Subject Selection Afternoons Week 4

We have come to the point in the year where students in Year 7, 8 and 10 need to start thinking about making wise subject choices for the 2027 school year.

Our subject selection afternoons are organised during the school day to provide a time for all students in the cohort to hear from key staff in the school about the process, as well as ask specific/individual questions of different subject teachers to help them make a wise decision for the following year. Parents are also warmly invited to attend these information sessions with their daughter.

Parents have already been sent a detailed email with information regarding the format and students will receive information booklets this week (via email) so there is time for ‘at home discussions’ prior to the afternoon sessions. Parent and carers may access the information booklets here.

• For current Year 10 students and their parents the information session is on Tuesday 11 August, commencing at 1.30pm – Lecture Theatre
• For current Year 8 students and their parents the information session is on Wednesday 12 August, commencing at 2.15pm – Great Hall
• For current Year 7 students and their parents the information session is on Thursday 13 August, commencing at 2.00pm – Lecture Theatre

Turn Outgrown Sporting Gear into Something Great

As our children grow, so does the pile of sporting equipment they leave behind. Instead of letting old basketballs, tennis racquets and football boots gather dust – or worse, end up in landfill – let’s give them a second life.

Our Festival on Forbes Second-Hand Sporting Goods Stall is collecting quality pre-loved sporting equipment for resale at this year’s Festival. Every donation helps reduce waste, supports our school community and gives someone else the chance to enjoy equipment that’s no longer being used.

We’re looking for everything from tennis racquets, hockey sticks, cricket bats and golf clubs to ski gear, Pilates mats, scooters, balls and more – all in excellent, usable condition.

Donations can be dropped off on Friday morning from 7.30am-9.45am in the Forbes Street car park.

We’re also looking to borrow large plastic storage tubs to help sort and display donations. If you can help, please contact Claire.

Riding bicycles to and from school

A number of students are riding bikes to school each day. Most of these are traditional bicycles, however, an increasing number of students are selecting to ride an e-bike to school.

There are great benefits to bike riding, particularly the reduction in local traffic and our environmental impact, as well as the promotion of physical activity. However, it is very important to remember that there are a number of safety and legal obligations for parents to consider when making the decision to allow your daughter to cycle to school.

• Primary school students are safest when they are supervised by an adult when riding.
• Children under 16 can ride on the footpath, unless there are signs prohibiting cycling.
• All cyclists MUST wear a helmet and protective gear, understand and follow the road rules and give way to pedestrians.
• All bikes should be in good safe working order fitted with working brakes, reflectors, a bell and lights.
• All cyclists must store their bike safely and securely in the bike racks provided in the Primary School and Secondary School for the duration of the school day.

It is important to remember that these same rules apply to the riding of e-bikes, whether this is an e-bike that is personally owned or a rental, such as a Lime Bike. Students should NOT be riding e-bikes to school without a helmet at any time.

Additionally, it is important to note that in NSW there are a number of legal requirements that e-bikes must meet to ride them on NSW roads. These rules are:

• a maximum continuous rated power of 500 watts
• a motor that provides throttle power assistance up to 6km/h or when the rider is pedalling up to 25km/h
• a motor that does not provide power at speeds higher than 25km/h.

E-bikes are typically heavier and faster than traditional bicycles, which can increase the force involved in a crash, heighten the risk of serious injury, and make them more difficult to control and manoeuvre. As a result, the NSW government is currently considering the introduction of minimum age limits to ride an e-bike on NSW roads. These restrictions are not yet in place, but it is important for parents to be aware that the government is considering recommendations of a legal minimum age between 12 and 16 for riding an e-bike in NSW due to the increased risk that e-bikes pose to the rider. We will provide more information on this issue when a decision has been reached.

The cycling route and surrounding traffic environment to and from school will be slightly different for each student. Sometimes the busy roads and conditions at specific times of the day can impact on rider safety and the safety of other road users and pedestrians. If the school deems that a student is displaying unsafe behaviours when riding to and from school, we may deny permission for the student to bring a bike to school.

Please take note of this information when considering allowing your daughter to ride either a traditional bicycle or an e-bike to school. If you have any questions, please reach out at any time.

Last Wednesday the Inaugural SCEGGS Landscape Prize was officially opened by renowned Sydney artist, Tom Carment.

There were 70 entrants this year across the Primary and Secondary Schools. Tom awarded a 1^st prize, Highly Commended and gave some Honourable Mentions to students in the 3 categories of Primary (Years 5 and 6), Junior (Years 7 to 9) and Senior (Years 10 to 12).

Primary Years 5 and 6 Category

Honourable Mention: Bronte Lusted (Year 5) and Imogen Symons (Year 6).

Highly Commended: Cleopatra Norman (Year 5) and 1^st Prize: Madeleine Chirakis (Year 6).

Junior Years 7 to 9 Category

Honourable Mentions: Elizabeth Austen (Year 7), Elizabeth Malivong (Year 8) and Caitlyn Yan (Year 7).

Highly Commended: Sarah McIntyre (Year 9) and 1^st Prize: Zara Pulley (Year 9).

Senior Years 10 to 12 Category

Honourable Mention: Astrid Straesser (Year 12), Highly Commended: Amerleah Leota (Year 10) and 1^st Prize: Perri Lawrence (Year 10).

Sales on the night amounted to $700 which will be forwarded to the Let’s Build a School Foundation.

Old Girls’ Art Exhibition

SCEGGS OGU is delighted to offer for sale nearly 100 amazing art works, produced by Old Girls, current and former Visual Arts staff, and friends of the School community. With 30% of the sale price of every artwork donated to the school to support Old Girls’ scholarships, this is an opportunity for former students and families to support the next generation of SCEGGS girls.

Book Character Parade

The annual Book Character Parade will take place at 9am on Friday 28 August, in the primary playground. The event is organised to celebrate Book Week 2026 and is a highlight of the library calendar!

The Book Week theme, Symphony of Stories, reminds us that every story has its own unique voice and that, together, stories create a wonderful celebration of imagination, creativity and connection.

Students are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character and bring a book that matches their outfit. The girls may come to school already dressed in their costume and go home the same way. If girls come to school or go home by public transport, they will need to wear their uniform to school and change into their costume when they arrive.

Parents should ensure sensible shoes are worn as “character” shoes can be worn for the parade only. Girls should also be aware that it is a normal school day, and they need to sit and move around the classroom as usual, so large or uncomfortable costumes may not be such a good idea!

When planning your child’s Book Week costume, please ensure that costumes and accessories are suitable for a primary school setting. Replica or toy weapons should not be brought to school, and we encourage students to choose book characters that are age-appropriate and respectful of our school community.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 77 They Built This City with Claire Middleton 

When thinking about the history of your local neighbourhood or noticing the changes in infrastructure, we may wonder who gets to decide as to the nature and character of where we live. It must be a complex task with lots of voices and opinions in the mix, trying to please a wide variety of residents, business owners and other folk. Claire Middleton spent most of her career as a town planner and has had a major influence in the development of a number of suburbs and cities. In this episode, we talk about how she got into this line of work, what are the main factors that need to be considered in designing a town and the importance of listening to the community. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Bee Brilliant! The Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee is Back

The Primary School is excited to announce the return of the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee to our school for the third consecutive year!

As part of our ongoing focus on developing strong literacy skills, the Spelling Bee encourages the girls to recognise the importance and value of correct spelling in a fun and engaging way.

The competition is open to all girls in Years 3–6. The school round will be conducted online in Week 7 (31 Aug-4 Sept), with students challenged to spell 30 randomly selected words, having 25 seconds to spell each word. Students with the highest number of correct words in the fastest times will progress to the State Finals, with the opportunity to advance to the National Finals.

This year, participation is optional. Girls who would like to challenge themselves and take part in the competition will need to register, with a parent/carer completing a consent form.

By placing girls at the centre of sport, it recognises the important role that physical activity plays in building confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and a commitment to personal excellence.

SCEGGS is proud to be part of this new model, designed exclusively for girls and committed to creating an environment where every student feels a sense of belonging, is encouraged to participate, and has the opportunity to develop, and thrive through sport.

Saturday Sport Review

Saturday morning sport began under grey skies and steady rain. While the wet weather unfortunately saw the Year 3 Netball fixtures cancelled, two IPSHA Touch Football teams took to the field.

The 4A team continued their outstanding start to the season with another dominant performance, defeating Tara 9–0. Their speed and teamwork were on full display as they controlled the game from start to finish.

The 5A team faced a much tougher contest against Newington. With just 10 minutes remaining, the scores were locked at 4–4 and the game could have gone either way. The SCEGGS girls lifted the intensity and their efforts paid off as they crossed for four quick tries in the closing stages to secure an impressive 8–4 victory.

It was particularly pleasing to see the girls listening carefully to their coaches, quickly applying feedback, and making noticeable improvements to their tactics. We look forward to seeing this momentum continue throughout the season!

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Alice Chandler (Year 6) on her outstanding achievement in the ESTA Australian Open Division 6 competition. Competing in the ESTA competition for the very first time, Alice and her doubles partner enjoyed a remarkable debut season, remaining undefeated throughout the competition before going on to win the Grand Final. Congratulations to Alice on this well-deserved success and look forward to following her future achievements on the court.

Term 4 Sport

Activity Selection for Term 4 Sport will open at 10.00am (in line with Primary Co-curricular) on Friday 7 August, in Clipboard.

Golf

Congratulations to Sondrine Bethke (Year 11) who was the runner up at the NSW Junior Golf Championships that were held at Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club on the Central Coast over the holidays.  

The championships ended in a thrilling finish with a three-way tie going to a playoff. Sondrine plays out of Bonnie Doon Golf Club and previously competed at the Australian Junior Amateur that was held in Ballarat earlier this year. We look forward to Sondrine representing SCEGGS at the IGSA Invitational Championships later in the year.

Netball

Congratulations to the Year 7A Netball team who competed in the St George Netball Carnival last weekend. The team placed 2^nd in their division.

Gymnastics

A big congratulations to Georgia Lim (Year 7) and Jamilla Yamani (Year 10), who competed at the Gymnastics Australia National Championships in the Future International level in the first week of the holidays in July.

They showed great artistry, skill and resilience, helping the NSW team place second overall. Individually, Jamilla placed 8th overall in the over-13s, with 6th on Bars, and Georgia placed 8th in the under-13s and 4th on Floor.

At the completion of the competition, Georgia was selected to attend a Gymnastics Australia National Training Camp at the AIS in Canberra in August. Congratulations to both girls on these fabulous results.

William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

On Sunday 26 July, 65 enthusiastic young actors auditioned for SCEGGS’ next production – William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

Director, Mr Colyer, reports that everyone presented solid work, and the Drama Department thanks them for submitting themselves for casting consideration.

The casting process is one that involves many considerations. These include availability, assembling a balance that supports the vision of the production, command of text and a willingness to play and have fun.

Cello Masterclass at Opera House

Last Tuesday, 13 students from Years 7-10 had the opportunity to attend a masterclass with the renowned cellist, Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Growing up in a very musical family in the UK, Sheku began learning the cello at age 6 and later studied the Royal Academy of Music before performing at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018 when he was just 19.

During the masterclass, we had the pleasure of listening to SSO Fellows Noah Lawrence and Rio Kawaguchi, along with Sydney Conservatorium of Music student Andy Lin play pieces they have been studying. Sheku offered inspiring advice, encouraging them to trust their ears and imagination, stay connected with the audience, and fully embrace the character and emotion of the music. He spoke about shaping phrases with greater expansion and allowing harmonies and key changes to tell a story. His thoughtful and creative coaching left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance, and I know many of us left feeling inspired to put Sheku’s advice into practice!

EXTERNAL EISTEDDFODS

Participating in an external eisteddfod is a valuable opportunity for students to develop confidence, performance skills and musical resilience. Performing for an independent adjudicator provides constructive feedback, encourages goal setting and exposes students to a broad range of repertoire and performers. We encourage students to consider participating in well-established events such as Sydney Eisteddfod, Inner West Eisteddfod, City of Ryde Eisteddfod and Wollongong Eisteddfod, all of which offer a wide range of instrumental, vocal and ensemble performance opportunities for young musicians. A number of primary students have been involved in Eisteddfods recently and have some wonderful results to share.
