From Ms Allum

From Ms Allum

I am very pleased to announce that Ms Laura Connolly has been appointed to the senior position of Director of Student Wellbeing here at SCEGGS. As part of the School Executive, she will be responsible for providing educational leadership within the school in student wellbeing; overseeing the wellbeing care, guidance, and growth needs of each student. I know she will contribute strongly to all areas of the work of the School. I am looking forward to working with her closely and watching as our student wellbeing and intervention programs evolve and strengthen.

We will move soon to appoint an additional member of staff, a Head of Student Wellbeing Programs, reporting to Laura Connolly. They will be responsible for the implementation of a range of wellbeing programs in the Secondary School such as the Form program, outdoor education programs, and assisting the Director of Student Wellbeing to promote positive relationships so that students can reach their full potential. I will keep you informed about this appointment as the weeks ahead progress.

I hope the term has started well for you all.

My best wishes to you.

Changed Rules re Mobile Phones at school

Changed Rules re Mobile Phones at school

As I outlined last week in Behind the Green Gate, we are going to change the rules around the use of mobile phones by students on the school grounds. I did outline the reasons for this last week, but, in summary, we have been concerned over recent times about a much greater increase in the use of mobile phones at school, a seeming increase in students’ dependency on them, and just the plain distractibility of students too.  Deep learning and meaningful relationships can’t occur if you are checking your phone every few minutes. And having to make some smaller decisions on your own, to problem solve or demonstrate a sensible approach to life’s little difficulties will help develop maturity, resilience, and independence.

When students arrive at school each day, the girl is to put the phone in their locker or in their school bag. It is to remain in this place throughout the school day, and not checked or used at all.

We do understand that parents and students do communicate with each other about how the student is going to get home, or if sport training is cancelled on an afternoon, etc. Girls can check their phone for messages at 3.10pm at the end of the school day and send a message to parents if arrangements have changed then. Of course, parents can check Twitter if they want to know if Sport training is cancelled due to weather conditions etc. And we would encourage families to have thought through and communicated a “Plan B” with each other if it looks like sport might be cancelled due to wet weather.

If there is some urgent communication needed throughout the day, then the General Office is the way to do this. We will allow girls to ring home from the General Office if necessary, and we will pass on messages to girls from home if this is needed.

We do understand that there are a small number of occasions when teachers would like the girls in the Secondary School to use their phone in class for educational purposes. The girls will be sent from class to get the phone and will be given the time to return the phone to their lockers before the end of that period, so that there is no possibility that the girl has the phone on them at any other time.

We understand that some girls are using their mobile phone or smart watch to purchase items from the School Cafeteria. This will no longer be allowed. There are other ways to pay at the cafeteria – there is another article in this newsletter which outlines this.

From Monday 9 May, if girls are found to have their mobile phone on them between the hours of 8.10am and 3.10pm, it will be confiscated and given to the General Office or Primary Office. This will apply even if they were not actually using it; for example, if it is in their pocket or pencil case, etc. If their phone is confiscated, they will be able to retrieve it at the end of the school day, and they will be given a penalty point. If a girl has their phone confiscated more than once or twice, we will be talking with parents about this, and further action will be taken.

Girls and parents should also understand that filming on the school grounds, on any device at all, including the school laptop, is not to occur without a teacher’s express permission. This includes making TikTok videos using the school device (or indeed any device).

It is also important for each girl to understand some of the activities which we regard as particularly serious. Under no circumstances should mobile phones ever be switched on or used inside toilets or change rooms. No-one is ever to take still or moving images of any person or audio recordings of any person without their express permission beforehand. The school will take swift and strong action against any student not following these clear rules.

Every member of the SCEGGS community (girls, parents and staff) has the right to feel safe and comfortable within the school community. If a student receives any inappropriate communication, this should be kept on the phone and be reported immediately to Class Teachers, Form Teachers or the Year Co-ordinator.

Mothers’ Day Breakfast

A reminder that we will be welcoming the significant women in the lives of our Primary School girls to join us for a Mothers’ Day Breakfast on Friday morning. Please join us on the Primary playground from 7.30am. Light refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing you there.

Stage 2 Musical

Preparations are well underway for the Stage 2 Musical “The Little Mermaid” that will be performed in the Great Hall on Wednesday 18 May. On Tuesday the girls spent the day immersed in musical preparation, creating props, and costumes and fine-tuning their performances. The girls displayed wonderful creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout the day. We are thoroughly looking forward to their performance and thank Mrs Cleworth and her team for all the hard work that has gone into preparing for the musical so far.

Before and After School Care Vouchers

The NSW Government has made available to families of school-aged children a $500 voucher that can be used to reduce the out-of-pocket costs of before and after school care. This voucher can be applied for using this link or through your personal Service NSW account.

SCEGGS is now registered to redeem these vouchers for children that attend our After School Care Service.

If you have registered for a voucher and it has been approved, please forward this voucher, containing a QR code to Olga Karpova in the SCEGGS Business Office. This will be then offset against your school account for After School Care costs.

Please note, that your child must be registered to attend our After School Care before the voucher can be redeemed. Please contact Fran St. John with any queries you might have regarding After School Care registration.

The Role of Giving at SCEGGS

The Role of Giving at SCEGGS

The Capital Campaign Committee recently sat down with Leith Mills to discuss the benefits of a SCEGGS education and the role of the SCEGGS parents and community in assisting the school to deliver that education. With an enduring and proud association with SCEGGS as a past parent and Trust Board Member and now, as a grandmother to two girls in the Primary School, Leith’s words remind us that giving has been an essential part of the success of SCEGGS.

Mrs Leith Mills pictured with Ms Allum in 1996 presenting the School with $100,000 as the culmination of the Centenary Sports Hall Campaign, a facility that our girls enjoy today!

SCEGGS Inter-house Cross Country Results

After several failed attempts we were finally blessed with good weather and able to hold our Secondary Cross Country Carnival on Monday morning at Queens. Congratulations to all competitors who turned up bright and early to participate. A special thank you to Ms Lisa Thompson who coordinated the morning and all the PDHPE Staff and coaches who assisted. Results will be announced at Assembly and published in the next issue of Behind the Green Gate.

Sailing – NSW Schools Teams Racing Competition

SCEGGS had a team who took part in the NSW Schools Racing Competition that was held over 3 days at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Our competitors were:

  • Hannah Kernohan
  • Xanthe Kibble
  • Gemma Ashton
  • Olivia Chadwick
  • Isobel Payne
  • Grace Morrow
  • Simran Murphy
  • Georgia Cate Baker Wood
  • Abigail Tattersall
  • Michaela Docherty
  • Jessica Board

The SCEGGS team placed 11th overall competing against other teams from Cranbrook, Scots, Ascham, Wenona Redlands, Canberra Grammar, Monte, PLC Sydney, Sydney High and St Aloysius. This was an excellent result with limited preparation. Our sailors were happy to brave the adverse weather conditions. Over the course of the 3 days there was wind, rain, no wind and sunshine which tested their skills in various conditions.

In sailing competitors compete together regardless of age or sex. This made for some entertaining banter when competing and beating some of the larger boys’ schools.  Thank you to Sophie Hunt (mother of Isobel) for doing the boat official role and for Hannah Kernohan who organised and trained the team in the lead up.

IGSA Hockey

Congratulations to Jess Weatherall and Madeline Tudehope who were selected in the IGSA Hockey Team. They will now compete at the NSWCIS U’16 Hockey Championships next week. We wish you both good luck for this competition.

NSW Touch Regional Championships

SCEGGS had several students who represented Rebel at the NSW Regional Touch Championships that were held on the weekend on the Central Coast. Congratulations to Emma Juneja and Sophie Davis who played in the U16 competition. Lily Cooney played in the U14 competition. Both teams placed 5th and narrowly missed out on the semi-finals. It was a great weekend of very high quality of touch and our students played very well.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

This week’s banner is a work by Old Girl, Saskia McCarthy (CLASS OF 2019). Saskia’s HSC Body of Work was acquired by SCEGGS for the Katrina Collins Collection which is comprised of Year 12 works that the school purchases at the conclusion of each year. Due to COVID complications, many artworks have only been recently framed and returned to us ready to hang. We are so looking forward to finding new places around the campus to exhibit a number of works that will add new, fresh perspectives to the collection. Many of these works are depictions of recent experiences such as lockdowns, visual statements from Indigenous perspectives about the Pandemic, and conceptual examinations of politics and life during the past 3 years.

Year 11 Landscape Exhibition

Year 11 students recently mounted an impressive show of their works created in term 1 based on their investigation of the Australian Landscape. Students worked across a range of media areas including monoprinting, etching, digital photomedia, drawing and collage. A selection of their works are included here. We are excited to see them begin a new self-directed series of works this term based on the Found Object.

Go Greener – Snip the straps!

Go Greener – Snip the straps!

In this week’s Go Greener, two Year 11 students from the Maailma Environment Club share some tips on environmentally-friendly alternatives to disposable face masks.

In the heat of lockdown last year, every minute of the day 3 million disposable face masks were thrown away across the world. This sums up to 129 billion face masks disposed of globally, every month into landfill. Although face masks are not as prevalent in our society today, due to the relaxation of restrictions, it is still highly recommended at certain events such theatre performances and other hot spots. The problem with a disposable face mask is that it is not recyclable, and when in landfill, the plastic inside takes 450 years to break down. This is the same length of time for one plastic bottle to break down.

So how can we help? Although wearing masks has become unavoidable in many places, there are measures that we can all take to minimise the risk and danger that they pose to our environment. Phelp Bondaroff from the University of Cambridge emphasises the importance of simply cutting the straps from these disposable masks when throwing them away. There have been instances where animals, such as birds and sea-life get entangled in the straps and it also reduces the likelihood of the masks becoming stuck on trees and plants. Of course, if you cannot do this, finding a lined garbage bin with a closed lid is also helpful.

What are some other alternatives? The most environmentally-friendly alternative is a reusable cloth mask, preferably with a filter that can be removed. This prevents more masks being disposed in landfill, decreases the risk of endangering wildlife and reduces littering. This also takes into consideration hygiene as you can easily wash the masks, preventing a build-up of bacteria which was a previous safety hazard of cloth masks. So, next time you are thinking about wearing a mask, we encourage you to consider how you will dispose of it and whether you are comfortable making the switch to a reusable cloth mask.

In this week’s issue we proudly share another Podcast episode, some exciting lunchtime groups and a long held SCEGGS tradition!

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you all had a good break over the Easter period. I know Term 1 was tiring for a lot of people due to all sorts of reasons so I hope that you were able to refresh for what is ahead.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 22: Being a good sport about sport

Like many of our community, the dreaded COVID got me towards the end of last term. A number of staff contracted the virus around the same time. In my isolation, I was able to record a couple of podcasts with others who were also stuck in a room with not much to do. This episode is with our Director of Sport, Alison Gowan. We discuss some of the challenges of doing sport over the last couple of years and how things have changed. We also talk about the importance of offering sport at school and what are some of the deeper lessons we learn from participating in it. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast and Deezer, so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.

Two new lunchtime groups!

After a good start towards the end of Term 1, the lunchtime groups run by the RE Department are in full swing again. For several years, SCEGGS has offered the opportunity for students to get together at lunchtime to discuss issues related to religion, God and the Christian faith. They are open to all students regardless of what type of faith background you might come from or even if you don’t know what you believe. It’s a place to ask questions and explore some of those things we all think about. Both groups are run by Miss Jennifer Coleby, one of our Religious Education teachers. “Glow” is the group in the Primary School for Years 4 to 6. It will happen every Monday at lunchtime in the 5W classroom. “Eunoia” is the group for all students in Years 7 to 12 and will be held every Friday in my office. The word “Eunoia” comes from the Ancient Greek and means “a well mind, spiritual thinking”. Please let me or Miss Coleby know if you have any further questions.

Confirmation at SCEGGS

Confirmation has been part of the SCEGGS tradition since 1927 . It is the Christian practice of confirming the promises made on one’s behalf at baptism. By being confirmed, the confirmee is saying that they understand the Christian faith and want to make it an important part of their lives. It is a formal way of declaring publicly a belief in Jesus Christ. The confirmation ceremony is not only an expression of faith but also a welcoming into the worldwide Christian church.

Confirmation is offered to all students in Years 8 to 11. There will be a number of meetings held during lunchtimes to prepare for the confirmation ceremony. During these meetings we will be looking at the basics of the Christian faith, discussing their importance and answering any questions you may have. Neither baptism nor connection with the Anglican Church is necessary. There is also an opportunity for those seeking baptism within the confirmation process. A confirmation service will be held in third term in the school chapel, officiated by the Bishop of South Sydney, the Reverend Michael Stead. Relatives and friends are invited to this very special occasion.

If you are interested in being confirmed this year or have any questions about it please contact me via email or call me before Tuesday 24 May.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at SCEGGS

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at SCEGGS

Going for a hike when there is nowhere to go!

The last couple of months have given us yet another lesson on how connected we are to the environment, and how dependent we are on its benevolence. Following on from bushfire smoke haze, the bushfires themselves, extreme temperatures and two years of COVID, the last few months have seen unprecedented rainfall swamp our attempts to further the program – initially due to the extreme weather itself, and currently due to the after-effects of closed National Parks. We apologise to all those who have been disadvantaged, but still urge our candidates to be patient and resolute; we have enough flexibility in the system to still complete all the expected hikes within the year, so that the girls will have caught up and be in a position to complete their Awards within a typical time frame.

We urge the girls to stay motivated with their Service, Skill and Recreation components, so that when their opportunity arrives to complete an Expedition, they will be able to finish off their Award without delay.

Fortunately, in the past few weeks we have managed to complete a Bronze and two Silver Expeditions., the first using a combination of exploring and navigating the “little paradise” of Dangar Island with camping at Crosslands, while the Silvers were completed in the Blue Mountains by using the few tracks that are still open and camping on private land. Special congratulations to the Silvers for coping with the cold autumn temperatures in Blackheath and Katoomba. We also appreciate the maturity shown by the girls in accepting the unusual arrangements and conditions forced upon us by the atypical routes and campsites.

Should there be any further questions or problems with your Award, please feel free to catch Ms Bower or Mr Swain around school, emailing to joannebower@sceggs.nsw.edu.au, or checking the Duke of Edinburgh website, or the SCEGGS Duke of Edinburgh resources on Cognito.

We look forward to two things: better weather, and seeing our SCEGGS girls bushwalking in the outdoors and enjoying the Australian environment at its most welcoming!

Friday Film Club Returns!

Friday Film Club Returns!

I love stories! I love hearing about other people’s experiences, how they live their lives, what they think…

Sandra Hall, a Sydney film critic, agrees. She wrote, “Lovers of film exult in its ability to put you inside other people’s lives.”

I have been a passionate film-goer ever since I saw my first movie at the age of six, Anchors Aweigh, in the cavernous Regent Theatre in Melbourne with its gigantic chandelier and red velvet seats. Sadly, I can’t provide red velvet seats, but I can share bean bags, delicious afternoon tea, and some extraordinary stories on film with you.

Below is the list of films and screening dates. Screenings will be held on Fridays in S5 at 3.30pm and afternoon tea will be provided before the screening. Students will need to collect their own bean bags from the library.

(As the films are rated M or MA15+ you will need to be 15 years old to attend the screenings.)
