Outdoor Classroom Day in the Primary School

Outdoor Classroom Day in the Primary School

On Thursday 23 May, the Primary School celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day. The Student Representatives enjoyed providing and facilitating a range of activities for all the girls to participate in, and support the initiative at lunch time, led by each year group’s representatives. The girls were involved in making necklaces, dream catchers with wool and natural materials, rock painting to be displayed in the fairy garden, painting wooden coasters, making animals out of paper rolls, and painting material bags.

Outdoor Classroom Day is an initiative supporting the evidence that learning outside of the classroom engages and excites children and is key to improving children’s health, wellbeing and happiness, and is an essential part of their development.

Some of the benefits of learning and playing outside include enhanced social and collaborative skills, better engagement with learning, and overall happiness.

Here are some images from the day

Year 6 Camp

Year 6 Camp

In Week 3, Year 6 set off on their Outdoor Education Camp at Attunga in the beautiful Southern Highlands. We were extremely lucky to have beautiful weather. The sunny days made the views even more spectacular, and the clear nights allowed for stargazing and even the sighting of a shooting star!

Southbound staff taught the girls the importance of always caring for the natural environment and enabled them to identify the specific trees and plants that were once used for food, healing wounds and making shelters, as they trekked on their Bushwalk.

The giant swing was a huge hit with both staff and students, with most girls and staff taking themselves 18 metres high to experience the exhilarating view. Other highlights included mountain bike riding, canoeing and a range of initiative activities. Year 6 particularly enjoyed the talk from an Indigenous Elder; his knowledge and experience of the land allowed the girls to learn the method of starting a fire using sticks, make music using leaves and embrace the land.

It was wonderful to see Year 6 being so supportive of each other, following the challenge by choice motto by providing encouragement when needed and accepting everyone’s choices.

We were very proud of the girls and the way they conducted themselves throughout the entire camp, stepping out of their comfort zone, working as a team, and forging new friendships. There are so many positive memories that Year 6 will take away from this camp and it was a pleasure for the staff to accompany this great year group on their final Primary School camp.

Reflection from the students

Annabelle, Ella, Elodie, Sarah and Claire have written a few words about their experience at Year 6 Camp and how they were able to take the learning dispositions from the classroom and use them at camp. Great to see a positive transfer of learning!

“During Year 6 camp we had to use our SCEGGS learning dispositions. Year 6 showed Curiosity during an indigenous education session, by asking insightful questions and expanding our knowledge about Indigenous culture.

We all displayed Courage on the giant swing. It was terrifying and exhilarating, but we had the support of our friends cheering us on which pushed us to step out of our comfort zones.

Everyone showed Persistence during our scenic bush walk by not giving up and pushing through to get a well-deserved reward, which was the beautiful view at the top.

We had to be Collaborative with our friends during our canoeing session. Working together with our partners allowed us to steer our canoe and not capsize. Fortunately, no one tipped over.

Year 6 showed that they could be Flexible, leaving the comforts of our homes and experiencing the great outdoors.

At the end of our Primary School camp journey, we were given time to sit and Reflect with our peers and camp leaders on our new experiences and friendships”.

We congratulate Year 6 on demonstrating all of these learning dispositions and more over the course of the Camp.

U.K. Drama Tour 2025

We’re heading to the UK in June/July 2025 for an exciting immersion of theatre and workshops in Stratford and London. The trip is open to all girls who will be in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2025. They do not have to be students of the academic drama courses but should have a genuine interest in the performing arts.

An information session will be conducted via a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, June 5 at 6.30pm. Interested families should register their interest with Mr Eyers to obtain a zoom link and itinerary guide.

Nell Gwynn – Senior School Production

Bookings are now open for our next production – Jessica Swale’s Nell Gwynn.

Book your tickets here.

The senior ensemble will be presenting Nell Gwynn from Wednesday June 12 to Friday June 14 at 7.00pm, and Saturday June 15 at 1.00pm.

Venue is The St Peter’s Playhouse. Nell Gwynn was first performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, London in 2015.

The time is the 1600s. Charles II has ascended to the throne. Prior to his reign, women were banned from appearing on stage. “The theatre was the domain of ACT-ors not ACT– oresses!“

That was until the likes of Moll Davies, Peg Hughes and the eponymous Nell Gwynn arrived on stages;

It’s a rollicking tale performed by students from years 10-12. And it looks sumptuous as befitting the period. Don’t be put off by the historical content … it’s a comedy with a fierce feminist narrative.

The cast features Lucie McCutcheon (Year 10), Verona Floro (Year 10), Aurelia Cortese (Year 11), Camille McCarthy (Year 11), Sage Galafassi (Year 10), Madeleine Wilson (Year 10), Mia Jonson (Year 11), Magellan Kelly (Scots), Julia Piazza (Year 11), Emma Siegloff (Year 11), Marine Smith (Year 12), Mia Webster (Year 11), Lara Gavan (Year 11), Talia Barrack (Year 10), Frances O’Donnell (Year 10), Aasha Maunsell (Year 11), Cyndell McDonald Georgetown (Year 10), Scarlett Falzon (Year 10).

Football

After a wet, slow start to the football season, our SCEGGS Footballs Teams have clicked into gear and are off to a flying start.

SCEGGS 1 are sitting at the top of the table following a 6-1 win against Pymble 2s at the weekend. A special thank you goes to Year 10 Bella Buckley and Ava Ertle, who travelled to Pymble after their own match and played for both SCEGGS 1 & 2 teams on the weekend.

SCEGGS 2 are currently in 3rd place overall after defeating St Vincent’s College 4–0 on the weekend. A shout out to Claire Gyton (Year 9), Lulu Weston (Year 8), Allegra Jonson (Year 9) and Molly Andrews (Year 9) who all played for the 2’s on the weekend and then played their own junior 1st match. Sage Galafassi (Year 10) played an excellent match in defence.

SCEGGS 3 have bounced back with a 3-0 win over Kambala after a close match against Kincoppal the week before that resulted in a 2-2 draw. Verona Floro (Year 10) was very strong in defence.

SCEGGS 4 defeated Kambala 4 with a 7-1. Playing in her first season of football, Freya McKinley-Rowe (Year 12) scored her first goals for SCEGGS. Shout out to Scarlett Sewell (Year 12) who scored a hat trick.

SCEGGS 5 have discovered their winning play after their 5 -0 win against MLC on the weekend and currently sit in 5th place overall. After playing for the Senior 2’s, Molly Andrews (Year 9) backed up with 5 goals! There was great team play that led to many of the goals scored.

SCEGGS 6 are currently in 3rd place overall after their 6-0 win over St Vincent’s College on Saturday. Josie Hatherall (Year 8) scored 4 fabulous goals while Lucinda Morgan (Year 8) and Ella Moufarrige (Year 9) also scored a goal each.

SCEGGS 7 have had a tough season so far and have had some narrow loses. Up against a strong Kambala side, the girls never gave up and fought back well in the second half and were rewarded with a goal.

SCEGGS 8 are sitting in 2nd place after a 5-1 win against Stella Maris. The team were focused on their passing skills and possessing the ball as opposed to the scoreline. They have been building their teamwork steadily throughout the season.

SCEGGS 9 had a tough game against Meriden and were defeated 6-0 after a close win against Kambala the week before. They are now 1 win and 1 loss to start the season.

Hockey

Congratulations to Maddi Soulos (Year 7) on being selected to represent Sydney East Hockey Association (SEHA) at the U14 Girls State Championships held in Wagga Wagga this past weekend. The competition was tight with 1 win, 2 draws and 2 close losses. It was a fun weekend with the girls learning a lot and developing their skills. We look forward to hearing how the team goes in Canberra on the June long weekend.

Round 4 of the IPSHA Netball competition took place on Saturday 25 May at Moore Park and Ravenswood. The SCEGGS teams were in fine form, coming away with six wins and two losses. The 6A team battled it out against Ascham in what was a fast-paced game, taking the win 8-7. The 6B team had one of their best performances of the season, winning convincingly against Kambala. The 5A team narrowly lost against PLC Sydney, and the 5B team were too strong for Meriden, coming away with an 8-0 win. The Year 4 teams came away with two wins, and special mention to the 4B team, who won 5-3 against Kambala, despite playing with no reserves.

Each week there is a training focus for the Netball teams, and this week timing and spatial awareness were the focus at training. It is great to see the improvements the girls are making each week.

Meet some of the IPSHA Netball coaches. We have some new faces:

IPSHA Minkey/Hockey took place across various venues in Sydney, and all teams performed well, despite being low on numbers. Special mention to Luca Tuigamala (Year 4) who filled in for the combined Year 4/5 team, helping the team come away with a 5-1 win against Loreto. The team continues their excellent form with three straight wins.

Student Achievements:

Shoutout this week goes to Emily Snow (Year 5). From May 20 – 21 May, Emily competed in a two-day carnival in Albury, representing the Metro East AFL team for the Under 12s All Schools. She came up against girls much taller than her, however that didn’t deter her from playing with a lot of courage and ‘shining her light’. Emily not only did an amazing job on the field but made some strong friendships with her teammates, and described the experience as one of the best she has been a part of. What an amazing experience and achievement. Congratulations Emily!

Debating

Debating

Congratulations to the Primary B, Primary A, Year 8 and Year 10 ISDA teams for winning their Quarter Final debates last Friday! This is such a fantastic achievement for each team, and reflects their skill, teamwork, and dedication to the ISDA season. The ISDA Debating Competition consists of 32 schools, so that means each team is in the top four of 32. SCEGGS has the equal highest number of teams through to this stage of the competition – there will be only one other school that is represented in four divisions this Friday.

The SCEGGS ISDA teams will be debating at Ascham, so it would be lovely to have a whole contingent of debaters to support each other. The bus for these debates will leave SCEGGS at 4pm. Please note that for Year 8 and Year 10 the timings of their debates are slightly adjusted: prep for Year 8 will begin at 5.00pm, and the debate will be at 5.45pm, while prep for Year 10 will begin at 6.30pm, and the debate will be at 7.15pm.

Our Archdale teams are also off to a fantastic start this season: this week we won the 7B, 8A, Year 9, Year 10, and Senior (Year 11) debates against Danebank, meaning that the 7Bs, 8As, Year 10s, and Seniors have won 2/2 debates.

Our Round 3 debates will be hosted by Loreto Kirribilli. The bus will leave straight after school. At the end of the senior debates (7.45pm) the bus will return to SCEGGS.

Best of luck to all teams for their upcoming debates!

Debating Coordinator
