Science and Innovation Tour – Japan 2027

Do you want to visit Japan’s leading space research facility, one of the world’s largest aquariums or marvel at the latest robotic innovations?

We are excited to offer Secondary School students the opportunity to participate in the 2027 Science and Innovation Tour to Japan.

When: April 2027 holidays (11 days)

Who: Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2027 (Tour places are strictly limited).

Tour itinerary: Click here.

Student information session: Monday 4 May, Room JF15. This session will outline the initial expression of interest and application processes. Parent briefings will be held later.

This is an immersive experience to focus on many branches of science and technology, through real-world exploration, cultural engagement, and cutting-edge innovation. This tour will take students through some of Japan’s most dynamic cities, including Tokyo, Tsukuba, Osaka and Hiroshima, offering a unique blend of tradition and technological advancement.

Throughout the tour, students will engage with Japan’s globally recognised leadership in robotics, engineering and sustainability. Highlights include visits to interactive science museums, innovation centres and technology precincts, where students will gain insight into emerging fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and urban design. Experiences such as travelling on the iconic Shinkansen (bullet train), exploring advanced transport systems, and observing real-world applications of physics and engineering concepts will deepen classroom learning in a meaningful way.

Students will participate in a variety of tours and have some cultural experiences along the way, fostering a broader global perspective. By connecting scientific understanding with cultural context, students will develop a richer appreciation of how innovation is shaped by society.

Tour highlights include:

  • TeamLab digital art museum, an immersive interactive exhibition combining art, technology and design.
  • National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) to explore robotics, AI and future technologies.
  • Kawasaki Robostage to see industrial robotics in action.
  • Science Square Tsukuba, an interactive science facility showcasing Japanese innovation.
  • JAXA Tsukuba Space Centre, Japan’s leading space research facility, to learn about satellites, astronaut training and space exploration.
  • Tsukuba Expo Centre and Planetarium, which offers an awe-inspiring journey through the cosmos with its state-of-the-art projection technology and educational exhibits.
  • Cyberdyne Robotics Studio, exploring innovative technologies and the future of automation firsthand.
  • Ueno National Museum of Nature and Science to explore fascinating exhibits on Japan’s natural history, technology and space exploration.
  • Explore Tokyo’s culture and history with visits to Meiji Shrine and the vibrant district of Harajuku and Sky Circus Sunshine 60 Observatory, an observation deck featuring immersive digital installations.
  • Maglev Exhibition Centre to learn about Japan’s high-speed magnetic levitation train technology.
  • Narusawa Ice Cave and Fugaku Wind Cave formed by volcanic activity.
  • Guided tour of the Maishima Incineration Plant, an architecturally striking waste to energy facility designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser that demonstrates innovative environmental engineering and sustainable waste management.
  • Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the largest aquariums in the world.
  • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Peace Memorial Museum and Survivor’s Testimony or Legacy Testimony sharing personal experiences of the atomic bombing.
  • Miyajima Island
  • Universal Studios Japan, experiencing world-class themed attractions and rides including Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The tour is open for any students who are currently in Years 9, 10 and 11. Whilst students do not need to be studying a senior science, this program is ideally suited to students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, who are eager to extend their learning beyond the classroom. This tour provides valuable opportunities to build independence, collaboration skills and confidence in an international setting.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Department love to see SCEGGS students enter external art competitions, exhibitions and prizes.

While partaking in these opportunities takes a certain amount of planning, determination and bravery, we have witnessed students excel in these opportunities, gaining valuable experience by presenting their work to a wider audience along with receiving recognition for their efforts and skill.

Some examples from the recent past include:

  • Aurelia Cortese (2025) who was Highly Commended in the Waverley Woollahra 9 x 5 Landscape Prize in 2024
  • Imogen Zimmerle (2025) was selected for the Young Archies exhibition in 2023 at the Art Gallery of NSW with her hand drawn portrait of former Head of School Ms Jenny Allum
  • Jade Brennan (2024) a  finalist in the 2024 Australian Life Photography Competition
  • Bianca Rozsa (2024) was awarded 1st prize for her short film Suspended Arc in the Waverley Woollahra Short Film Prize

There are a few current opportunities that we encourage SCEGGS students to enter:

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 students had a wonderful three days at Tallong, where they took on a range of outdoor challenges and enjoyed plenty of time together as a group. Set on Gundungurra Country in the Southern Highlands, the camp gave students the chance to build confidence, independence and teamwork in a supportive and memorable setting.

Throughout the camp, students rotated through activities including high ropes, giants ladder, abseiling, mountain biking, bushwalks and nature play. There were plenty of moments that asked them to step outside their comfort zone, encourage one another and try something new.

Life at camp also brought its own routines and responsibilities, with students settling into bunkroom accommodation, sharing meals and helping out with the day-to-day running of camp.

The final evening was spent together around the campfire, looking up at the stars. A beautiful way to end the girls’ experience and to share a quiet, mindful moment together.

The Year 5 students are commended for the resilience, courage, problem-solving and kindness towards one another and their teachers that they showed throughout the camp. They represented the school with pride, embraced each challenge with enthusiasm and supported one another in all that they did. We look forward to seeing how these rich experiences continue to shape their confidence, independence and sense of community in the weeks ahead.

My heartfelt thanks to Mrs Gloor, Mr Hammond, Mrs Sweeney and Mrs Dempsey for joining us on Year 5 camp and for the thoughtful care they gave the students throughout the experience.

Primary Sport News

Primary Sport News

All Term 2 Saturday sport competitions begin this week. This term, we have two IPSHA Minkey/Hockey teams, six IPSHA Netball teams, and three Year 3 Touch Football teams entered into the respective competitions. Good luck to all teams for their first round of games, and a reminder that all players are expected to follow the SCEGGS Sports Values when representing the School at sport.

A few reminders for Saturday sport:

  • Check Clipboard for all game and training times and locations.
  • All players are expected to be at the venue at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • In the case of any changes (such as wet weather), parents will be notified via Clipboard.
  • Please provide teams space during games and team talks i.e. not standing in or close to the substitute area, being off the field/court during team talks and games etc.
  • For any absences from Tuesday training sessions, please contact the relevant sports coordinator.
  • For any absences from Saturday games, approved leave is needed from Mrs Demspsey at least one week prior to the game.

Also, a quick reminder for all parents and supporters of the following, taken from the IPSHA guidelines:

  • Focus on the efforts and performance of the children rather than the result.
  • Children play organised sports for fun. They are not playing for spectators’ entertainment, nor are they miniature professionals.
  • Applaud good performances and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game’s outcome.
  • Respect the officials’ decision.
  • Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition.
  • Positive comments are motivational and encourage continued effort.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them there would be no game.
  • Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, or harassing players, coaches or officials.
  • Comments should not interfere with the running of the game.

Year 1 AFL Team

A few Year 1 students have been heavily involved in AFL and play in a club team for the Moore Park Tigers. The girls kicked off their season last Saturday with a strong game against Maroubra Saints. The team had a positive start to the season, played well, and even scored a few goals. Another highlight for them was singing the team song at the end. Well done to the team and great to see them enjoying their AFL.

Important Sports Dates:

  • Saturday 2 May: Year 3 Touch Football, IPSHA Minkey/Hockey and IPSHA Netball competitions commence (check Clipboard for times and locations).
  • Thursday 18 June: Primary Athletics Carnival (K-6).

Have a wonderful week and all the best to all our Saturday sport teams for their first round!
