Debating

Debating

A Remarkable Week for SCEGGS Debating

Last week marked the conclusion of the ISDA and Eastside Debating Competitions for 2026 and what a finish it was. With all students now completing their Friday‑night seasons, and Archdale continuing Tuesday evenings, our debaters have shown extraordinary commitment, courage, and community spirit.

ISDA – Semi Finals

A huge congratulations to the Primary A ISDA team, who qualified for the Semi Finals and debated with maturity and confidence against MLC Sydney at Scots College. Although they did not progress to the Grand Final, their achievement reflects a season of growth, teamwork, and impressive skill development. The topic was “That we should introduce a maximum number of hours of employment that individuals under 18 are allowed to work for” and SCEGGS was debating the negative side.

We look forward to watching these young debaters continue to flourish as they move into senior years.

Eastside – Grand Finals

SCEGGS celebrated an extraordinary sweep in the Eastside Grand Finals, with Year 9, Year 10 and Year 12 all winning their debates.

The topic area was Current Affairs and the topics were:

  1. Year 9 – That the government should lower the property tax for creative industries (affirmative)
  2. Year 10 – That the USA should ban the sale of AI chips to China (negative)
  3. Year 12 – That the USA should ban the sale of AI chips to China (negative)

A particularly heartfelt congratulations goes to the Year 12 team, who have navigated significant adversity this term. Their Grand Final performance was a powerful display of resilience, grace, and exceptional skills. The standing ovation they received from the other teams was a moving reminder of the strong, supportive debating community that thrives at SCEGGS.

Archdale Competition – Rounds 3 & 4

Round 3 – Hosted at Loreto Normanhurst

Winning teams: Year 7A, Year 8A, Year 9, Year 10, Seniors

Topic area: Sports and Popular Culture

Round 4 – Hosted at SCEGGS

Winning teams: Year 8A, Year 8B, Year 9, Year 10 and Seniors

Topic area: Law and Justice

Our Archdale teams continue to demonstrate consistency, confidence, and strong collaboration as the competition progresses.

Looking Ahead

There is plenty more to anticipate as the term unfolds:

  • InterHouse Debating (Junior School): Early Term 3
  • InterHouse Debating (Senior School): Wednesday 3 June and Wednesday 10 June. Teams will be finalised by the end of this week — all students are encouraged to join, whether experienced or new.

Archdale teams travelling to away debates will continue to depart by bus at 3.10pm. Students should notify their teachers at the start of the lesson and may leave five minutes early. They are expected to catch up on any missed work.

The next round will take us to Pymble Ladies’ College.

Thank You

With all students now concluding their ISDA and Eastside seasons, we extend our sincere thanks to all debaters, chairpersons, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to such a successful and uplifting term of debating.

We look forward to Round 5 of Archdale next week and wish all teams the very best.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Gold Presentation

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Gold Presentation

Government House provided a magnificent setting as Old Girls Alexandra Argy, Gabrielle Cheung and Zoe Lindner, alongside current Year 12 students Georgia Cate Baker Wood, Florence Furness, Jemima Lowe and Isabelle Rath-Mazzochi, were recognised by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales, for achieving their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

The Gold Award represents far more than a certificate of achievement. It reflects months — and often years — of dedication across voluntary service, physical recreation, skill development and adventurous journeys. Throughout their journey, many of these students balanced demanding HSC commitments, overcame personal challenges and pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones in the Australian outdoors.

As these Gold Award recipients move on to university and future careers, they carry with them a globally recognised qualification that reflects their resilience, leadership and commitment. The presentation at Government House was a fitting celebration of their achievements and a reminder that the skills and confidence developed through the Award will continue to shape their futures.

Volunteering – NSW SES Partnership

This month, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) announced a new partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh. Participants are now encouraged to complete one or more sections of the Award through their local NSW SES unit, including the Voluntary Service component.

The partnership offers students valuable opportunities to develop practical life skills, embrace new challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities while working alongside the SES.

Duke of Edinburgh Service Award at SCEGGS

Students across all Award levels have been knitting and crocheting under the guidance of Ms Chadwick to create items for Mr Lee-Lindsay’s initiative supporting people experiencing homelessness. With the arrival of colder weather, these handmade contributions will no doubt be warmly appreciated by those in need.

Adventurous Journey Training Session

A training session will be held at lunchtime on 18 June for Bronze and Silver Qualifying Journey groups preparing to hike early next term.

I would also like to wish the Silver group heading out this weekend an enjoyable, and hopefully dry, outdoor experience following a busy examination period indoors.

Natalia Deasy Student Piano Concert

The following students recently performed in a piano concert at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music:

  • Layne Higgins (Year 2)
  • Marley Nagendra-Fiebig (Year 3)
  • Gia Bhojwani (Year 3)
  • Ariana Perkovich (Year 3)

Primary String Studio Concerts

Sixty-five talented string players from Year 1 to Year 6 performed in three String Studio Concerts this week in the Primary Music Room. The performances were very warmly received by large audiences of parents, siblings, relatives and friends. Performances of this nature, in a safe and supportive environment, are vital for a musician’s development.  Congratulations to all the performers, to the music tutors who prepared them so well and to Ms Catherine McKay, Ms Stephanie Holmes and Ms Heidi Jones who accompanied the more advanced musicians in each concert.

QVB Classical Pop-up

Building on the vision to bring music into public spaces, the Queen Victoria Building and the not-for-profit organisation Concerts for All organise performance opportunities called QVB Classical Pop-Up on the fourth Saturday of every month showcasing classical music on various instruments, including the new QVB grand piano.
