Our Community Easter Events

Everyone in the SCEGGS community is invited to this year’s Easter Festival. This evening service is always a wonderful event which focuses on the meaning and significance of Easter, with readings, prayer and music, provided by a variety of the SCEGGS musical ensembles.

The details are:

  • Date: Wednesday 1 April
  • Time: 7pm
  • Venue: Great Hall
  • Parking: Limited parking will be available in the Joan Freeman Carpark (entry from St Peters Street). This carpark will close immediately following the service.

We look forward to welcoming many parents and community members to our Easter Festival at this very special time of the year.

On Thursday 2 April, staff and students from K-12 will be involved in our Easter Service.

At both services, a cash only collection will be taken to support Arunachala Village School in India.

A loving and supportive learning community where orphaned and other disadvantaged children grow with creativity, empathy, and respect. Founded in 1999, the school empowers rural children through innovative education, fostering knowledge, gratitude, and responsibility for a sustainable future. All students have been asked to bring a monetary donation over the last few weeks to go towards their primary or form class’s Lenten offertory in support of this cause.

Toiletry Drive

Thanks to all of the people that have donated to our toiletry drive so far. I have delivered two loads of toiletries this term and will do the final load after Easter. I will be collecting items until the last day of Term 1 so feel free to drop them to me at the gate in the morning, into my office or the general office.

Community Service (for adults!!)

Several parents have asked me about volunteering for different organisations or what they might be able to do to “give back”. I am always happy to make suggestions and discuss the opportunities that I am aware of. Because of the growing demand for welfare in our city there is a greater need for people to help out. If you are ever interested in volunteering or wondering how you might be able to be involved, I would be more than happy to have a chat. You can email me or call me here at school.

The dates for our Monday Food Deliveries Term 2 are now live and ready to go in the SignUp App. If you would like to continue providing, have been thinking about getting involved or have had no idea what this is, please have a look and let me know if you have any questions. More contributors are always welcome!!

The SRC

From the Primary School SRC

From the Primary School SRC

Our 2026 Student Representatives have had a wonderful start to the year, with our Primary team embracing their roles and showing a genuine commitment to representing their peers, promoting student voice, and making positive changes in the school over time.

It has been wonderful to see the curiosity and collaboration across the group, particularly during our meeting with members of the Secondary School SRC. The girls asked thoughtful questions about processes and protocols in the Secondary School, shared ideas, and made meaningful connections as they began planning ways to work together and support whole-school initiatives.

We are very proud to have launched our first initiative for the year, to celebrate Harmony Week. In our meetings, we explored the importance of inclusivity, diversity, and kindness, and how these values can continue to be part of our everyday school life in alignment with our SCEGGS values. From this, the girls created Harmony Jars for each classroom. Each jar invited students to recognise acts of kindness and inclusion, celebrate differences, and acknowledge one another in meaningful ways. It has been lovely to see how positively this has been received and actioned by the Primary School girls.

We look forward to continuing to develop our leadership, representing our peers and making meaningful contributions to the Primary School.

The girls trained hard for months in the lead-up, and the week was defined by energy, team spirit, and blue and white with “SCEGGS is RED HOT!” heard throughout.

This year, SCEGGS climbed three places to 14th overall in the rankings – an excellent result and a testament to the team’s hard work and the support from Mrs Moar and Miss Barr, along with coaches Justin, Vince and Francois, and Old Girls Octavia and Isabella.

At the NSW Open Athletics Championships on the weekend Matilda Emanuel (Year 12) placed third in the Open 800m. This was Matilda’s first State Open Medal with a personal best time of 2:07.76.

It is terrific seeing Lily and Matilda who are in Year 12 achieving on the track as well as in the classroom. Both students have demonstrated the importance of maintaining fitness and balance whilst juggling academic studies.

All girls have qualified for the Australian Championships to be held in Brisbane in the April holidays.

IGSA Hockey

Congratulations to Jess Weatherall in Year 12 who was selected in the IGSA Open Hockey Team to compete at the NSWCIS Hockey Championships in April. Aurelia Ruberto (Year 11) was also shortlisted

Giselle Wharton (Year 8) and Maddie Soulos (Year 9) attended the U15 trials also.

Surf Lifesaving

Congratulations to Emily Snow and Clementine Finlayson who both competed at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships that were held on the Gold Coast last weekend.

  • Emily finished 4th in the flags and won the Gold Medal in the mixed beach relay team.
  • Clementine won a Silver Medal in the 2 x 1km sand race and 5th in the 2km sand race.

Well done also to Stasia Serafin (Year 7) who competed at the 2026 Surf Life Saving NSW Age Championships (Nippers), where she achieved silver in the U12 Beach Sprints. She also stepped up an age group to anchor the U13 girls relay team, helping secure a bronze medal for her club.

In the Spotlight

Elspeth Herbert (Year 11) and Scarlett White (Year 11)

The Primary School were fortunate to have Cross Country Captain Elspeth Herbert, along with keen participant Scarlett White, join in the excitement of their Carnival on Tuesday 10 March. Both students generously stayed after their Senior event to assist, running multiple circuits of the Queens Park course alongside the Primary girls.

Their presence was greatly appreciated, with many students enjoying the opportunity to run with and be supported by senior role models. Elspeth and Scarlett also attended the Primary Assembly in Week 8 to present trophies and ribbons to the winning competitors.

Thank you to both students for giving their time so willingly – another wonderful example of students giving back to the sporting community at SCEGGS.

Sophie Davis (Class 2023)

Old Girl and current coach Sophie Davis attended the Australian Emus Touch Football Training Camp in Brisbane from Friday 20 – Sunday 22 March.

We are incredibly proud of Sophie’s selection in the national squad following her outstanding performance at the National Touch League Championships earlier this month in Coffs Harbour. Sophie was a part of the championship-winning Southern Rebels team that took home their maiden title in the women’s opens division. Sophie was also a key member of the Eastern Suburbs women’s team that won the Premier League division of the Vawdon Cup in November; the club’s first in over a decade.

Sophie is a highly respected coach within the SCEGGS Touch community, consistently demonstrating leadership, expertise and commitment. Her impact is evident in the success of the teams she coaches, most recently guiding three teams to grand finals in the Easts Term 1 school competition with two victorious.

 Congratulations Sophie.

Term 1 Saturday Sport Wraps Up

Year 3 Basketball

The Year 3 SCEGGS Basketball competition in Term 1 has been a fantastic introduction to the sport for many of our girls. With three teams – SCEGGS Yellow, SCEGGS Blue and SCEGGS White – it has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm, commitment and teamwork each week. A highlight of the season has been the way all three teams have trained cohesively as a group, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all girls. This has provided a valuable opportunity for the girls to settle into Year 3 and build strong connections between new and existing students.

Across the season, all players demonstrated impressive improvement in their basketball skills, particularly with more consistent shooting, ball control and the development of some very strong defensive strategies. It has been especially pleasing to see the girls grow in confidence and game awareness as the Term progressed.

Most rewarding has been witnessing so many girls develop a genuine love for basketball and a desire to continue playing in whatever capacity they can. The coaching staff have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a positive and engaged group of students, who have represented the school with great spirit each weekend. We look forward to welcoming them back to basketball as they continue through their primary years.

Thank you to Mrs Carter and the Basketball coaches for their efforts in supporting the teams.

IPSHA Water Polo

The IPSHA Water Polo team was comprised of students in Years 5 and 6. All players were highly committed and greatly improved their skills throughout the Term. They worked on being strong in the water with ‘eggbeater’ kick, improved their ball skills, and developed their understanding of the game, especially when defending. The team was highly competitive and came away with two wins, two losses, and one draw. In Round 6, the team played the full game without any reserves, showing grit and determination and modelling the SCEGSG Sports Values. Many of the girls have also expressed an interest in continuing their involvement in Water Polo at club level. Congratulations to the team on a successful term!

Thank you to Sophie and Claudia for their efforts in coaching and supporting the Water Polo team this term.

Primary Football Competition

It was a great ending to the Primary Football competition on Saturday.

Both Year 6 teams finished the season with strong performances. SCEGGS 1 wrapped up what has been a very successful term with a confident 3–0 victory over Kincoppal. SCEGGS 2 was finally rewarded for weeks of competitive performances, securing a well-deserved 2–0 win against Wenona. It was wonderful to see their hard work in training and on previous game days pay off. Although it is not all about winning it was great to see them finish the Term on such a positive note.

The Year 5 teams have also shown impressive development as the term has progressed. Their recent matches highlight just how far they have come with several close and competitive games. SCEGGS 5 ended the season with an impressive 4–1 victory over Newington, a win that had been building over the past few weeks.

The Year 4 teams have also been a delight to watch. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and willingness to learn have shone through each week. All three teams have grown in confidence, developed their understanding of the game and consistently supported one another on the field. Their positive attitude and steady improvement have been a real highlight of the season.

Thank you to Mr Bradley and the team of Football coaches for their efforts in supporting all the Football teams.

Student Achievements

Charlotte Willis (Year 6) participated in the NSW Little Athletics State Championships last weekend in Long Jump, representing the Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club. She enjoyed the experience and competed with enthusiasm and spirit. Well done Charlotte!

Edith Herceg (Year 4) was awarded Age Champion for 2025/26 Under 10 girls at Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club. This was based on Edith’s overall results in track and field over the season.

She was also awarded gold in flags and silver in sprints at North Bondi SLC Nippers Age Championships for the 2026/26 season.

Edith has been working very hard in sport over summer, representing SCEGGS values. Congratulations Edith!

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

At the end of 2025, Year 10 art students collaborated together to create a social and politically inspired artwork exploring the strength of women. Their work reflects both the strength of collective effort and the diversity of individual perspectives and approach. Now permanently installed within SCEGGS in Nelson House, the artwork stands as a lasting reminder of our students shared creative experience and their thoughtful engagement with this theme.

Ms Dawson writes:

This large-scale collaborative work, created by the 2025 Year 10 Visual Arts classes, reimagines the Sydney Harbour Bridge through a series of individually painted panels inspired by the expressive colour and modernist style of Grace Cossington Smith. Students appropriated the iconic work “The bridge in curve” (1930) and were tasked with painting a small individual part of this work. Using Cossington Smith’s luminous palette and dynamic brushwork, the work is overlaid with fragments of poetic text woven across the panels, creating a collective narrative that is both personal and political. The text responds to the motif of the bridge and explores its potential as a connecting factor. The bridge can be seen as both signifying a sturdy physical structure and as a symbol of connection. Each student has contributed their unique visual voice and come together in a vibrant and unified composition that celebrates the power of women’s voices and community. Through their collaborative process, the bridge can be seen as a symbolic platform, connecting diverse perspectives while amplifying themes of identity, empowerment, and creative expression, transforming this iconic landmark into a powerful statement about collaboration and the enduring impact of women in art and society.

In terms of scale, this work is monumental! Paddy Molloy from the Maintenance Team had to install it in Nelson House by lifting it up one story and in via the French doors!

In other news, Ms Lilli Stromland, Old Girl (Class of 2012) tutor in the co-curricular Painting and Drawing classes and Art Assistant is about to open her latest solo show with Michael Reid Gallery Southern Highlands at Berrima.

Lilli’s show opens on 26 March and runs until 26 April.

Lilli continues to go from strength to strength after winning the Ravenswood Women’s Art prize in 2025 (Emerging Artist category). Her latest series explores the poetics of domestic space through a confident and highly resolved painterly practice. Her works draw on everyday interiors and objects, invigorating them through a vibrant and assured use of colour. Surfaces are energised by expressive mark-making and a considered approach to composition, transforming the familiar into something both dynamic and reflective. Lilli’s practice reveals a sensitivity to the rhythms of daily life, while asserting a distinctive visual language that is at once bold, intimate and quietly compelling. Further information can be found via the gallery website.

This week’s banner is a landscape by Year 10 student Lottie Coulthard, recently submitted for her Semester 1 research task.

Year 8 Wellbeing Day

Year 8 Wellbeing Day

Last Tuesday, 17 March, Year 8 had the exciting opportunity to participate in a wellbeing day. Throughout the day, our Year 8 Motto: Be You, Act with Grace, Stay Curious, shone through and defined the day’s activities.

First of all, we gathered in the Great Hall to listen to an informative presentation from Sarah on sustainable and intergenerational living in Sydney. Using this knowledge, we were then sent to create a miniature house out of the cardboard and tools we had carefully collected. Laughter and chatter filled the Hall as we worked tirelessly to complete our homes.

The curiosity of our year group was essential in brainstorming and creating our houses. Everyone had creativity and a strong desire to learn as well as experiment with the materials we were given to make something wonderful.

My Form, 8Be, had a limited amount of cardboard, tape and scissors, so we had to share and take turns using materials so that everyone could build.

After a quick recess break to refresh, it was time for the second part of the challenge. We had to make a little community with both the houses we had made earlier in the day and new facilities or public spaces. We all split off into Forms, and our Form leaders assigned tasks for everyone to complete in pairs or small groups.

The first part of our motto, Be You, was incredibly important on Tuesday. Everyone in our year has unique talents and this activity helped bring them all together to create something amazing. My Form’s community, that we named ‘Beanville’, would truly not be complete without everyone’s different skill sets.

However, cardboard can be difficult to work with, and there were more than enough times when it fell over, broke, or went flimsy. When things got hard, we remembered how to act with grace and use problem solving skills instead of getting angry or upset.

It was incredible to see our community coming together and the work we had put in really paid off for the end result.

One delicious pizza lunch later, we were back in the Great Hall where we completed a feedback and reflection sheet on the day. The Form leaders presented a short speech on our villages and how we used the motto when building them.

Unfortunately, our communities couldn’t stay in the Hall, and the bins were stacked full of cardboard roads and buildings. Although Beanville is gone, the day gave me and everyone else a valuable opportunity and a great memory!
