Drama News

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Appleton for the Appleton Ladies Potato Race!

This Drama production, a first for our Blackbox Theatre, was met with effusive praise from audiences. The cast and crew delivered a production of this hilarious Aussie play with feminist bite, of which we can all be proud.

Many thanks to all who were involved including Chris Gleisner for her beautiful photography in capturing these magical moments. The cast and crew have created some lasting friendships and memories throughout the journey of this production, a wonderful by-product of the process. We had plenty of laughs along the way in rehearsal, back of house and on the stage as the immediacy and complexity of live theatre brought its inevitable unique energy each evening.

Thank you to Melanie Tait for this wonderful play.

A new space on the Primary Playground

A new space on the Primary Playground

The Primary School playground is a joyful, busy place, with lots of activities and games that the girls enjoy during recess and lunch each day. It’s fast paced, with games of handball, survivor tag and skipping everywhere you look! However, over the last while, we have increasingly identified a need for a quieter, calmer space, where girls might be able to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the main playground, to enjoy some more mindful, slower paced activities.

This term, we have launched the new “Calm Zone” in the Primary School, which has opened in the Library Courtyard. It is open in the second half of lunch each day, with the aim of providing a quieter area where individual girls, or small groups, might come together to engage with one another in a less busy place. On offer we have activities such as mindful colouring, origami, beading and Lego. A teacher is rostered to be on duty in this area to help facilitate new connections and conversations with like-minded peers across different year groups.

This new area is proving to be a huge success with the girls, who are forming new relationships, sharing ideas and perspectives and coming together in calmer, quieter environment.

This is most impressive that Sophia has so generously given her time and effort to such worthy causes. We are all proud of you Sophia!

Correct Footwear When Playing Sport

Students playing Saturday sport are advised that they need to wear appropriate sporting shoes during training and matches. Please note that fashion shoes, sneakers and streetwear do not offer the required support and protection when playing team sports such as netball, football and basketball.

Basketball

Basketball at SCEGGS is off to a flying start in Term 2.  The girls are building chemistry within their teams and it’s showing with 19 wins out of their first 27 games.  A special mention to four teams who are undefeated after three games, the Senior 1sts and 3rds and the Junior 2nd and 3rds.

It’s great to see the sportsmanship exhibited at games by the girls and a special thanks to all our coaches who put their time in to nourish the girls’ enthusiasm and skills.

A reminder to all girls that our weekly Specialist Skills session on Friday mornings at Sydney University is open to everyone.

The season rolls on and we look forward to seeing continued success from all our SCEGGS girls.

Head Coach

Hockey

SCEGGS has had a fantastic start to the IGSA Hockey season this year, with many teams achieving incredible successes. We are proud to have four Senior teams and one Junior team representing us on the Hockey field this season, and they have been putting in a tremendous amount of effort, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship at every game.

In our Senior grade, girls have been working hard at trainings on Tuesday afternoons, learning skills and showing strong teamwork. This weekend we had two wins and two losses. A shoutout must go to the Year 12 Social team who, despite many never having played Hockey before have won all their games. It is really great to see all the girls getting involved and having a go!

In a tightly contested match, our Junior team had a narrow 1-0 loss against Loreto Kirribilli. Despite this result, they put up a strong fight, displaying exceptional teamwork and true SCEGGS spirit.

One thing all the girls have learnt throughout the season is to persevere and learn from their mistakes, regardless of the results at the end of the game. Their strong resilience, willingness to embrace challenge and positive attitude is something to be commended on and is a true signifier of their effort and commitment towards the sport.

I am incredibly proud of every girl this season and can’t wait to see everyone progress and develop as both a team and individual in the future!

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 Camp

To the icy Southern Highlands travelled Year 5 on Wednesday, 17 May to take part in a challenging and exciting camp experience at Tallong Outdoor Education and Retreat Centre. The three days away provided the girls with many opportunities to step outside zones of comfort, develop leadership skills and independence, build and strengthen friendships and, of course, have plenty of fun.

From the flying fox to mountain biking, from high ropes to canoeing, the girls discovered that many of the learning dispositions we have been encouraging inside the classroom can be applied outdoors, too. We witnessed the girls collaborating with group members, displaying courage when facing their fears and demonstrating persistence when their canoes ended up in the reeds, despite their best steering efforts!

The girls were treated to a screening of the original Muppet Movie on the first night and were lucky enough to participate in a Q & A session with one of its stars, Kermit the Frog! On our final night, undeterred by the freezing temperatures, the girls braved the elements to sit by the fire and reflect on their camp experience while enjoying watching the embers dance into the night.
