From Ms Allum

From Ms Allum

Welcome to Term 3!

It was simply joyful to see our girls back yesterday, commemorating our 129th birthday in the usual SCEGGS way with a meaningful Foundation Day Assembly followed by birthday cupcakes!

I was also delighted to welcome back to SCEGGS Julie McCrossin from the Class of 1971, as our Assembly guest speaker, who regaled the girls and staff with the life lessons SCEGGS taught her. Julie spoke about the intellectual curiosity and enrichment SCEGGS nurtured within her, the passionate teachers who imbued Julie and her peers with an enduring love of particular subjects and co-curricular pursuits and encouraged the girls to try lots of different things as many of her experiences then profoundly shaped her life today. Julie also talked about the lifelong friendships made at school, which now, over 50 years later, are still active!

Pleasingly we have hit “rock bottom” with the Wilkinson House redevelopment. The sandstone excavation between Wilkinson House and the Sports Hall is now complete and the well for the lift is being prepared. As you can see from the photos below, the walls are being propped up by the steel columns, with the concrete slab on the bottom level to be poured later this term. The good news is that there will be less noise and vibration and each milestone brings us one step closer to a revitalised Wilkinson House.

On Monday, we will come together as a community again to acknowledge NAIDOC Week which occurred during the school holidays. Our Assembly and activities throughout the week provide an invaluable opportunity to learn, engage and celebrate together.

A major highlight this term (and indeed the year!) is the Festival on Forbes on Monday 25 August. Our intrepid Festival on Forbes Committee are planning a wonderful day for the whole community – I hope to see you there!

My best wishes to you all for a great term ahead!

K-12 School Attendance Reminders

K-12 School Attendance Reminders

Attendance at school is a legal requirement for every student under the age of 17 unless:

  • leave has been granted by the Head of School in advance
  • an emergency or unforeseen situation arises
  • they are sick or have a medical/dental appointment.

The cumulative effects of student absence from school can be quite significant. For example, a student who is absent for more than 7 days every semester will miss more than a full school year over their 13 years of school if the pattern continues.

Regular attendance at school is essential for your daughter to achieve her best academically. When your daughter attends school every day, learning becomes easier as does building and maintaining friendships. Parents should be aware of the importance of school attendance except in the most extreme circumstances.

If your daughter is absent due to sudden illness or an unforeseen event

Parents should notify the School before 9.30am if their daughter is absent from school. It is important that this communication includes the reason for the student’s absence.

These notifications may now be made by submitting the online form through the SCEGGS Mobile App. Please note that you must be logged into the App to be able to access this feature which is prefilled with your daughter’s personal information. Parents/carers may also call the School on 9332 1133 to notify the school of an unexpected absence with a followup either through the SCEGGS Mobile App or Absences email (absences@sceggs.nsw.edu.au).

Requesting Permission for Any Other Leave

Any absence for reasons other than sudden illness or an unexpected family situation should be requested in advance. These requests should be made directly to the Head of School.

To request leave in advance, parents should email Jenny Allum directly, giving the reasons for the leave sought and the dates of the intended absence. Such requests should be submitted well in advance. In considering these requests and assessing whether to approve or decline the request, the Head of School will consider the student’s prior record of attendance, the reason for the planned leave and the best interests of the student and her ongoing education. Please note: Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays.

Students involved in elite sporting programs who have training schedules that may impact on their arrival at school on specific mornings for a short period of time should also apply directly to the Head of School for permission.

On very rare occasions, parents may also apply for Exemption from Attendance at School for their daughter. In this situation it must be “clearly demonstrated by the applicant that an exemption is in the student’s best interests in the short and long term and that alternatives to exemption have been considered”. For example, employment in the entertainment industry for a short period of time may be one such situation.

Absences notes/emails must be provided within 7 days
  • Parents must provide a written explanation for any full day or partial absence (arriving late or leaving early). The explanation must include the reason for their daughter’s absence from school.
  • Parents can provide written explanations in one of THREE ways:
    • by completing the online absence form within the SCEGGS Mobile App
    • by providing an email to Absences from a registered parental contact email address
    • by providing a handwritten absence note and signing it
  • Parents MUST provide this written explanation within 7 calendar days of their daughter’s absence, or the absence will be recorded in a category labelled “unexplained or unjustified absence”. After 7 days, a written explanation must still be provided, but for our official records, for school reports and for records provided to Government agencies such as the Department of Education and the Department of Human Services, the absence must remain categorised as unexplained/unjustified.

We thank parents and carers in advance for their support and adherence to these important attendances procedures throughout the semester ahead.

Keeping the Fire Burning: NAIDOC Week at SCEGGS

Keeping the Fire Burning: NAIDOC Week at SCEGGS

Next week, SCEGGS will be celebrating NAIDOC Week with a rich variety of cultural offerings.  NAIDOC Week is a week of celebration for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and has also become a significant event in the Australian calendar. This year’s theme is: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.

The National NAIDOC Committee have said, “This year’s theme celebrates the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced.”

NAIDOC week is held in the first week of July but because this falls in the school holidays, next week will be the opportunity for students and teachers to come together and engage with Aboriginal culture in meaningful ways.

  • On Monday and Tuesday Brolga Dancers will lead Primary School students in lessons where they will have the chance to learn contemporary Aboriginal dance. Year 9 Drama will also participate in a special workshop relating to their recent study.
  • On Wednesday at Recess the student RAP Committee will be selling Dreamtime Tukka cookies and iced tea made from Indigenous ingredients. Cookies will be $2 with proceeds to support a local Aboriginal organisation.
  • Throughout the week the PE department are running an Indigenous Games interhouse sports contest over lunch.
  • All week the school canteen will offer morning tea with Indigenous ingredients included in them.
  • On Friday every year group will participate in a traditional smoking ceremony. Opportunity to engage in this ceremony, conducted by respected community members, is a real privilege for our staff and students.
  • Other experiences have been prepared by some classroom teachers relating to individual subjects. The Gujaga Foundation will be running a workshop with Year 10 students about the recent repatriation of the Gweagal spears.

NAIDOC Week is a time to come together, learn, and celebrate the vibrant cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We look forward to seeing everyone participate in and enjoy the activities planned!

SCEGGS Mobile App

SCEGGS Mobile App

Have you downloaded the SCEGGS Mobile App yet?

It is great to see that more than 650 people have already downloaded the SCEGGS Mobile App!

If you haven’t done so already, we would strongly encourage all parents and all secondary school students to download the SCEGGS Mobile App from the App Store or Google Play to make sure you all stay connected for the term ahead.

The SCEGGS Mobile App offers centralised and convenient access to pertinent information, allows users to receive real-time notifications from the School and allows parents to easily lodge a student absence notification if your daughter is sick.

All Clipboard notifications will now come through the SCEGGS Mobile App too, so if you have been receiving notifications from Clipboard (eg when sport is cancelled due to wet weather), you will need to download the SCEGGS Mobile App to ensure that you continue to receive these push notifications.

As we continue to enhance our communications with the SCEGGS Community, we welcome any feedback you might have about the SCEGGS mobile App. Please contact our Director of ICT  here.

If you require any technical support to ensure you are able to access the information in the SCEGGS Mobile App, please click here.

B Kinder Day in the Primary School

B Kinder Day in the Primary School

On the final Wednesday of Term 2 the Primary School celebrated B Kinder Day. This is the fifth year that SCEGGS has taken part in B Kinder Day in support of the B Kinder Foundation and what a joyous and inspirational day it was! The symbol for the day this year was a rainbow. As you can see in the photos there was certainly a lot of colour, smiles and laughter sprinkled over the Primary School on this day – A great way to put a spring in our step on a chilly winter’s day!

The overarching focus of B Kinder Day is always to connect as a community and to inspire people to be inclusive, respectful and kind. In conjunction with the theme, this year, we decided to zoom in on how being kind to ourselves can really impact the way in which we treat others. To do this, the girls explored the practices of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Activities included, playing the gratitude game to name what they’re grateful for, taking part in ‘Nature Eye Spy’ to be mindful of the beautiful natural environment around the school that is often overlooked and the writing of kindness pledges on the symbol of a rainbow. Each girl imagined ‘putting themselves in another person’s shoes’ to help them decide what acts of kindness could be truly helpful for their friends or family members.

The Year 6 girls worked with Kindy and Year 1 to support them in the writing of their gratitude cards. It was wonderful to witness the leadership, care and compassion the older girls demonstrated in their guidance of the younger students.

The day culminated in a K-6 Assembly in the Great Hall, which was adeptly led by the members of Kindness Committee. Throughout the assembly we heard how some teachers practice gratitude, empathy or mindfulness in their own life and some Year 2 and Year 6 students shared about their learning this term that aligned with the focus on kindness. A combined performance by the Chamber String & Percussion Ensemble was also a highlight!

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of the students in the Kindness Committee (Semester 1) and thank them for their help in arranging such a fabulous day!

Year 1 – Bianca Roncolato & Alice Zhang
Year 2 – Camilla Harvey & Temperance Kirchner
Year 3 – Gracie Johnson, Scarlett Scott, Estelle Sicari
Year 4 – Mila Easton & Grace McLaughlin
Year 5 – Arabella Conrad-Martin & Emily Lansdown
Year 6 – Jessica Grace & Amelia Mitchell

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Don’t judge half empty glasses

Whenever I get to this mid-point of the year, I’m reminded of the cliché question “is the glass half full or half empty?”, and the consensus thinking that we should all be positive and focus on the half full that remains – there is still time, there are opportunities remaining, the potentials are not all gone. And yet I sometimes regret that this disguises the notion that the first half was wasted, of lost value. I like to appreciate that first half – on a hot day, those initial huge gulps of a cold drink are as welcome as greeting an old friend. The empty space in a glass can be rejoiced, a reminder of how well things are going.

The year so far has been a wondrous mix of hot weather and swimming, cold nights by camp fires, huge valley panoramas followed by closed-in rainforest canopy, high humidity and sea breezes, over-cooked noodles and wagyu burgers served with chips at a café at the end of a hike. There’s been some uproarious laughter hollered, some wise new insights uttered and some words of frustration were muttered. Like fossicking, there can be a lot of dirt dug for a few gems, or treasures unearthed all day – that’s the nature of hiking (and living through the teenage years.)

So, a few reminders of what’s coming up, what to expect. Firstly, winter is definitely not over, and nights will remain cold for a few more months – don’t skip on your sleeping bag or warm clothes unless you have a weather forecast that permits. Bad weather can mean an expedition gets cancelled or re-organised at the last minute, so keep an eye on emails and texts that communicate a change in venue or times. Remain flexible and agile, accepting change with an open mind and the positivity that’s required during adventure. If you have the chance to undertake an expedition, don’t waste it, as later dates can be lost to cancellations, personal injuries or unforeseen events. Carpe Diem.

As always, we ask that borrowed equipment (tents and stoves, fuel bottles) plus any items borrowed during the hike itself, be returned to Mr Swain or Ms Bower as soon as possible, preferably within two days of getting home. We usually need that gear to be re-issued later the same week. Never wash a tent, simply empty any sand or rubbish, wipe with a wet cloth if necessary, then hang out to dry. Clean the stove – inside and out (especially any soot).

Be aware that the best approach to completing your hours (for Service, Recreation and Skill) is to make a routine and stick to it. One hour per week every week is the best approach – be very stubborn about getting that hour done. The rules of the Award dictate that lost time cannot be made up – if you miss four weeks-worth of hours, your completion date inevitably moves back four weeks. This becomes of special concern to any current Year 12’s who wish to finish in time for speech night.

Returning to the theme of achievements from earlier in the year, we offer emphatic congratulations to four of our students – Jessica Millin and Olivia Sader (Class of ’23); Molly Espie and Ava Nunley (Class of ’24) – who were presented with their Awards by the NSW Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley, in a ceremony at Accor Stadium in March. All Awards are meritorious, but the achievement of completing Gold before the end of Year 12 is both rare and an outstanding example of organisation, motivation, commitment and sacrifice.

Looking forward to another six months of adventure, big mountains and small joys.

Jo Bower (Award Leader)
Doric Swain (Expedition Supervisor)

Snowsports

SCEGGS sent 42 students to compete at the Redlands Cup, Scots Cup and Sydney Interschools Regional Championships. The weather conditions were somewhat difficult at times with Divisions 1, 2 & 3 all skiing in cyclonic winds and poor visibility on the final day.

Congratulations to all competitors who represented the school so proudly. It was wonderful to see so many SCEGGS students competing across every age group and event. For many students this was their first-time racing at Interschools and they had to overcome significant nerves at the top of each race course. Everyone made it down the course and performed very well.  A special mention to our youngest competitor in Year 1, Isla Homann, who competed in both Alpine and Skier Cross events.

A special thank you to Ms Smith and Ms Axford who also joined us in supporting the team and spent hours undertaking race official duties.

Additionally, any Year 7 students who missed the Term 1 Clinic will be caught up with the dTpa and the HPV vaccinations. If your Year 7 child is on the list to be vaccinated at the upcoming Clinic you will receive an email from the school.

Vaccinations will only be provided at school if consent has been received. Online consent is accepted through the NSW Health School Vaccination Program portal.

How to provide consent:

If your child misses the school vaccination clinic, the immunisation nurses will try to catch them up at their next visit (scheduled for early 2025). Alternately, you can speak to a GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccinations.
