Introducing our 2024/2025 School Prefects!

Introducing our 2024/2025 School Prefects!

Last Thursday we commissioned our Prefects for 2024/2025. The Commissioning occurred in the Chapel as a reminder of the Christian perspective on leadership that is given not to increase our own self-importance but to enable us to be of greater service to others. In carrying out the role of Prefect, these students are entrusted to represent all of the students at the School and embody the school values and act as role models for other students. As part of their leadership and service, the Prefects will initiate charity collections, organise whole school activities and encourage support for community events.

It is with great honour that we present the School Prefects for 2024/2025:

Head Prefect Georgia Tsangaris
Deputy Head Prefect Camille McCarthy

Giving Day 2024

Giving Day 2024

Thanks to the generous support of the SCEGGS community, we have raised over $11 million towards creating a state-of-the-art learning facility in the redeveloped Wilkinson House. This includes revitalised classrooms, a wonderful Year 12 common room, flexible Academic Support facilities, provides a culturally appropriate space to support our Indigenous students and extends our Sports Hall facilities.

Why Give?

We are very grateful to the SCEGGS families and supporters who have contributed and support the need to invest in the school for the SCEGGS girls of today and tomorrow.

We gave to the Light Her Path campaign upon becoming new parents at SCEGGS. We believe strongly in a SCEGGS education for our daughter because of its inclusivity, diversity and core focus of helping each girl reach their full potential. SCEGGS’ inner-city location, relatively small size in student numbers and non-selective enrolment policy – can’t be underestimated.

Year 6 Family

How to Give

On 7 November 2024, from 9am we are hosting our third Giving Day. Giving Day brings our whole school community together for 24 hours of giving once a year, to pay it forward for the future, while honouring the generosity of past generations.

Over 500 donors have come together to support the Light Her Path campaign since launching in 2018 and we encourage every member of our community to participate.

All Donations Will Be Matched

Members of our parent and SCEGGS community have very generously offered to match donations on the day. This means every dollar you donate will mean more donations to the school.

Give generously for you – let’s light her path.

A Reflection….Student Prefect Retreat 2024

A Reflection….Student Prefect Retreat 2024

On Thursday 17 October, the very eager Prefects and one excited Ms Connolly embarked on a day full of learning, team building, growth and many laughs along the way. We were hosted by the amazing team at Yirranma Place, a local community precinct with philanthropy at its heart. “Yirranma” is a Gadigal word broadly translated to mean “many-create”, which was very fitting for our day focusing on collaboration and team strengthening.

Our day started with a session with Ms Allum, or as she called it “Wisdom from the Head”, where we were invited into an open discussion and a Q&A in which we were inspired by her insights and leadership, and we understood what strong leadership looks like in a SCEGGS context. We took away the importance of maintaining balance between work and relaxation, as we all live busy lives with varied commitments. The challenges of leadership were also illuminated; Ms Allum’s emphasis on support for each other and  playing to everyone’s strengths to maximise our positive impact, are key messages we will take into our leadership journey. It was an excellent way to start the day, opening our eyes to some of the lessons she has learnt and experiences she has had during her time as Head. And if you were wondering, Ms Allum’s favourite colour of highlighter is neon orange.

We then participated in a bonding activity, in which every Prefect shared a sentimental item, which represented them and significant aspects of their lives. For many, this was an inspiring experience, where girls, safe within the intimate space of our group, were able to share stories and be vulnerable and open with each other. We learnt about Claudia’s Phils-Osophy, Cissy’s inability to ever be without a blank palm card, and Darcey’s favourite stuffed animal, Mr Piggins.

One key activity was Mr Lee-Lindsay’s teaching of the acronym CHANGE, where we were challenged to consider all of the different attributes that make up leaders we want to emulate. We never decided on an exact acronym, each letter having too many attributes to choose just one, but some of the key ones mentioned were; courage, community, humility, authenticity, nurturing, graciousness, empathy and everyone. This was especially helpful in establishing our intended direction in our roles as Prefects, and developing our understanding of what it means to be a leader at SCEGGS.

We had many visitors throughout the day, from staff at SCEGGS, such as Ms Whitney, Ms Kaye, Ms Wymer, Ms Bloomfield and Mr Rogers, and were also visited by two female leaders who work at Yirranma Place. We heard from Yasmin Narielvala, the head of partnerships and processes for the Paul Ramsay Foundation. Her message to do good work, and her experience in managing a very busy lifestyle, gave us great insight into some of the great initiatives we can support and the incredibly strong leaders behind them.

We were also lucky enough to meet Camilla Gray, the National Events Manager for the Paul Ramsay Foundation who shared with us her struggles and rules for managing a team, reminding us to always be solutions-focused, honour a deadline, and speak up early if we are struggling with our workload. We particularly liked her mantra of “Leave your ego at the door,” and we partnered this with Yasmin’s wisdom, that we have been chosen to “do good work”.

Before our lunch break, we were lucky enough to read through the carefully crafted scrapbooks and letters from the past Prefect bodies. Flipping through these books filled us with immense excitement. This activity made us realise how special the honour we have been given truly is, and we reflected upon the past Prefects’ love for the school, the SCEGGS ethos and their Prefect family. This reminded us of the legacy of past SCEGGS Prefects, and the importance of the tradition of student leadership to the school, reaffirming the importance of the role we now play for our school community. We chatted about the advice, reminisced on memorable moments of past prefects and their initiatives and enjoyed each other’s company in our perfect family over a VERY delicious lunch provided by Two Good Co, another inspirational company lead by dedicated  leaders with a goal of empowering, supporting and providing pathways for women at risk of homelessness.

At the end of the day, we led the prefect body as we started brainstorming for our 2025 prefect ‘vision’, as well as some other exciting events that we can’t wait to share! This moment in the day was important in establishing how our prefect body will collaborate respectfully and successfully.

Overall, the leadership training day was an incredibly rewarding experience. Our team grew so much closer and started building relationships that will benefit us in our positions and simultaneously on our Year 12 journey. We’d like to thank Ms Connolly, Mr Lee-Lindsay, Ms Allum and all of the staff who helped make the day so successful. Moreover, we want to extend a huge thank you to the team at Yirranma place; their insights and advice were much appreciated by all.

We cannot wait for the year ahead and feel immense pride to be continuing this integral aspect of the culture here at SCEGGS.

Welcome back to Term 4, which is going to be over before you know it! There is lots to pack into the rest of the year and I wish you all the sustenance and perseverance to make it to the end.

Mr Lee-Lindsay Needs Toiletries!!

I have been asked by a number of welfare agencies if we are able to provide toiletry items for those in need. These items often get left off the list of essentials as many families and individuals prioritise food when budgeting. The type of items that are needed include:

  • Pump bottles of soap
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Toothpaste
  • Tooth Brushes
  • Razors
  • Deodorant
  • Small packets of Toilet Paper and Tissues.

There will be a basket outside of the chapel where these items can be placed. I will deliver these items towards the end of week 5 (Friday 15 November). Your generosity is always appreciated.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 58: Same but Different with Amelie and Lauren Ransom.

This time of the year is when our Year 12 students are finishing up their school life and looking towards a new and different future. Two of those students, Amelie and Lauren Ransom, have gone through their whole schooling life together. In fact, they have been together their whole lives as they are twins, identical ones at that! In this conversation, we find out what its like to be a twin from their perspective and I get to ask some of those questions that you might have always wanted to ask. I hope you enjoy our discussion.

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple and other popular podcast platforms so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.

On the carnival day

Students are to come to school in PE uniform with their swimmers on underneath. At the carnival, students may wear decorated hats, coloured socks, t-shirts, and other House colour accessories. Students are not to bring pom-poms or streamers in our efforts to minimise any adverse impact on the environment. PE uniform must be worn correctly to and from school and students must arrive at school by 8.15am and attend Form. Students will travel by hired bus and leave SCEGGS at 8.30am to Lane Cove Leisure Centre. After the event, students will either return to school by bus or can be collected by a parent / carer from the venue. Written permission must be sent to your daughter’s classroom teacher if she is being collected from the pool after the carnival. Students taking the bus back to school will arrive in time for 3.10pm carline collection.

Students must stay for the entire carnival. No student will be permitted to be collected before the conclusion of the carnival.

The pool at Lane Cove Leisure Centre is an outdoor pool. While undercover seating is available, students must also take measures to stay sun-safe, including wearing t-shirts when not competing and hats when sitting in the stands. They are also expected to bring and apply sunscreen throughout the day. Students should wear their SCEGGS swim costume. They can also wear any other sun-protective swimwear for the day, such as a rash shirt. We ask that the students bring enough food and drink for the day.

Parents may sit near the students’ seating area or on the balcony overlooking the pool’s finish line. While the canteen facilities are open to parents, we ask that parents not purchase food or drinks for their children. Years 3-6 Monday swim squad will be cancelled on the morning of the carnival. All after-school sports activities will be on as usual; however, attendance is not compulsory. We do ask that you let the relevant Sports Coordinator know if your daughter is going to be absent from any after-school co-curricular activities, as per usual protocol.

IPSHA Selection

This year’s carnival will be used to select next year’s IPSHA Swimming Team. We encourage all students to get involved in all events and strive for their personal best! Any students who are absent on the day of the carnival and wish to trial for the IPSHA Swimming Team will be able to do so in early 2025. This date is yet to be confirmed.

We are all looking forward to a beautiful day. In the case of inclement weather and the need to cancel the carnival, a decision will be made by 7.30am and communicated via Clipboard and the SCEGGS App.

For any questions, please reach out. Looking forward to a wonderful day!

Science News – Winners!

Science News – Winners!

A huge congratulations go to all the students who completed the BioTech Futures Challenge. This is an excellent program where students work with practicing scientists to solve a problem. We had students tackle challenges such as how to create biodegradable bandages, how to improve epipens, how to grow plants in space and how to protect astronauts from radiation.

Students worked in a variety of teams, including collaborating with North Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Grammar School. The challenge was held over a number of weeks from July to September. Students attended zoom workshops about scientific skills such as how to consider the broader societal, ethical, and environmental implications of their work or how to create a compelling and visually engaging scientific poster that captures attention and communicates their findings effectively.

After much hard work, planning and late nights, our 5 teams submitted their ideas for judging. Across Australia, 279 students competed. From those, 19 teams were chosen as finalists.

We were extremely proud when two of our five teams were selected as Finalists. Finalists had to present their work to an audience of scientists and answer specific, unseen questions about their devices, concepts and research. While it was little bit scary, our students spoke eloquently and knowledgably.

Sara Girgis (Year 9) and Pascale Otton (Year 9), finalists, said “At the symposium, we heard a really interesting talk from an AI startup creator and we learnt about how to integrate AI into many solutions in the biotechnological field. We also watched the other group’s presentations and were very inspired by their challenges and solutions. The Biotech Futures challenge was incredibly interesting and a unique learning opportunity that taught us how to problem solve and think creatively on real world issues.”

In total, only 7 prizes were awarded, and we are extremely proud to announce that one SCEGGS team was awarded a prize of $250 for Best Poster Presentation. This is an amazing result and the students should be very proud of their creative, analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as their teamwork and oral presentation skills.

It is also lovely to note that Dakota Kedzier-Hurst, a SCEGGS Old Girl, was the scientific mentor for the team that won First Place in the Symposium Presentation.

Please join me in congratulating our BioTech Challenge Team Members, who were:

Team 1, in collaboration with Sydney Grammar students:

Rachel Li Year 9
Yang Zhou Year 9

Team 2, in collaboration with Sydney Grammar students:

Bridget Murray Year 10
Emma Conway Year 10
Keira Markwick Year 10

Team 3, in collaboration with Sydney Grammar students:

Juliette Clark Year 10
Amelie Hewitt-Taylor Year 10

The Finalists (invited to Present at the Symposium) were:

Team 4, in collaboration with North Sydney Boys students

Pascale Otton Year 9
Sara Girgis Year 9

The winners: Team 5 (a SCEGGS only team):

Isabelle Rath-Mazzochi Year 10
Natalie Assaad Year 10
Zara Perkins Year 10
Jessica Weatherall Year 10
Melody Li Year 10

Our winning team ( Zara Perkins, Jessica Weatherall, Melody Li, Isabelle Rath-Mazzochi, Natalie Assaad from Year 10) wrote:

“Through the Biotech Futures Challenge, we were given the freedom to explore any topic we wanted with our mentor and come up with an innovative solution. We all knew we wanted to explore issues to do with space, and after researching, we learnt that one of the most significant issues limiting astronauts’ abilities to stay in space for long amounts of time, for instance the 3 months it takes to travel to Mars, is space ionising radiation.

Space ionising radiation leads to detrimental side effects for astronauts – including cancer, radiation sickness, liver failure and DNA mutations. Current solutions are limited to physical shields built into spacecraft and spacesuits, which are costly, heavy, and inefficient to produce. We looked into developing an injection that would boost the body’s natural radioprotective agents and biochemically protect them against free radicals, the harmful unstable atoms that form inside the body when exposed to ionising radiation.

Upon researching, we came across 2 radioprotective agents, Amifostine and MnSODs mimetics which have shown high efficacy rates in recent clinical trials. The mimetics bond to free radicals, preventing them from interacting with water molecules in the body, and the Amifostine transports the free radicals out of the body in the urine. By combining these two, we decided to create a nanoparticle injection so that the rate of release of the drug could be altered depending on the person.

On Monday 14 October we presented our project at Sydney university in front of a panel of scientists. We each spoke about our project, the issues it would address, how it worked, and then were asked two questions by the panel. The presentation and preparation leading up to it was a valuable experience that allowed us to consider how we could effectively teach others about our project and share the knowledge gained throughout this process!”

Students Driving to Sport

As more of our students are gaining their driver’s licences, it is timely to remind everyone that no student is to drive another student to or from school, sports training sessions or matches, or any other co-curricular event or activity.

Due to safety concerns, particularly those associated with inexperienced drivers, we strongly encourage all students to use the buses provided to and from sporting venues.

Please refer to page 18 of the SCEGGS School Diary.

The Red Balloon

As we commence Term 4, we enter the final stages of rehearsals for our Years 7-9 production – The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse, adapted for the stage by Anthony Clark.

The production is based on a beautiful short film made in 1956 and follows a small child as they follow a mischievous red balloon around the streets of post war Paris.

You can access it via YouTube here.

The film was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Palme d’Or du court métrage/Golden Palm for Best Short Film.

Our director Ms Poppy Lynch has assembled a vibrant cast for the play, and they have been working enthusiastically through Term 3.

Sarah Jenkins (Year 7) Josie Grayden (Year 9) Mila Filus Rasmussen (Year 7)
Asha Meagher (Year 7) Zara Anderson (Year 7) Maya Mitchell Zancanaro (Year 7)
Tia Mavritsakis (Year 7) Victoria Bradman (Year 8) Holly Ancher (Year 7)
Perri Lawrence (Year 8) Evie Marriott (Year 8) Josephine Wheater (Year 8)
Isha Singh (Year 9) Helena Squires (Year 7) Anastasia Kamper (Year 7)
Charlotte Self (Year 9) Sarah McIntyre (Year 7) Cienna Christie (Year 7)
Matilda Naik (Year 7) Posie Nobay (Year 7)

They are keenly supported by a team of students who will perform technical and backstage roles, including Aasha Maunsell (Year 11), Julia Piazza (Year 11), Sarah Bird (Year 8), Saffron Todd (Year 7), Sage Galafassi (Year 10), Harper Jones (Year 8), Tilly Murphy (Year 10), Mimi Hildage (Year 8), Pascale Otton (Year 9) and Sophie Downes (Year 8).

Ms Eddi Goodfellow is leading the team in her role as Technical Designer. We are utilising LED screens to magically transport us to the streets of Paris.

Costume design is by Ms Anna Gardiner and our Production Assistants are Ms Eliza Newton (class of 2023) and Ms Kayla-Rose DeSousa. Mr Stephen Colyer will be managing the front-of-house team. Our poster has been designed by Ms Mercedes Schwedes.

The season runs from Wednesday November 20 through to Saturday November 23.

Bookings for The Red Balloon open on Monday October 28 via Humanitix.
